Overview
ANGUS is an uncommon 1939, 50’ steel Burger classic motor yacht, standing among the most superb surviving showcases of early American yacht craftsmanship. Launched as a private cruiser by Burger Boat Company, she later took on a research mission with Grand Valley State University, operating solely in the freshwater of Lake Michigan.
She still carries her original Kahlenberg four‑cylinder diesel, fully functional, and benefited from a Burger‑supervised restoration and preservation initiative (2011–2012), followed by fastidious mechanical recommissioning under her present owner. Running comfortably at 9–10 knots, ANGUS is offered in notably original, mechanically faithful condition, presenting a rare chance to secure a historically important, turn‑key classic yacht.
Detailed Description
Angus
Angus is a rare 1939, fifty-foot steel Burger motor yacht, originally designed and delivered as a private yacht and built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Later serving in a research capacity with Grand Valley State University's Robert B. Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI), she has remained exclusively in freshwater service on Lake Michigan throughout her life.
She retains her original Kahlenberg four-cylinder diesel engine driving a forty-two-inch steel propeller, with the engine and drivetrain in excellent operating condition—“runs like a top”—and the current owner has mechanically recommissioned the vessel to operate exactly as originally designed. Burger Boat Company completed a comprehensive restoration and preservation program in 2011–2012, and this documented 2011/2012 work, complemented by new interior cushions and an updated stove and refrigerator, brings her to truly turnkey operating condition.
Cruising comfortably at nine to ten knots, Angus is presented in highly original, mechanically authentic condition. She deliberately avoids over-restoration to preserve the details collectors value, while offering thoughtful updates that make her immediately usable. This authentic, pre-war Burger with genuine provenance combines originality, documented restoration, lifelong Lake Michigan freshwater history, and strong mechanical integrity for an owner who appreciates both history and function.
