Overview

Ellen, the final 40-metre Perini Navi of her class and the sole example configured with a four-guest-stateroom layout, has been meticulously cared for and elevated through major upgrades. In 2015 she underwent a comprehensive refit that introduced a new wardrobe of sails and fresh paint on the masts, superstructure, hull and bottom. At the same time, the bottom and internal tanks were sandblasted back to bare metal and fully recoated, and new teak decks were laid. All primary systems were renewed or thoroughly serviced, spanning hydraulics, winches, HVAC, refrigeration, navigation and communications, and A/V. The starboard gearbox received a complete overhaul—bearings, seals, oil and filters—while the port side was given regular scheduled service. The air-conditioning plant was replaced, charts and radios were inspected and updated, and all safety equipment was verified. A tasteful cosmetic refresh followed in 2020, keeping this Perini Navi sailing superyacht—an ocean-going luxury yacht, bluewater cruiser and charter-ready performance sailing yacht—presenting at an exceptional standard.

Detailed Description

Overview

Ellen is a 40 m / 131′3″ luxury sailing yacht built by Perini Navi in 2001, with a beam of 8 m and a draft of 6.46 m around a steadfast steel hull. Twin engines deliver a maximum speed of 13 knots and a composed cruising speed of 11 knots, while the sailing plan and balanced lines were conceived by Perini Navi. She welcomes 8 guests in 4 cabins and blends authority under sail with quiet confidence under power. Ellen’s interior layout sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 rooms, comprising a master suite, one VIP stateroom and two twin cabins, and she carries up to 6 crew to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Timeless styling, beautiful furnishings and sumptuous seating throughout create an elegant, comfortable atmosphere.

Main characteristics

Built by Perini Navi and delivered in May 2001, this yacht carries the design signature of Perini Navi. Her L.O.A. measures 40.4 m / 132′ with a L.W.L. of 31.72 m / 104′, a beam of 8.0 m / 26′2″, and a variable draft of 6.37 m / 22′ with the centerboard down (approx) and 3.44 m / 11′28″ with the centerboard up (approx). Displacement is 75 tons at full load (approx), with 30 tons of keel lead ballast, and an expansive sail area of approx 812 m sq. Classification meets the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Malta Cross A1 & Yachting service AMS, and MCA standards.

Capacities

Range-ready tankage underpins autonomous cruising: fuel capacity of 25,000 litres, fresh water capacity of 8,600 litres, lubricating oil of 890 litres, grey water of 1,745 litres, black water of 1,745 litres, sludge of 1,195 litres, and bilge water of 1,195 litres. Freshwater independence is enhanced by two Idromar Mini compact Junior 2J watermakers producing 3,100 litres per day each.

Machinery

Power is delivered by two 496 hp MTU 8V 183 TE 62 engines (overhauled 2016), rated 365 kW @ 2100 rpm, 8 V90, with recorded hours of Port ME: 9,622 H and Start ME: 9,644 H. A 60 Kva shore power connection enables use of 380 V 50 Hz voltage, while climate control comes via a Condaria air-conditioning system with fan coils in each area and treated fresh air. Propulsion is refined through a Hundested CPG 32 reverse/reduction gearbox with a 3.44:1 reduction ratio, driving two shafts with two four-blade feathering propellers. Electrical generation is ensured by two Northern Lights M-668T units, 66 kW 380 V 50 Hz, plus one Northern Lights 35 kW 380 V 50 Hz for emergency use, all overhauled in 2016, with generator hours noted as Port Gen: 28,344 and Start Gen: 28,316. The electrical ecosystem comprises 380 V 50 Hz three-phase and 220 V 50 Hz single-phase systems, complemented by 24 V DC for emergency lighting, limited energy circuits, signaling circuits, the RTF station, electronic instruments and alarms.

Other machinery

Close-quarters control is assured by a Schottel STT-010 LK bowthruster rated at approx 37 kW. Fuel polishing and purity are maintained by a 380 V AC Alfa Laval manual MAB 103 B24 centrifugal fuel separator processing approx 900 litres per hour.

Galley and laundry equipment

The galley is equipped to professional standard with one Miele convection microwave, two twin-coil Gaggenau hotplates, one Gaggenau oven, one Gaggenau griddle, one Miele dishwasher 67856, and one Hoshizaki ice maker—everything required to plate refined cuisine underway or at anchor. Laundry is handled with two Miele washing machines WS5425, two Miele dryers TS5205C, and a Miele roller iron B865E, ensuring crisp linens and impeccable presentation throughout.

Navigation equipment

Navigation is centered on precise heading and situational awareness: one C. Plath JUPITER magnetic compass (dia. 180 mm) pairs with a C. Plath NAVIGAT X MK1 gyrocompass, complemented by an electronic compass, three portable VHFs, and a dedicated computer running Tsunamis 99 electronic chart software. Course-keeping is entrusted to a C. Plath NAVIPILOT V/GM autopilot with rudder angle feedback and heading inputs from both the gyro and electronic compass, with master and repeater display and control units for confident redundancy. The wheelhouse console integrates Plath control featuring a C. Plath NAVIGAT X gyrocompass console steering repeater, the C. Plath NAVIPLOT V/GM autopilot control and display unit (Master), a tiller with double NFU Naviguide NN/EF, a three‑mode steering gear interface selector (Auto / Manual / NFU), an override/take‑over button, and an analogue rudder angle indicator. On the flying bridge, helmsmen benefit from analogue boat speed and wind speed indicators, an analogue magnified wind indicator, an analogue depth gauge, and two FFD’s. Aft, boarding and water access are eased by a hydraulically operated aft gangway and a hydraulically operated side boarding ladder.

Entertainment equipment

Entertainment flows seamlessly throughout the yacht. A broadcast and closed‑circuit TV system pairs with a hi‑fi installation in the main saloon and dining saloon, with aft cockpit speakers, and independent hi‑fi systems serving the Owner’s cabin, guest cabins, crew cabins and crew mess. Tenders

The yacht’s versatility is amplified by one 5.6 m tender with diesel (2016) and one 3.4 m Novourania tender with a 15 HP outboard, ensuring swift ship‑to‑shore transfers and effortless waterside adventures.

Deck equipment

Deck handling is efficient and seamanlike, led by one hydraulic stern gangway and a comprehensive Perini Navi sail‑handling suite: eight Perini Navi captive winches, two Perini Navi drum winches and six Antal winches, supported by one tender launching pole with electric winch and one anchor windlass to anchor with poise and precision.

Rig and sail

SAILS — Spectra sails by North, new in 2016, are monitored via a Perini Navi sail monitoring system. The inventory includes a genoa of approx 274 m sq, a fisherman of 145 m sq, a staysail of 100 m sq, a mizzen sail of 111 m sq, a mainsail of approx 182 m sq, and an MPS to broaden the performance envelope. RIG — Two Perini Navi masts in light alloy were fully painted in 2016, with elliptical sections, reinforcements and internal lead ways; all stainless standing and running rigging was replaced in 2016. The main mast carries four pairs of spreaders and one double jumper, while the mizzen mast carries three pairs of spreaders and two single jumpers. Genoa, Main, Mizzen, Fisherman and Staysail are equipped with Perini Navi electric furling systems, overhauled and restored to like‑new condition in 2016. Two aluminium alloy booms, approx 11.6 m and 9.9 m, each with a topping‑lift and electric auxiliary winch, have their sheets controlled by automatic winches from the wheelhouse and flybridge; mast wiring was replaced in 2016.

Safety and security

Onboard safety is comprehensive: a CO₂ fire‑fighting system protects the engine room, supplemented by portable fire extinguishers in accordance with classification society requirements. Life‑saving appliances include three eight‑man inflatable liferafts, sixteen type‑tested life jackets, two life rings with luminous buoys and smoke signals, two additional life rings with attached lines, one set of signal rockets and distress flares, and four line‑throwing rockets. A full B.A. kit for fire‑fighting supports the crew in any emergency.
