Coastal Craft 65′ Concord Yacht Review

Coastal Craft 65' Concord Yacht Review
With their large angles and flat expanses, most all-aluminium motoryachts are easy to identify. The same cannot be said for the Coastal Craft 65 Concord; it is very difficult to say whether it is made from aluminium plate or curvaceous fiberglass. The interior is made with crafted joinery, sparkling heated marble soles and state of the art electrical systems. To top it off it is propelled by a set of Volvo Penta IPS1200s with Joystick Plus and Joystick Drive.

Performance

One a calm rainy day in the Pacific Northwest, you can easily read the instrument layout and comfortably relax on the armrest and drive using the Volvo Penta joystick located on the armrest of the Stidd helm chair on the top tier, there are two touch screen Garmin GPSMAP 8215 MFDs, each having a Garmin VHF 200 handset. The panels, keypads and switches are located below; the inset-type Silva compass.

The average speed at 32.6 knots was stable and smooth. The sound was not too loud at 76 dB-A at the lower helm; the polyurethane foam used to spray the interior of the aluminium hull serves in part as a sound reducer and a barrier for vibration vapour. The boats didn’t even need the help of the Humphree Interceptors to run swiftly and steadily at 4 degrees. It started from 1,500 rpm and progresses steadily till WOT. Three joysticks were used on board; two in the cockpit, one on the flying bridge.

Construction

This boat is built using water-jet-cut aluminium plate attached with MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding technology. The transom used on the chines and at the ship’s bottom has thicker plates; the stringers used are made from aluminium, as well as the frames and transversals. Dissimilar metals are isolated to avoid corrosion. The exterior then passes through a long finishing process, after which, it is finished using Awlgrip paint products.

<Accommodations

The 65 is spacious and simple in terms of its layout. The main deck houses a big saloon, the lounge area at the back, a dinette, a galley and helm station. On the bottom deck is the full-beam master, which comprises a king berth, a large en suite head, and Manship hatch; the VIP forward, at the bottom deck, features a queen berth, en suite head and Manship hatch.

There is a guest stateroom to starboard located in their middle, featuring twin rooms and an en suite head. There is also a utility room to port housing a Miele washer and dryer and a Viking trash compactor. This simplicity masks the amazing multiplexed electrical system which uses eight high-powered Genasun lithium batteries, three Victron Energy Skylla battery chargers, a Charles Industries Isoboot transformer and E-plex monitoring.

With this powerful electrical system, the boat can use a shore power of its choice whenever it wants. Another advantage is that the owner can consistently work all his appliances, put on lights and media, and AC in all rooms without having to use a generator.
