Overview
Discover the allure of M/Y STEEL, a 55-meter oceangoing expedition superyacht crafted by Pendennis Shipyard in the UK and handed over in 2009, conceived for genuine blue-water cruising and far-flung expeditions. Built to ice-class with a formidable steel hull measuring 3 cm in thickness, she is purpose-designed to push through approximately 80 cm of sea ice, delivering authentic long-range capability for polar and tropical passages alike. Fully refinished in 2025 and fastidiously cared for since launch, she marries proven British pedigree with poise and restraint, presenting her next custodian with a motor yacht of unwavering durability, quiet glamour, and enduring style. Hallmark elements set the tone from the outset: an English gentlemen’s club ambiance woven through seven guest cabins, a diesel-heated endless pool featuring an adjustable artificial current, a bow-forward dolphin-watching basket that brings the ocean’s theatre within arm’s reach, a 600-bottle wine cellar paired with an intimate cigar bar, and an expedition-grade galley complete with a walk-in refrigerator—each detail curated to enrich life on board during extended voyages.
Inside, M/Y STEEL reveals a refined balance of practicality and polish by Liebowitz & Partners, arranged for 12 guests across 7 cabins that include a serene full-beam master suite, two gracious VIPs, and four twin cabins thoughtfully fitted with additional bunk berths for flexible family or charter-style layouts. Up to 12 crew are accommodated in six comfortable cabins, ensuring professional service on every passage and swift readiness for ambitious itineraries. Seamless entertainment has been integrated throughout, with LG OLED displays, Yamaha amplification, and Apple TV 4K media hubs placed in all principal zones, from the main salon and private lounge to every guest stateroom, delivering cinematic clarity and effortless control for understated evenings at sea. Subtle speakeasy-inspired hideaways reveal themselves as you explore, offering intimate corners for conversation, a nightcap, or a moment of repose while the horizon slides by.
Designed as a true world-roaming explorer yacht, her outdoor areas invite both spirited adventure and refined relaxation. The heated counter-current pool invites daily training sessions or languid swims beneath an open sky, while forward, the observation basket provides a thrilling vantage point to witness dolphins dancing at the bow and wildlife encounters in pristine waters. The atmospheric wine cellar—housing up to 600 labels—adjoins a sophisticated cigar lounge, setting the stage for curated tastings and after-dinner rituals. In the galley, expedition-level specification ensures culinary excellence on extended passages, with robust appliances, abundant cold storage via a walk-in refrigerator, and a layout that empowers a professional chef to perform at the highest standard in any latitude.
Performance underscores her capability as an expedition superyacht. Twin CAT 3512B diesels deliver 2 x 1100 hp, providing an economical 10-knot cruising speed and an extraordinary range of approximately 10,000 nautical miles, ideal for transoceanic routes and remote anchorages. Comprehensive mechanical, navigation, and communication suites—including Quantum Zero Speed stabilizers—prioritize comfort and safety underway and at rest, so that long passages remain composed and quiet. Altogether, this Pendennis 55M stands as a rare union of ice-class strength, timeless interior refinement, and modern technology, equally at home as a private luxury motor yacht or a serious long-range explorer. M/Y STEEL is poised for her next chapter—prepared to carry her owner to the far side of the chart with confidence, grace, and unmistakable presence.
Detailed Description
Refit summary 2025
In 2025, she underwent a comprehensive refit featuring a full paint job that restores a flawless, uniform finish, the installation of a new 5G antenna to enhance connectivity and reliability offshore, and completely renewed exterior upholstery that elevates comfort and presents a fresh, contemporary aesthetic across all open-air spaces.
Mechanical equipment
Power comes from two CAT 3512B main engines working through ZF drive type with ZF 10150 gearboxes and ZF reduction gears, delivering two 1,100 hp (820 kW) units each. Engine hours stand at 10,148 on port and 10,155 on starboard as of 12.09.2025. Electrical generation is assured by three CAT C9 generators rated at 175 kW each, with recorded hours of 18,561 for the emergency unit, 26,784 for the port unit, and 28,288 for the starboard unit as of 12.09.2025. Thrust is translated by four Lips propellers, comprising two summer and two winter sets, while Ulstein Hinze Flap Rudder ICE Class 1A gear provides authority to a steering system by Konsberg with a rudder angle of 45. At rest and underway comfort is refined by four Quantum Fins Zero Speed stabilizers. Maneuvering is assisted by a Schottel bow thruster rated at 200 kW, with no stern thruster fitted.
The yacht’s electrical backbone is supported by Atlas Classic III shore power and matching Atlas Classic III converters, with no separate AC/DC power supply unit and no AC/DC universal power supply installed. The battery suite includes two 145 Ah batteries for each engine, two generator batteries (central/starboard), four emergency generator batteries, twenty-four service batteries rated at 224 Ah, four emergency batteries at 200 Ah, and two radio batteries at 110 Ah. Charging is managed by a Mastervolt MASS 24/50 for the engine and generator batteries, a Mastervolt MASS 24/30 for the emergency generator batteries, and two Mastervolt MASS 24/75 units dedicated to the service bank.
Hydraulics are comprehensively engineered with a central hydraulic power unit in the engine room by Koppen & Lethem, a forward HPU serving the jet ski crane, and a Tenfjord HPU lazarette unit for steering. The hydraulic systems drive the tender davits, side platforms, gangway, steering, and water cannons for pirate protection. Climate control is by Heinen & Hopman with maximum power of 315 kW, delivering 1.075.410 BTU via three compressors and an internal circuit with chilled water cooled by a refrigerant.
Freshwater autonomy is ensured by two HEM 40 Duplex watermakers producing a combined 34 m3/day, polished through five micron sediment filters and one charcoal filter, then safeguarded by an Aquafine LS HX Series UV sterilizer. Ozone sanitation serves both the black water tank and the grey water tank. The toilet system is Water Flush 1000, and blackwater processing is handled by a Hamann HL-CONT Electrolysis sewage treatment system. Bilge management includes a Bilge Boy separator rated at 2.5 gpm (0.57 m3/h), while fuel quality is maintained by a Mahle NFV Filter FTS 1200 fuel treatment system, an Alfa Laval fuel polishing system, and an Alfa Laval fuel purifier.
Navigation equipment
Commanding the bridge, a Cassens & Plath Bravo 170860 magnetic compass provides steadfast reference, complemented by two B&G H3000 digital compasses and two B&G H3000 wind instruments for razor‑sharp heading and breeze intelligence. Precision heading control is further assured by two Anschütz Standard 22 gyro compasses feeding an Anschütz 360/10 repeater, while situational awareness is elevated through a Furuno RCU-014 radar control unit. Confident track‑keeping comes courtesy of the Raytheon Marine NautoPilot 20X5, with depth and speed delivered by the Kelvin Hughes GDS101 echo/log system and close‑quarters clarity enhanced by the Kelvin Hughes NIS 2002 MkII AIS.
Positioning is anchored by two MX420 DGPS receivers, and voyage planning is streamlined on the Wartsila NaviPlanner 4000 chart plotter. Meteorological and safety data are comprehensively covered by the Furuno NX-700, serving as NAVTEX, weather fax, and weather station. Deck equipment
Command of the ground tackle is assured by twin MUIR VRC20000 vertical windlasses working in concert with twin MUIR VC18000 capstans, serving two Haren-Groningen TW fully balanced high holding power anchors at 855 kg. The rode comprises two anchor chains, each 275 m in length and 32 mm in diameter.
