YACHTING IN BRAZILIA – WHAT’S KEPT UNDER WRAPS

Brazil hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics and, after that, was recognized as a world-class yachting power that was formerly unknown to anyone. Many charter yachts are now changing their traditional winter season in the Caribbean Basin to visit the largest South American country. Angra dos Reis, or the Bay of Kings, is one of the most attractive destinations for charter yachts. This bay of 365 islands is situated 60 miles to the southeast of Rio de Janeiro and the aborigines say that there’s an island for every day of the year. Ilha Grande (Large Island) shelters tranquil waters with mild temperatures and these places have a very pleasant tropical climate. The warmest months are from October to April though it’s not dangerous to take a dip as the water remains around 70 degrees year-round. Many of the marvelous beaches are empty and in the jungles and nature preserves you can watch waterfalls, see howler monkeys in trees, snorkel in transparent water, and examine interesting hamlets. Drop by floating restaurants, especially Barco Bar or Jango’s, and sip the local cocktail Caipirinha with fermented sugar cane. day 1Rio de Janeiro to Abraao

Before you move south to Angra des Reis where you’ll meet your yacht, have a helicopter fly you above Rio de Janeiro where the aerial views of Copacabana Beach and Sugarloaf Mountain are superb. If you depart promptly, you’ll arrive at Ilha Grande and anchor there in serene Saco de Ceu which used to be a hiding place for buccaneers.

day 2Ilha Grande to Gipoia

Plenty of howler monkeys live in the national park of Ilha Grande and the area can be toured from the neighboring town of Vila do Abraao. Vila do Abraao is the largest town on the island with a lot of restaurants but no car traffic. It will take a little time to reach Gipoia, but in Praia do Dentista you can be taken by canoe to floating restaurants. You’ll also have the chance to examine the neighboring beaches.

day 3Gipoia to Ensanada dos Palmas

Beach lovers will find Ensanada dos Palmas at the eastern end of Ilha Grande where the quiet waters are good for swimming and jet skiing. You can choose from a great variety of picnic lunches in the morning and your supper at Matariz Bay will include fresh oysters and scallops.

day 4Ensanada does Palmas to Paraty

On the way, you can pause at Praia do Pouso, a tranquil inlet with a waterfall not far off that you can swim under. Paraty was once one of the richest towns on the globe during the years of colonial gold mining. Now, it’s a tranquil place with animal-drawn carting and cobblestone streets fringed with boutiques, art galleries, and Brazilian jewelry in shops.

day 5Paraty to Ilha da Cotia

It’s nice to do last minute shopping in Paraty before a short voyage to Praia where you’ll find a marvelous beach with a waterfall nearby. Or, you can choose to go to Paraty-Mirim, a fjord-like inlet framed with jungle on the hillsides. You’ll find bright-red starfish that live in the clean waters curling around your hand.

day 6Ilha da Cotia to Ilga de Paqueta

You can take the time to examine the numerous beaches near Paraty or go straight to Ilha de Paqueta. You can ride a horse in the afternoon or use the water toys aboard your yacht. Have lunch in a Brazilian manner with a French touch at Chez Dominique where you can dine on yummy steak au poivre and caramelized bananas.

day 7Ilha de Parqueta to Rio de Janeiro

The way back to Angra dos Reis is short so you can have brunch lazing in the Angra does Reis inlet where woody hills are dotted with fine villas. Soon, you’ll go ashore and fly back to civilization.
