KRUPP

KRUPP - a legend from Germany

KRUPP is a German shipbuilding company, located in the harbor of Kiel, one of the largest and most important builders of submarines for the Kaiserliche Marine during World War I and for Kriegsmarine during World War II. The company was founded in 1867 and ended its existence in 1945 - immediately after the Second World War. The shipyard built the commercial and military vessels, including the submarines. During its best years they employed more than 10 thousand people.

The company was founded in 1867 by Lloyd Foster, it was called Norddeutsche Schiffbau-Gesellschaft. The shipyard was located in the city of Gaarden close to Kiel. The idea of the company was to produce the military and merchant ships. In 1876 the company built a personal yacht of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The company went bankrupt in 1879 and became the property of Markisch-Schlesischen Maschinenbau und Hutten-Aktiengesellschaft. They built the steam engines in Berlin since 1822. A few years later, the company was also in trouble, and at the end of 1882 a new company was established - Schiff und Maschinenbau Germania.

They built several warships. The company gained a very good reputation in relation to the construction of torpedo boats. However, the financial problems always accompanied it, and by the end of August 1896 the Krupp organization borne the responsibility for them, as the company was very interested in the construction of military ships. Between 1898 and 1902 the company doubled its production. In 1902, the shipyard changed its name - it was called KRUPP Germaniawerft.
