Detailed Description
Description
The IP40 is a superior cruising yacht celebrated for a practical, seamanlike layout with generous elbow room and abundant storage throughout. With an improved hull, keel and rudder shape and a powerful cutter rig, she delivers poised, predictable performance and reassuring safety across a wide range of sea states, while remaining quiet, comfortable and composed. Exceptionally clean, thoroughly equipped and carefully maintained, she invites confident passagemaking and unhurried living aboard in equal measure.
Overview
A guided walk-through of “Karaya,” a 1995 Island Packet 40 designed by Bob Johnson, reveals why her generous beam so gracefully accommodates two staterooms and two heads without compromising circulation, stowage or style. Beginning forward, the private Owner’s Stateroom features an ensuite head with a shower complete with seat and curtain, a commode and a sink, all framed by abundant cabinetry. Ventilation is excellent via an opening hatch and four opening ports. Aft within the Owner’s sleeping area, the large starboard Pullman berth sits above six deep drawers and faces a truly capacious port-side hanging locker and a bank of three bins with drop‑down doors, maximizing clothing and gear stowage. This sanctuary is bright and breezy thanks to a large opening hatch, three opening ports, a 12V fan and LED lighting.
Aft, the Main Saloon welcomes with a bulkhead‑mounted table that seats seven and folds away when not in use, opening the space for easy movement. A large convertible starboard settee transforms into a double berth opposite a straight port settee, ideal for extra seating, entertaining and luxurious naps. Stowage abounds under and behind both settees, with additional shelves and lockers above. A large opening hatch and four opening ports, complemented by a 12V fan and LED lights, keep the saloon light and air‑washed.
Just aft to starboard, the aft‑facing Nav Station places the electric panel and navigation repeaters within effortless reach. The desk is properly sized for chartwork with dedicated space for navigation tools. Further aft on starboard, the large U‑shaped Galley is a secure sea‑going workstation with a double sink, faucet and hand‑held sprayer, a manual cold‑water hand pump and a large refrigerator/freezer. Smart stowage solutions include a custom spice rack, dish and cup holders, utensil drawers, two large lockers and an under‑counter dry‑goods bin. The galley stays cool and bright with an opening hatch, two opening ports, a 12V fan and LED lighting, plus an extra custom LED over the sink.
Opposite to port, the Day Head serves both the saloon and aft cabin via separate entrances. It offers a shower with a seat, a sink, a commode and a full‑length teak mirror; an opening hatch and port preserve comfort at anchor and underway. Aft of the galley, the Quarter Berth provides a generous dressing area with a big hanging locker and a bank of two bins with drop‑down doors at the entry. It is equally light and airy with an opening hatch, two opening ports, a 12V fan and LED lights. A cleverly hung net secures additional gear out of the way. Centered between the galley and day head, the companionway rises over the insulated engine compartment; removing the quarter‑berth cushions reveals the full drive train, while an LED light over the engine simplifies maintenance. On deck, the cockpit is safe, comfortable and amply sized for sailing, entertaining and napping, with cockpit cushions, a dodger, bimini, connecting panel and a full enclosure with side screens, clear vinyl panels and sunshades to protect the crew in all conditions.
Creature comforts and thoughtful upgrades abound: saloon cushions are recovered in cream Ultraleather with new fillers; five 12V fans move air throughout; all 12V lights are upgraded to LED bulbs; hatch and port screens admit breeze while keeping insects out; café‑style companionway doors with screens are removable for using drop‑down boards; hot/cold pressure water is on tap. Climate control is superb via a Marine Air 16,000 BTU air conditioner/heat pump with a separate electric service, and an insulated duct system delivers comfort to each cabin and both heads. Privacy is assured with PeekaBoo shades for ports. Classic touches include a brass clock and barometer and a brass port‑styled mirror. The galley inventory extends to a GE microwave and a Princess three‑burner stove/oven. Additional refinements include a weather display, a custom book case and shelves, a museum‑security picture frame in the saloon, a carbon monoxide detector, clever use of netting and hammock material for extra stowage, an extra horizontal teak handhold outside the day head, and even cleaning supplies including a brush and buckets.
Electrical systems are robust and cruiser‑ready. The IP 40 carries both a 12Volt ship’s system and two 120Volt shorepower systems with dedicated services for the heat pump and the house. The house bank comprises four 4D AGM batteries delivering 800AH (installed 5/2014), while engine starting is handled by one Group 27 AGM battery rated at 90AH (installed 5/20/19). Charging is optimized by a Balmar 105‑amp high‑output alternator regulated by a Balmar ARS III three‑stage regulator, with a Balmar digital battery combiner and a heavy‑duty battery switch with 1/2" studs and load‑switching capability. A Zantrex 2500‑watt three‑stage charger/inverter manages AC/DC needs. Domestic amenities include an 11‑gallon hot‑water tank, a 12V outlet at the companionway and a dedicated switch at the nav station for the mast‑mounted tri‑color. Shorepower is versatile with one 50‑amp 25' shorepower cord with a 30‑amp splitter and two 30‑amp 50' shorepower cords.
Electronics and navigation are fully integrated so you can navigate with confidence from the helm or the chart table. “Karaya” features Furuno radar, B&G GPS, knotmeter, depthsounder, wind instrument and ICOM VHF and SSB radios, with data thoughtfully repeated at both the nav station and the helm. At the helm: a B&G Quad presenting knot, depth and timer; a B&G wind machine displaying both speed and direction; a B&G autopilot with a hydraulic linear drive; B&G GPS Plus; and a Furuno 7" flat‑panel control with radar/chart‑plotter/depth display. A mast‑mounted Furuno 24 nm radar dome sits on a deluxe stainless Kato mast mount with a protective ring guard, and an ICOM 424 DSC VHF radio is paired with a cockpit remote.
At the navigation desk, B&G data repeats speed, depth, wind voltage, heading, temperature and timer from the helm, while a B&G GPS serves as both repeater and back‑up for the primary GPS. Long‑range communications are handled by an ICOM 802 SSB radio with a PACTOR 3 modem capable of laptop connectivity, matched to an ICOM AT‑130 antenna tuner feeding an insulated backstay antenna. A counterpoise system (ground plane) with copper grounding foil directly grounds the mast and all boat systems, augmented by Dynaplate grounding on the keel. A Furuno model 10" radar/chart‑plotter display enhances situational awareness. An additional ICOM 424 DSC VHF radio, an AIS transceiver and a Link 2000 energy monitoring system round out the core suite. Entertainment is supplied by a Sony MEXN5000BT AM/FM/CD/iPod/SiriusXM stereo with remote and a deluxe Bose speaker system with independent mini tweeters.
Other equipment and systems include a multiplexed serial‑ports‑to‑USB system feeding navigation data to a laptop, a masthead TV antenna and KVH TracVision TV1 satellite antenna system, plus a flat‑screen digital TV, DVD and Dish Wally TV receiver. Classic instruments extend to a brass tide clock. For visibility and safety, she carries a Firdell Blipper and a mast‑mounted radar reflector, with a Davis Echomaster on the port‑side flag halyard, a tricolor at the masthead with an off/on switch at the nav station, and a flag halyard at the starboard spreader. Lightning protection is provided by NoStrike at the masthead, and a registered 406 MHz EPIRB (Litton model 952‑02) Cat II stands ready for true blue‑water security.
Sail handling is powerful yet easily managed. The Island Packet 40 is cutter‑rigged, with running rigging led aft to the cockpit except for the headsail halyards. The full‑batten, loose‑footed mainsail has two reef points operated from the cockpit, and a Dutchman three‑line flaking system with a custom‑fit zippered sail cover streamlines dousing and stowage. Forward, a self‑tacking staysail runs on Schaeffer furling, complemented by a 130% genoa on Schaeffer furling for versatile power across the wind range. Winch power includes two Lewmar Ocean Series 48CST primaries, two Lewmar ST‑2 Speed Ocean Series secondaries and two Lewmar ST‑2 Speed halyard winches on the mast, supported by two deluxe Harken winch handles. A spinnaker halyard, a spare main halyard and a Winchard boom brake/preventer further expand the sail plan’s control envelope.
On deck, construction and equipment are all‑ocean capable. “Karaya” features a solid‑glass hull with an integral full‑foil keel and bow sprit and is equipped with Island Packet’s optional teak rubrail with a stainless‑steel striker; the deck is synthetically cored for strength and weight savings. Ground tackle is exemplary: an SL Anchorman 1200 reversible anchor windlass with bow and cockpit controls, deluxe chain stoppers and stainless protection plates. The primary anchor is a 65# Bruce on the starboard side with 275' of 5/16" HiTest chain; the secondary on port is a 45# CQR with 50' of 5/16" HiTest chain and 200' of nylon rode. A special anchor roller accommodates the larger 65# Bruce. A custom 1" stainless‑steel rod passes through the bow sprit with large stainless eyes on both sides for robust securing options. An anchor and deck raw‑water washdown, Island Packet step plates at lifeline gates, web jack lines with pad eyes on port and starboard and in the cockpit, a cockpit fresh‑water shower and line hooks in the anchor locker make foredeck work clean, safe and efficient.
Tender handling and protection are equally well thought out: Kato dinghy davits with antennas attached support an Achilles 8'10" hard‑bottom rigid inflatable dinghy with a storage compartment, while a 20' vinyl‑coated lifeline with eyes simplifies securing the dinghy to docks. Propulsion for the tender is a Mercury 3.5HP four‑stroke outboard, with an Edson motor mount on the stern rail and a Motor Mate OB engine hoist for hassle‑free deployment. A folding dinghy anchor with 50' of light rode is included. Canvas is comprehensive and color‑matched in elegant sand‑colored Sunbrella: dodger with side and aft handrails, bimini and connecting panel, and a full enclosure with clear vinyl and screen side curtains plus sun shades. Sunbrella covers protect the pedestal, winches and binnacle, and a Sunbrella windshield cover completes the set. Helm ergonomics benefit from a helmsman’s seat with backrest and fitted cockpit cushions, a fishing rod holder, an elk‑hide wheel cover and a beautiful custom cockpit table with drop‑down leaves.
Mechanically, the yacht is driven by a 4‑cylinder, freshwater‑cooled Yanmar diesel, supported by an electric bilge pump with auto and manual functions, an engine‑room exhaust fan and 12V light, an electric macerator pumpout, a dripless packing gland and a De‑Bug fuel decontamination unit—practical reliability that underwrites every mile.
