Construction

Huckins Yacht Corporation’s Quadraconic Hull has been described as seakindly, legendary, even iconic.  Let’s examine some facts about this design to better understand why Frank Pembroke Huckin’s Quadraconic Hull has flourished since 1928.

-          The name itself was derived from the partaking of four conical insertions that generate a specific form of hull and the Quadraconic design allowed for the following characteristics.

  • The Quadraconic Formulae generates a hull that is as free from pounding as any displacement hull.
  • The hull is as sea worthy as a displacement hull when cruising at below planning speeds.
  • The hull attains planning at extremely low speed.  In fact, as low as the “critical speed” of an equally sized displacement hull.
  • The hull has a sustainable sea speed of at least 50% higher than minimum planning speed.
  • The hull design obtains considerably higher sustainable speed on any given ratio of size, length and power than other seagoing hulls whose buoyancy and seaworthiness are exceptional and free from pendulum roll.

-          The United States Navy ordered 18 PT Boats from Huckins Yacht Corporation during World War II.  The Huckins PT Boats outperformed the military’s expectations and were vastly superior compared to other PT Boats in service during World War II.

-          Military testing proved the following characteristics.

  • The Huckins PT Boats, loaded with 30,000 pounds of military payload, planed at less than 10 knots while others designed had difficulty planning out at 20 knots.
  • PT Boats were required to have a 500 mile range and the Huckins designed PT Boat had a 751 mile range.
  • The Huckins designed boats did not pound, they did not get overtaken in a following sea, they were not wet boats, and their motion was free from roll at above planing speeds.

-          Mr. Huckin’s Quadraconic Hull Design turned 88 years old in 2016 and Huckins Yacht Corporation has built a total of 458 custom yachts since launching Hull # 1 in 1928.

Broker Comments

Huckins found perfect harmony between function and aesthetics. La Belle Hélène is one of a kind! This Huckins is the latest model available and she is on a short list of the finest express yachts ever built. This is a yacht that one can consider for embarking on a trip to the Caribbean, Bermuda, or fast local cruising.  Huckin’s Quadraconic Hull is proven and the benefits of the hull design have been well documented not to mention proven since 1928.  A personal inspection is the only way to appreciate the build quality and attention to fine design and detail in all areas.
