Overview

Summer School is a striking freshwater example of the iconic Pursuit 3400 Express—an elegant express cruiser/sportfishing powerboat. Sold new on Lake Michigan and maintained exclusively in freshwater. Summer School has been kept indoors in heated storage, preserving its superb condition for offshore cruising as a comfortable cabin cruiser.

Detailed Description

Overview

Fully equipped for comfort, confidence, and offshore authority, this Pursuit 3400 Express—Summer School—has been meticulously maintained and is turnkey, with generator, air/heat, and a comprehensive, modernized electronics suite. Purpose-built as a bluewater fishing powerhouse with the refined amenities serious anglers expect from PURSUIT, it rides on a modified deep‑V entry and spans a broad 12' 9" beam for outstanding stability, precise handling, and a smooth, dry run. Twin Cummins diesel inboards deliver a 28‑knot cruise and a 32‑knot top end, pairing range and reliability with easy service access via the hydraulic engine hatch lift. Currently lying at ReefPoint Marina in Racine, Summer School is available for in‑person showings and virtual tours; with the owner’s new boat due at month’s end, she’s primed and ready for her next custodian.

The layout maximizes volume and flow. That expansive 12' 9" beam yields a remarkably roomy cockpit and inviting accommodations below. The helm deck centers the skipper with a tilt‑away, gray centerline helm and a pedestal helm chair, while an L‑shaped lounge faces a double‑wide helm seat for sociable passage-making. The profile is purposeful and striking, with a tall, aluminum‑framed windshield (complete with wipers and washers) and an electrically opening center pane for ventilation, wide side decks, and full helm‑area enclosure. A transom fishbox, in‑floor fishboxes, tackle locker, and a live bait well speak to its sporting intent.

Thoughtful updates underscore diligent care. Power is by Cummins 370B diesels with fresh full engine and cooler service and injectors; the starboard engine received a full engine‑out overhaul at 2,175 hours with new coolers and turbo, and has fifty hours since rebuild, with complete documentation and all service records on file. Electronics include a RayMarine Axiom Pro MFD with fishfinder and radar overlay feeding a Ray Marine Quantum 2 digital radar dome, RayMarine autopilot, an Icom M504 VHF plus a Raymarine standby VHF mounted in the console with dual 8' VHF antennas, and a helm‑mounted FishHawk X4. Pleasure Lok electronic trolling valves are helm‑controlled for precise slow‑trolling. Electrical care items include a new ProMariner battery charger and five new Interstate batteries. Protection and comfort enhancements comprise a full enclosure with custom aft canopy and custom aft cockpit SeaDek.

Model pedigree matters. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the largest boat Pursuit had built to that point, the 3400 Express was produced at the Tiara factory in Holland, MI (both Tiara and Pursuit are part of S‑2 Yachts) for eight years through 2004. The hull design remained consistent throughout, while the deck layout evolved thoughtfully over the run. Construction is to the highest hand‑laid standards, employing premium polyester and vinylester resins with E‑glass knitted fiberglass cloth. The hull is solid fiberglass below the waterline and Baltek balsa‑cored above, with synthetic foam stringers encapsulated in fiberglass and set while the hull is still in‑mold. Deck layup mirrors the hull’s methodology, using balsa coring to stiffen walking areas.

Step inside on centerline and descend three steps to a warm teak interior with Pursuit’s hallmark fit and finish. A head sits aft to port, the galley is forward, and the starboard dinette with teak hi‑lo table converts to a double berth. In the bow, an island queen berth offers generous storage. The salon highlights include a flat‑panel TV mount on a swivel and an additional flat‑panel TV forward to port. The salon further features a solid teak and maple sole, a settee upholstered in tan Ultra leather with blue accent, a hanging locker, courtesy lighting, AC/DC electric panel, Marine Air 12k BTU reverse‑cycle air conditioning, a Sony AM/FM/cassette stereo with two stereo speakers, 12v lighting with two 12v reading lights, 110v outlets, two opening ports, a sole access hatch to the bilge, storage under the steps to the helm deck, a smoke detector, a CO2 detector, a teak handrail, and a vinyl headliner.

Mechanical systems are robust and accessible. Twin 5.9 Cummins 370B diesel engines show port 1,868 hours and starboard 50 hours; Pleasure Lok electronic trolling valves; an oil exchange system serving both engines and the genset; a Westerbeke 5 kW diesel generator with 269 hours; Racor fuel/water separators for engines and generator; a 12k BTU Marine Air reverse‑cycle air conditioning system; new freshwater pumps with accumulator tank; fuel selector and on/off valves; hydraulic steering; a bonding system with transom and shaft zincs; dual electric engine hatch lifters; bronze thru‑hulls and ball valves; a battery parallel switch; Morse stainless‑steel shifter and throttles; a six‑gallon water heater with heat exchanger; a Glenndinning engine synchronizer; PSS dripless shaft seals; recessed Bennett trim tabs; seawater strainers for engines, generator, and air conditioning; 12v engine‑room lighting; a 110v engine‑room outlet; and a Fire Boy automatic fire‑extinguishing system in the engine room. Running gear includes bronze axe‑head rudders and struts, Nibral propellers, Aquamet 22 1 1/2" stainless‑steel shafts, two 1,500 GPH manual/automatic bilge pumps, and two bilge blowers.

The helm deck and navigation suite put information and control at your fingertips. A Raymarine Axiom Pro chartplotter with fishfinder and radar overlay works with the Ray Marine Quantum 2 digital radar dome; a flush‑mount Richie compass augments the nav suite; there is full navigational lighting, a chart flat with Plexiglas cover, and a RayMarine autopilot. Communications are redundant through a RayMarine VHF with DSC and 8' antenna and an ICOM M504 VHF with DSC and 8' antenna. Fishing instrumentation includes a helm‑mounted FishHawk X4 and helm‑mounted electronic Pleasure Lok trolling‑valve controls. Night operations benefit from a Guest Spot Light with helm control and aft‑facing cockpit spreader lights. The helm itself features a tilt‑away gray centerline helm, VDO engine gages (tachometer, oil pressure, volts, temperature, transmission pressure, fuel, hours, rudder angle), windlass control, L‑shaped port seating with storage lockers beneath, pedestal helm chair, 12v and 12v courtesy lighting, aft‑facing seats, tackle drawers, a footrest at the helm, a fire extinguisher, an aluminum‑framed windshield with wipers and washers, an electrically opening center window for ventilation, a full helm‑area enclosure, an Edson 16" cast aluminum steering wheel, audible engine alarms, an overhead electronics box, overhead rod storage for six rods, a 12v outlet, a Richie compass, an electrically lifting helm deck for engine access, an engine‑room day hatch, and a stainless‑steel handhold.

Electrical systems are equally comprehensive. AC service is via dual 110v 30‑amp shore power with two 50' power cords; DC service is 12v with five new Group 31 batteries. Distribution is through a custom Pursuit AC/DC main panel with volt and amp meters. Generation is by a Westerbeke diesel generator with 269 hours. Battery management is simplified by a custom Pursuit battery switch panel beneath the cabin steps and a new ProMariner 40‑amp battery charger.

On deck, wide side and foredecks are easily negotiated, reached via two molded‑in steps in the cockpit to port and starboard, and protected by a handrail that wraps the entire foredeck. Traction comes from diamond‑pattern non‑skid throughout. Ground tackle is handled on a molded‑in bow pulpit with stainless‑steel bow roller and a Maxwell windlass gypsy and capstan with foot switches and remote operation, attached to a Delta anchor with chain and rode. There is an anchor cleat and anchor locker, two 10" stainless‑steel bow cleats and two 10" stainless‑steel spring cleats, a remote‑controlled Guest spot light, windshield handrails, and a 1 1/4" welded stainless‑steel bow rail.

The cockpit is tournament‑ready and family‑friendly. To port, a bait‑prep center integrates a sink, livewell, fresh and salt water faucets, an ice box, and tackle trays. Fish storage is via a large pull‑out in‑sole insulated fishbox with macerator and a small pull‑out in‑sole insulated fishbox with macerator. Drainage is secured by large port and starboard transom scuppers with covers. Hardware includes two chromed bronze hawser pipes, two stainless‑steel 10" cleats, and two stainless‑steel 5" fender cleats. Comfort features include cockpit bolsters and diamond‑pattern non‑skid on the Pursuit swim platform with ladder. Angling assets comprise a starboard‑side 40‑gallon live well with light, a transom door with tuna gate, five Lee rod holders, Rupp gunwale‑mounted 15' outriggers (removable), and a six‑rod rocket launcher. Dockside connectivity includes two 110v 30‑amp inlets, a dockside pressure‑water inlet, downrigger outlets, two 12v flood lights, plus both raw‑water and fresh‑water washdowns.

The galley is simple, efficient, and exactly what this platform calls for: a Corian counter with sink and stove covers, a molded‑in white Corian sink with chromed‑brass faucet, a Kenyon single‑burner stove, a six‑gallon water heater, and a Norcold AC/DC refrigerator. Conveniences include a phone outlet, teak trim, microwave, two 12v halogen lights, storage beneath the sink, a small storage shelf, a small storage cabinet over the microwave, and four 110v outlets.

The forward berth area provides an island marine queen with storage beneath, hanging and storage lockers, and a privacy curtain. Ventilation and light come from one overhead hatch with screen and shade, 12v lighting and two 12v reading lights, a vinyl headliner, and one opening port, complemented by a mirrored forward bulkhead with storage cabinets. Safety includes a smoke detector and a CO2 detector, and there are 110v outlets.

In the head, the Vac U Flush system pairs with a molded‑in fiberglass vanity featuring a stainless‑steel sink, blue Corian countertop, and storage beneath. The shower includes a curtain, teak sole grate, and molded‑in bench seat, while a mirrored forward bulkhead, two stainless‑steel towel bars/handholds, a full fiberglass liner, and a drop‑down teak grate seat/cover over the head elevate both function and finish. Stowage is provided by a medicine cabinet with mirrored doors and two storage shelves. Illumination and power come via two 12v halogen lights and one 110v outlet, and drainage is managed by a shower sump pump, with one opening port for ventilation.

Safety gear aboard includes six life jackets, one throw cushion, flares, and an electric horn. Note: the seller’s personal belongings are excluded from the sale of the vessel. The owner is open to a separate purchase of rod‑mounted downriggers and additional fishing gear.
