Detailed Description

Description

Ocotillo is an absolute head‑turner, a gorgeous Island Packet 420 that has been lightly used in the Northeast since new and professionally maintained by Hinckley Yacht Services in Portsmouth, RI. In April it will be recommissioned and launched for the 2025 sailing season, presenting as smartly as it sails. Her pedigree and the level of care are evident everywhere: the hull was painted in 2020 and has been retouched each year; the exterior brightwork was fully refinished in 2022 with annual touch‑ups thereafter; and the bottom was carefully prepped and painted in the winter of 2023. Comfort and protection on deck were enhanced in 2021 with new cockpit cushions, a new dodger, and a new bimini, while handling and cruising capability are elevated by a bow thruster, Kato dinghy davits, and an in‑mast furling mainsail. Safety and reliability are further underscored by new lifelines fitted in 2020, climate control delivered by two air‑conditioning units installed in 2020 together with Espar diesel heat for cool‑weather passages, and push‑button sailing with three electric winches added in 2021. The result is a refined, turnkey IP 420 that marries classic good looks with thoroughly updated systems and an easy, confident sailing experience.

Overview

Recent improvements on Ocotillo read like the ideal refit list for a serious cruising yacht. On the exterior, the hull was painted Navy Blue in 2020 and has been touched up each year; the bottom was meticulously prepped and painted during the winter of 2023; all running lines and blocks were replaced in 2021; and the original steering wheel made way for a folding wheel in 2020. Protection and comfort were elevated with a new dodger and bimini in 2021, complemented by new cockpit cushions the same year, and safety was enhanced with new lifelines in 2020. The exterior brightwork was re‑varnished with ten coats in 2022 and retouched annually; the frame and glass on all hatches were replaced in 2021; a folding prop was fitted in 2020; custom companionway doors arrived in 2022; new Sony stereo speakers refreshed the cockpit sound in 2020; Island Packet supplied a new cockpit table in 2021; three electric winches were installed in 2022 and all winches are serviced annually; the port seals and screens were replaced in 2021; and new hatch covers were added in 2024. Inside, comfort and function were refined with new cushions and bedding in 2020; a new cushioned seat was built in the owner’s berth in 2020; the stove, freezer, and refrigerator were refurbished in 2021; LED lighting was added in 2021; more than six new fans were installed in 2021; new fire extinguishers were placed in 2022; new shower heads were fitted in 2021; both electric toilets were rebuilt in 2022; OceanAir hatch shades and screens were installed in 2022; the nav station desktop was stripped and refinished; and fast, reliable connectivity was added with Starlink in 2024. Mechanically, the boat benefits from annual winterizing and spring recommissioning, two new HVAC units installed in 2020, a new macerator pump in 2022, a new freshwater pump in 2021 followed by another new freshwater pump in 2024, a new water heater in 2024, six new batteries in 2024, and a new alternator in 2020 with the old alternator rebuilt as a spare. The HVAC pump was renewed in 2020, a new Sony stereo was added in 2019, and in 2019 the freshwater and blackwater tanks were emptied and cleaned, with only fresh water used to flush toilets ever since.

Step below on Ocotillo and you are greeted by a spacious, well‑planned interior filled with natural light, excellent ventilation, unmatched storage, thoughtfully placed handholds, and quality finishes that include teak joinery, durable stainless‑steel portlights, and a beautiful teak‑and‑holly cabin sole. With generous tankage and a two‑stateroom/two‑head layout that easily accommodates two couples—or up to seven with the pull‑out starboard settee—she is as comfortable as she is capable. The forward cabin spans the full beam and offers a private head with a dedicated shower; the comfortable offset double bed is accessible from both sides so no one needs to climb over a partner, and the bed base lifts easily on gas struts to reveal a large storage area. Additional storage abounds with shelves, cabinets, bureaus, drawers, a cedar‑lined hanging locker, and a seat. The forward head features a dedicated shower area with a folding door, a sink vanity with storage over and under, linen drawers, and forepeak access. The salon feels open and bright, with two long settees flanking a folding dining table that hinges from its bulkhead rack to create either a generous serving/dining area or a completely open space; when folded down, the table reveals integrated storage for bottles and glassware. The L‑shaped starboard settee pulls out to form a double berth, and thanks to well‑placed handholds the salon is easy to traverse underway, with tremendous dry storage throughout. The nav station to starboard just forward of the galley features a full‑size chart table that lifts for storage, an electric swing‑out seat, a locker beneath the table, and a dedicated chart drawer under the starboard settee. The secure U‑shaped galley maximizes counter space and stowage, with heavily insulated refrigerator/freezer capacity for serious provisioning; it includes a double stainless‑steel sink, a three‑burner stove/oven, and a built‑in microwave. The private aft cabin, with direct access to the aft head, offers a large double berth, a cedar‑lined hanging locker, a bureau, and a bookshelf; the aft head opens to both salon and aft cabin and provides a sink vanity with lockers over and under, a wraparound shower with curtain, and a teak fold‑down seat. Headroom measures 6' 5". Climate control is delivered by Dometic Turbo 16000 BTU (2020) and Dometic Turbo 12000 BTU (2020) air conditioning units and an Espar diesel cabin heater. Ventilation and light are superb with eight opening deck hatches fitted with OceanAir shades/screens (2021), upper frame and glass replaced on all hatches (2021), and stainless‑steel opening ports with port seals and screens replaced in 2020. Custom mattresses in the forward and aft cabins complement the new cushions and bedding (2020), LED lights (2021), more than six fans (2021), OceanAir hatch shades/screens (2021), and the refinished nav station desktop.

The galley is comprehensively equipped for extended cruising, featuring a Princess three‑burner LPG stove and oven, refurbished stove, freezer, and fridge units (2020), an Origo microwave oven, and two aluminum LPG cylinders with OPDs installed in a starboard‑side deck locker. Cold storage is robust with two Adler Barbour 12‑volt air‑cooled refrigeration systems. A large wrap‑around counter with sea rails on all edges provides secure prep space, complemented by a double stainless‑steel sink with cutting board, a hot/cold pressure water system, and a freshwater hand pump. Thoughtful stowage includes a teak dish rack, cutlery drawers, and abundant compartments above and below the counters, including three deep drawers.

On deck and in the cockpit, cruising features abound: dinghy davits by Kato Marine, a folding wheel (2020), dodger and bimini (2021), cockpit cushions (2021), and a cockpit table (2022), together with new custom companionway doors (2022). A stainless‑steel transom boarding ladder and sugar‑scoop transom ease water access, while two stern rail seats, two cockpit lockers with self‑securing latches and pneumatic arms, and an Island Packet teak fold‑out cockpit table (2022) enhance comfort and utility. Built‑in line bins in the cockpit coaming have teak covers and cup holders; a NavPod mounts electronics at the helm; Sony stereo speakers were added to the cockpit in 2020; and a cockpit shower adds convenience. Deck security and serviceability include stainless‑steel grabrails on the deckhouse top, three lifeline gates—stern, port, and starboard—new lifelines (2020), and three cowls/dorades on the deckhouse top. The glass on all hatches was replaced in 2021, hatch covers were renewed in 2024, and the port seals and screens were replaced in 2021. Finishing touches include Island Packet stainless‑steel step plates port and starboard and stainless‑steel mast pulpits to port and starboard. The foredeck is supplied with pressure saltwater. Ground tackle is cruiser‑ready with a large anchor platform carrying two anchor rollers, a windlass, a Bruce 20 kg claw anchor secured on a bowsprit roller, and a medium Danforth anchor stored in the rode locker, with inflatable fenders, dock lines, and spring lines included. The hull was painted Navy Blue in approximately 2020 and touched up annually; the exterior brightwork was re‑varnished in 2022 and refreshed each year; and the bottom was prepped and painted in the winter of 2023. Note that the AB RIB and outboard motor do not convey with the vessel.

Sails and rigging are set up for effortless passagemaking: an aluminum keel‑stepped mast and a cutter rig with two sets of aluminum spreaders pair with a Harken roller‑furling headstay and a Harken roller‑furling inner forestay served by a self‑tending boom. A traveler, genoa tracks, and an in‑mast furling mainsail round out the platform. All running rigging and blocks were replaced in 2021. The sail wardrobe comprises a Doyle mainsail (2010), Doyle staysail (2014), and Doyle genoa (2014), with all sails inspected and serviced during the winter of 2021/2022. Three Harken electric winches (2021) support push‑button trim, and all winches are serviced annually.

Electronics are equally capable: a Raymarine eS Series S98 9" MFD with WiFi integrates navigation; radar is provided by a Raymarine 4KW 18" Radome; VHF communications include a Standard Horizon Matrix AIS+ GX2150 at the nav station and a Standard Horizon Ram 3 Command mic at the helm, backed by a handheld Standard Horizon HX300. Autopilot duties are handled by a Raytheon ST6000+ linear drive with helm control. Instrumentation includes a Raymarine i70 instrument in the galley plus Raytheon ST60 Depth, ST60 Wind, and ST60 Speed. Entertainment is via a Sony radio mounted at the nav station feeding two Sony speakers in the cockpit (2020) and two speakers in the salon, while a Ritchie Powerdamp compass provides trustworthy heading. Starlink was added in 2024 for dependable connectivity offshore.

The electrical system is robust and thoughtfully laid out. Ship’s AC power is a 120‑volt, 60 hertz system with a 120‑volt AC electrical distribution panel, AC volts and amperes meters, a line selection switch, interlocking shore 1/generator/inverter main breakers, and interlocking shore 2/parallel main breakers, together with two reversed polarity indicator lights. There are six labeled breaker‑protected 110‑volt circuits and six spare breaker positions, plus unused generator controls ready for future installation. Shore power enters via two 30 amp/125‑volt connection fittings with breakers at each inlet, protected by two installed Zinc Saver II galvanic isolators, and all 110‑volt outlet circuits have GFCI protection. Charging and inversion are handled by a Charles C‑Charger 40 amp 5000‑series automatic marine battery charger and a Statpower ProSine 1800‑watt inverter installed aft outboard of the starboard settee. The 12‑volt DC system provides an electrical distribution panel, DC volts and amperes meters, a battery test switch, a Xantrex LinkLite battery monitor, a DC main breaker, twenty‑four labeled breaker‑protected 12‑volt circuits, and four labeled fuse‑protected 12‑volt circuits, plus a USB charger outlet. House energy storage was renewed with six 12‑volt batteries in 2024.

Plumbing is clean, capable, and recently updated. An aluminum waste holding tank sits under the forward cabin sole; both freshwater and blackwater tanks were emptied and cleaned in 2019, and only fresh water is used to flush toilets. Fuel and water tanks are aluminum, with a tank‑level indicator for both fuel and water. A manual bilge pump is mounted in the cockpit, while a 12‑volt submersible bilge pump with float switch is installed in the deep bilge sump below the salon sole. Both toilets discharge to the holding tank, with the forward toilet also able to discharge overboard through a seacock. The holding tank can be emptied at a pump‑out station through a deck fitting or discharged overboard via seacock by a 12‑volt macerator pump. The galley features a hot/cold pressure water tap and a freshwater manual hand pump; there are two freshwater Jabsco electric‑flush toilets (both rebuilt in 2022); two remote 12‑volt shower sump pumps with manual switches; hot/cold pressure water taps in both heads; new shower heads (2021); and a cockpit shower. A macerator pump was replaced in 2022, the freshwater pump was renewed in 2024, and the water heater was renewed in 2024.

Mechanically, Ocotillo is powered by a Yanmar 75 HP turbo diesel engine, model 4JH3‑TE, showing approximately 3,500 hours. A comprehensive engine cooling system service was performed in late 2024, including the heat exchanger, aftercooler, and oil cooler, together with cleaning of the turbo intake filter and charge pipe; engine fluids and filters were changed in late 2024 as well. Annual mechanical winterization and commissioning are observed. Propulsion efficiency is supported by a feathering prop that was cleaned, polished, and lubricated in 2024, a Racor fuel filter/water separator, and fuel that was polished with the tank cleaned in late 2024; a remote 12‑volt fuel pump is installed. The cockpit engine panel includes a tachometer, a coolant temperature gauge, and an oil pressure gauge with a warning light/alarm system. A single‑lever throttle and shift with shifter lockout is fitted at the helm, and a 12‑volt blower ventilates the engine compartment, which offers excellent access. Dockside and close‑quarters control is assured by a Side Power 12‑volt bow thruster and a Simpson Lawrence 12‑volt anchor windlass. The alternator was renewed in 2020 and the original alternator was rebuilt as a spare, and prop, shaft, and engine zincs were replaced in late 2024.

Rounding out the specification, safety and miscellaneous gear include fire extinguishers (2022), a Lifesling, life preserves, a boat hook, new lifelines (2022), winches, and a suite of spare parts.
