PRELIMINARY LISTING - SUBJECT TO OWNER REVIEW AND CHANGES
PENGUIN CROSSING has had only 2 owners, both knowledgeable yachtsmen, who have cared for her well. She is hull #9 of this original series of Ocean Trawlers from Jet Tern Marine. The 43 started out branded as Solo in 1998 but after the first few hulls the build process, construction materials and systems design were all upgraded by Jet Tern with the purpose of meeting ABS Quality Evaluation Inc. ISO 9001 which they were awarded in August 2001. During this process the Solo 43 was rebranded as Selene Ocean Trawlers.
As PENGUIN CROSSING was produced toward the end of this process and during the ongoing inspections for the ISO 9001 application she was produced under those standards. Further proof of the strength and seaworthiness of this series from Selene was proven when Mr. Aoki Yoh, a Japanese sailor who at the time was the record holder for the smallest sailboat world circumnavigation, took his new Selene 43 home on its own bottom. On April 10 of 2001 Aoki San left Clearwater Bay YC, Hong Kong and cruised non-stop to Isigaki Okinawa, Japan a 6.33 day journey of 1716 Nautical Miles (152 hours) burning 812 gallons (US) of diesel fuel. He benefited from an average north flowing current of 1.25 knots during his passage through the East China Sea, the Straights of Taiwan and the Sea of Japan. After a few days in Okinawa he continued the journey to his homeport of Osaka, another 6 days of cruising and reported back to the factory his pleasure with and confidence in his new yacht.
While PENGUIN CROSSING hasn’t done a passage of that length she has explored the west coast of the U.S. and Mexico extensively from her home port in Seal Beach, California. At one point she was shipped to the Pacific NW and cruised that area including British Columbia. She then came back to Seal Beach on her own bottom. Later on she was again shipped north to again cruise the PNW. In 2015 she left her U.S. west coast cruising ground and was shipped to Palm Beach and the cruised over to Florida’s west coast where she now resides.
In 2015 she had her electrical systems checked and $20,000 was spent in electrical upgrades including all new AGM batteries and new Inverter, a new Garmin 7612 chart plotter system installed in her PH.
Also new in 2015; fresh water pump and accumulator tank, macerator pump, grey water sump pump, generator water pump, head valve, running lights, ships horn, WS wipers, fenders & lines etc. She was recently waxed and polished and in March 2016 she was hauled and 2 coats of fresh bottom paint applied. Her zincs were renewed at that time. This was all done after the decision to sell her was made to ensure the new owner would have a proper boat to start their cruising plans.
Finding a Long Range cruising yacht in this condition is not an everyday occurrence and the fact that her current owner, a lifelong boater from the time he was 7, bought her from her original owners is the why she is a rare find. Now in his 80's he is retiring from boating and wants PENGUIN CROSSING to go to a good home.

Salon
Entering from the aft deck through the teak paneled heavy metal Dutch door you are immediately enveloped in the cozy but roomy feel of the salon and forward galley with its beautiful teak joinery and teak and holly sole. To port is an L-Settee with HI/Lo burled wood folding leaf table. There is storage below the settee including a drawer for easy access. The galley is separated from the salon by a Hi-top counter with Corian counter top, striking teak opposing grain accent panels with burl wood inlays front and 2 stainless steel stools with foot rests and leather seats.
To port forward is an angled end cabinet with burl wood top and storage behind a louvered teak door. There is a larger cabinet to starboard just as you enter the salon with storage behind its louvered teak door and below the burl wood counter top with lift up access. The stereo system is housed here. There are wood valances for the custom curtains, a teak carved sea rail overhead for safety underway and the headliner is dressed with athwart ship varnished teak accent molding boards. Large Diamond Seaglaze windows trimmed in teak surround the salon and offer 180 degree outside visibility even while seated. The stairway up to the pilothouse is forward to starboard and forward to port is the companionway down to the stateroom deck.
Galley
The galley is centered forward on the salon deck and has an aft facing high end Norcold refrigerator with separate freezer (new 8/11) with the Salon facing Panasonic flat panel TV & DVD player housed just above. This TV is hooked up to the HD Sat TV system. There is additional under counter chest freezer with Grunert holding plate forward and to port of the 3 burner Galley Maid Empress propane stove and oven. The GE microwave oven with turntable is just above and aft of this freezer. The galley has Corian counters, 2 under mount SS sinks with a single lever pull-out spray fixture and generous storage in overhead and below counter cabinets and drawers.
Additional storage for provisions is located below deck in the Commissary with 10cf deep freeze, a wine rack and dry storage.
Pilothouse
Proceeding forward to starboard we go up 5 steps to the Pilot House with its teak and holly sole and lower helm which is where the owner always runs the boat. The wheel is centered with the single lever Morse electronic engine control binnacle just forward to starboard. Visibility is excellent through the 3 inverted forward facing windshields, the two forward port and starboard side windshields, and the windows in the top sections of the port and starboard Dutch doors. There are also large windows just aft of those doors. The engine control panel with gauges is centered in the overhead console and the ships information center is in the overhead console to starboard. All the navigation electronics are in the lower aft facing console just above the counter top and easily accessed when at the helm. There is a comfortable forward facing raised settee just aft of the helm with storage below. When standing in the PH and looking around you realize you are aboard a little ship. The access to the FB and its center helm are to port and up another set of stairs through a sliding hatch and door.
Flybridge
This helm is centered also and is protected by a Bimini and four sided enclosure. The owner never runs from this station so there are limited navigation electronics at this helm but there is a Morse single lever electronic engine control at the helm and another all the way to starboard creating a wing station. Aft of the FB helm pilot & navigator seating is the boat deck and access to the mast and boom with steadying sail. This is also where the Apex A-9 RIB dinghy w/Nissan 3.5hp OB is stored and launched from using the Brower Systems power Davit. This area is also accessible from the aft deck via ladder and there are SS safety rails all around as well as a built in storage box and dock box for additional on deck storage.
Staterooms
Back in the salon we go to port and down the companionway stairs to the stateroom deck with its teak and holly soles. Immediately at the bottom of the stairs and to port is the launder center behind louvered teak doors with additional storage for laundry products, linens etc. above and below. Once on this level and slightly to the right is the port side guest stateroom with upper and lower berths, 2 opening ports a hanging locker and drawer storage. Across the companionway is the guest head with teak and holly sole, Corian counters, 2 opening ports, electric head and separate stall shower.
The entrance to the engine room is aft in this companionway through a double dogged door with observation window.
Proceeding forward is the master stateroom with its island berth, hanging lockers and plenty of drawer storage. The TV is hooked up to the HD Sat TV system. There are 4 opening ports and an overhead Manship hatch with screen and sun shade. The private head with 2 opening ports, a tub/shower, Corian counters and electric head is just aft of the SR and to starboard and has a teak and holly sole as does the master SR.
Engine Room
The engine room has easy access from the lower companionway as mentioned before and houses the Cummins B series 210hp diesel (1351 hrs.), Westerbeke 8kw gen-set (541 hrs.), fuel tanks, Racor fuel filters, batteries and other mechanical systems with good accessibility for daily checks and servicing.
Commissary
Located under the salon sole with access through a hatch just inside the door to the cockpit is the Commissary, a unique feature separate from the bilge with dry storage for provisions in several cabinets. There is also a built-in wine rack and custom teak tool chest down here. This beautifully finished space extends full beam port to starboard and bears out the fact that this is a true Long Range Ocean Trawler.
Aft Deck
The aft deck has a transom door for access to the lift-up swim platform. It is covered by the boat deck and has a ladder leading up through a Manship hatch to that deck. There are teak chairs and table for outside relaxing and the hatch to the lazarette and its storage and systems is through the non-skid deck. Those non-skid decks run forward along the wide covered side decks with the hull sides extending up almost to waist level and up to the protected walk way behind the Portuguese bridge. There are port and starboard side gates for easy, safe boarding part way along these side decks.
Foredeck
Once behind the Portuguese bridge you access the foredeck through a center door for handling forward lines, fenders and the ground tackle. This is also a nice area to sit while at anchor. There are very substantial high SS hand and safety rails and a large Sampson Post for securing the ground tackle.
