ALLIED

ALLIED - the yacht made for travelling

ALLIED (or Allied Boat Company) is a small shipyard opened in Catskill, New York. They built the fiberglass sailboats. The first of them - Seawind (with the length of 30 feet) was set afloat in 1960, two years before the official registration of the new company. Its designer, Thomas Gillmer, opened a shipyard in 1962.

Until 1981 this shipyard built the fiberglass yachts with the length of 30 to 42 feet. Gillmer collaborated closely with the naval architects that allowed him to achieve excellent results. In subsequent years, the company was closed four times until it went out of business completely. The problems occurred because of non-qualified management. Three companies tried to bring the shipyard back to life - Wright Yacht Company that bought Allied in 1975, International Cruising Yachts (since 1977) and CFG Yachts (in 1980). The efforts were in vain: the shipyard was closed.

One way or another, but Allied Boat Company has left its mark in the history of yacht building. It was here where the first sailboat with the fiberglass hull that made the trip around the world was built. Subsequently, one of the ALLIED boats was used by Robin Lee Graham, the youngest traveler who made the round-the-world trip. The fiberglass sailboats made by Allied, had the best speed performance. The Gillmer's experience became invaluable for other yacht builders: his best practices are still used, and the ALLIED yachts are sold at a high price.
