Whilst her styling and wooden construction is traditional, Tasman is uncompromisingly modern and practical. Built to survey standard, the full displacement hull and stabilizers have proven to offer comfortable handling even in rough conditions.
Remarks from the designer, Richard McBride: As can be seen in some of the included images, “massive keelson, transverse floors, engine bearers and bilge stringers form the basic structure of the vessel. Also there is a large solid area supporting the stabilisers. She is built like a working trawler and will take massive punishment. Also, she is massively glassed inside and out, and the hull is virtually monocoque. The point of glassing the interior is VERY important! For the kind of stresses we are discussing, as in making a hull more resistant to penetration, FRP only really works under tension. Under compression it will collapse easily enough, but under tension is incredibly strong. So when a pane is hit from the outside, the outside comes under compression while the inside, as the hull tries to deform, comes under tension, and the more glass on the INSIDE, the more resistant it will be. So you need glass on the outside to resist abrasion and to keep the water out, and glass on the inside for strength. TASMAN has both.”
