Overview

The 2002 Pacific Seacraft 40 Cutter, Paloma, is offered at $149,000 USD and lies in Napa, California, presenting a refined gateway into the world of true offshore sailing. Conceived by the acclaimed Bill Crealock, this ocean-capable cruising yacht embodies the poise and pedigree that define a legendary blue-water cruiser, yet stands apart for its remarkably gentle life and unusually careful stewardship. Sheltered for much of its existence, the yacht’s gelcoat gleams, the spar shows beautifully, and the timeless Pacific Seacraft interior remains crisp, inviting, and elegantly preserved.

For sailors seeking a cutter-rigged, oceangoing monohull with real substance, Paloma is a rare find. Her early seasons were spent on the Chesapeake out of Annapolis, where she was conscientiously hauled and professionally shrink-wrapped at the close of each season, limiting UV exposure and the cumulative fatigue typical of continuously berthed vessels. In 2014 she was transported overland to California and placed securely on the hard, where she rested for roughly a dozen years while her owners focused on an intensive business chapter—an unusual “hibernation” that kept her out of the elements and spared her the incremental wear seen on most boats of this vintage. In 2025/2026, as the owners prepared for new horizons and relocated to British Columbia, the mast was freshly stepped and significant attention was devoted to bringing her mechanical and structural standards right to form.

The recent refit work is both thoughtful and tangible. The rig has been comprehensively renewed with brand-new standing rigging paired to new chainplates, giving confidence to the cutter rig’s power and balance. The hull presents with a handsome sheen, and the bottom now benefits from a brand-new barrier coat—an enduring investment in hull protection for serious passage-making. Under the companionway, a 56 HP Yanmar diesel with notably low hours delivers quiet reliability, exactly what you want in an auxiliary for long-range cruising. Sails report in excellent condition, and belowdecks the hallmark Pacific Seacraft joinery and upholstery remain beautifully conserved, evoking the warmth and restraint that liveaboard cruisers and passagemakers appreciate on extended voyages.

Because she spent an extended period on the hard, Paloma’s legacy electronics are due for modernization. She is intentionally priced to allow her next custodian to install a personalized suite of contemporary navigation and communications—think high-definition radar, AIS, integrated autopilot, and multifunction displays—tailored to your preferred style of offshore or coastal cruising. With the structural backbone, rig integrity, and mechanicals in enviable order, you can focus your investment on smart technology and any final commissioning details that suit your vision.

Dimensionally, this fiberglass monohull sailing yacht measures an LOA of 40'0" with a beam of 12'4" and a confident 5'0" draft, displacing approximately 24,000 lbs (about 10 gross tons). Tankage is generous for a vessel of her class, with 40 gallons of fuel, 150 gallons of freshwater, and a 15-gallon holding tank, offering the autonomy and balance that distinguish a true offshore cruising sailboat.

If your priorities include robust construction, low engine hours, and a yacht that has been largely spared decades of relentless sun and marina life, Paloma belongs at the top of your shortlist. Sidestep the hidden compromises that can accompany heavily chartered or perpetually immersed older boats and step aboard a beautifully preserved Crealock classic—an elegant, capable cruising yacht ready to be finished to your taste and set loose on blue water.

Detailed Description

Accommodations

Throughout, the yacht is climate-controlled by Marine Air 16,000 BTU reverse-cycle AC/heat complemented by an Espar forced-air diesel furnace, with extensive storage offering over forty different cabinets and drawers. The satin-varnished teak and holly cabin sole sets a warm tone, enhanced by fourteen chromed cast-bronze portlights with screens and four Bomar hatches with screens for abundant natural light and ventilation. Illumination and airflow are thoughtfully refined with seven Alpenglow chrome reading lights, ten Alpenglow teak-framed red/white overhead lights, and seven Hella cabin fans.

Forward, the owner’s stateroom features a spacious, full-width berth with a custom, hinged Handcraft mattress and its own Marine Air 5000 BTU reverse-cycle AC/heat. Practicality meets elegance with bureau drawers under the berth, full-length shelves on both sides, a cedar-lined hanging locker to starboard with a louvered teak door, and additional cabinetry to port.

In the main cabin, a large U-shaped dinette to starboard converts to a double berth and centers around a teak table with removable drop-leafs, while a settee/berth to port provides extra seating or sleeping. The galley lies to starboard, opposite a large sit-down nav-station to port with drawers underneath. An enclosed head to port is fitted with a bronze manual head, a vanity and sink with a Corian counter, and a separate shower stall with a custom eight-inch raised lip, plus hot and cold pressurized water at the vanity and a freshwater foot pump.

The guest stateroom is aft to starboard and fitted with a Handcraft latex/foam mattress, a cedar-lined locker, and two opening ports.

The galley is equipped for serious cruising with a Force-10 three-burner LPG stove with oven and broiler, Glacier Bay MK2 12-volt refrigeration, and a side- and top-loading box with Glacier Bay Ultra R insulation panels. Deep, double stainless steel sinks supply hot and cold pressure water along with Seagull filtered drinking water, while Corian countertops and generous cabinet and drawer storage complete the space.

Electronics include B&G h1000 instruments (knot/log, depth, wind), a B&G autopilot, and a Raytheon RL80C radar/chartplotter at the nav-station paired with a Raystar 120GPS antenna, plus a B&G h1000 repeater at the nav-station. Communications are handled by an Icom M502 VHF transceiver and an Icom M710 SSB transceiver, complemented by a Practor 2 pro modem for internet connection via SSB. Entertainment comes via an Alpine stereo/CD with two Boston Acoustics speakers in the main cabin and two Alpin speakers in the cockpit.

Under sail, a Forespar mast and boom anchor a cutter rig with Harken furlers on both headstays. A full-batten mainsail with three reefs and lazyjacks feeds smoothly on a low-friction, ball-bearing Harken Battcar system on the mast lufftrack. The headsail inventory includes a furling 130% genoa with a foam luff and UV cover and a furling 10 oz storm/staysail with a foam luff and UV cover, supported by a cruising spinnaker with an ATN sock and a storm trysail on a dedicated track. Running checkstays are ready for heavy weather, while a Forespar solid vang, a Harken mainsheet traveler, and a Forespar adjustable whisker pole that stows on the mast with track adjustment deliver precise sail control. A Navtec hydraulic backstay adjuster and a spare main halyard add redundancy. Deck hardware is robust, with ten Harken two-speed self-tailing winches: two #46 primary, two #40 secondary, three #40 for halyard/reef/staysheet on the coach roof, #44 mainsheet on the coach roof, and #40 and #32 on the mast. Line management is streamlined by fifteen Spinlock Cam-0814 clutch stoppers for halyards, reefs, and more, with four on the mast and eleven on the coach roof.

Electrical systems are comprehensive, featuring two 110V shore power inlets with cords and galvanic isolators, a 220-volt shore power inlet, and a parallel AV breaker. A Link 2000 battery monitoring system oversees charging from a Heart Freedom 20 inverter/charger and a Truecharge 40 battery charger. The vessel carries a Group 31 starting battery and a house battery bank of three Lifeline AGM 8D’s, with an 80-amp alternator dedicated to the starting battery and a 200-amp Balmar alternator for the house bank. An emergency parallel switch provides backup assurance, and an additional bilge pump with a float switch is mounted six inches higher than the primary pump.

Engine and mechanical systems center on a Yanmar 4JH-5E 56 hp diesel (600 hours), turning a three blade Maxprop. Serviceability is enhanced by a custom oil changing system, dual Racor fuel filters and a fuel gauge, and numerous spare parts. The LPG system includes 20 lb and 10 lb tanks with a remote solenoid. Bilge management is robust with an automatic electric bilge pump, a secondary backup automatic bilge pump that activates at a higher water level, and a manual bilge pump in the cockpit.

On deck, the minimal teak option is paired with stainless steel handrails and a slotted aluminum toerail. A factory/custom, reinforced wraparound stern rail provides support for the bimini, which pairs with a dodger for protection. A Monitor self-steering vane stands ready for passagemaking, while cockpit cushions elevate comfort. Additional features include a rail-mounted LPG BBQ grill with a dedicated supply line, a Winslow six person liferaft in a valise, four Wichard folding padeyes for dinghy tiedown, and six stainless steel padeyes for jacklines, a preventer, and running checkstays. Practical details abound: a raw water deck/anchor washdown, four Vetus dorade boxes/cowls, a folding swim ladder, four cockpit coaming boxes, a cockpit shower, an outboard bracket on the sternrail, and a Lexan-style companionway slider with solid teak dropboards and additional screenboards.

Ground tackle is expedition-ready with a Lighthouse 1501 electric anchor windlass with reverse circuit and a Pacific Seacraft signature stainless steel/teak bow platform/sprit with dual rollers and bobstay. To starboard sits a 45 lb CQR anchor with 300' of 5/16 G4HT continuous chain featuring custom oversize links and shackles at both ends. To port, a Spade 100 anchors on 25' of 5/16 G4HT chain with custom oversize links and shackles at both ends and 300' of 5/8" three-strand nylon rode. A stern rod comprises 20' of 5/16" G4HT chain with oversize links and shackles at both ends and 200' of 5/8" three-strand nylon rope rode, with a roller/chock at the stern and a bracket for a Danforth anchor. A spare anchor—a three piece Luke storm (Fisherman) 55 lb—completes the inventory.
