Overview

SOMERSET, Contract No. 442, ranks among the last and most coveted Trumpy yachts ever completed. Commissioned by textile heir Gerrish Milliken, Jr. and christened SPINDLE, she later assumed the name SOMERSET—a title proudly retained into her third and present stewardship. In 2012–2013 she received a comprehensive, keel-up restoration that united contemporary reliability with the timeless Trumpy aesthetic. The refit brought a new bottom, renewed keel frames and floors, fully rebuilt main engines, new generators, tanks, plumbing, wiring, and electrical systems, along with a completely refreshed interior, new wall coverings, and a flawless paint finish. This classic motor yacht embodies the craftsmanship, poise, and distinction synonymous with the Trumpy legacy. Fastidiously maintained and genuinely turn-key, this luxury wooden gentleman’s yacht presents with no known deficiencies and is ready for immediate cruising—a heritage yacht and collector-grade classic motor yacht for the discerning connoisseur.

Detailed Description

Overview

Somerset, Contract #442, stands as the sixth-to-last Trumpy ever built—a distinguished pedigree that resonates through her graceful sheer and timeless profile. Commissioned by Mr. Gerrish Milliken, Jr. of the textile world, she was launched as SPINDLE before adopting the name SOMERSET under her second owner, which her third owner proudly retained. From 2012 through 2013 she underwent a comprehensive keel-up rebuild that honored her heritage while renewing her for decades to come: a new bottom with fresh keel frames and floors, fully rebuilt main engines, new generators, new tanks and plumbing, and an entirely re-wired electrical architecture. Her interior was renewed as well, with fresh wall coverings and paint, rendering a warm, well-patinated butternut ambiance that feels both authentic and indulgent. Today she is the quintessential turnkey classic—two generous staterooms plus crew in a semi-displacement package—ready to go with no known deficiencies, representing the quality and style synonymous with the Trumpy name, enhanced by a recent mechanical refresh that makes getting underway as effortless as stepping aboard.

Accommodations

SOMERSET embraces the quintessential Trumpy flush-deck layout designed for gracious living at sea. Crew accommodations lie forward, followed by a practical galley to port opposite a welcoming dinette to starboard. Aft, the saloon unfolds in beautifully warm, well-patinated butternut, arranged with a sofa to starboard, a centerline loveseat, and an easy chair to port, comfortably seating six with effortless conversation flow. Twin aft companionways provide intuitive circulation: one leading down to the two guest cabins and the other up to the wheelhouse, as well as out to the expansive, enclosed aft deck measuring 120 square feet. She sleeps four in the owner’s party and two in crew, delivering a balanced blend of privacy, comfort, and classic elegance.

Saloon

The saloon is a showcase of butternut craftsmanship, its rich luster framing the panoramic sweep of large windows—two of which crank down to invite a soft cross-breeze. Forward to starboard, a coffee and breakfast bar creates a convivial nook, while to port an entertainment center conceals a 40-inch Samsung TV on a lift paired with a Bose sound system for cinema-quality evenings afloat. A sofa, centerline loveseat, and easy chair with ottoman compose a refined seating ensemble atop a carpeted sole dressed in wool with a padded underlay. Subtle LED overhead lighting sets the tone, and the DC/AC electrical panel disappears behind bespoke cabinetry, preserving the room’s serene, uncluttered character.

Guest stateroom

The guest stateroom welcomes with a full-size berth flanked by bench seating outboard and served by two focused reading lamps. Natural light and fresh air flow through two opening ports, while a generous cedar-lined hanging locker and additional appointments—including a mirror and soft, satin-finished white painted and wallpapered surfaces—create a calm, refined retreat. A wool carpet with padded underlay underfoot adds a plush touch of quiet luxury.

Guest head/dayhead

Thoughtfully positioned to serve both cabin and passage use, the guest head/dayhead features a tile-lined stall shower with a seat, an opening port for ventilation, and a Tecma head for reliable, modern operation. A porcelain wash basin is set into a beautifully varnished mahogany counter with a tiled backsplash, marrying practical durability with classic yacht joinery.

Master stateroom

The master stateroom centers on a true centerline queen berth, encircled by abundant storage in lockers and drawers, with a large cedar-lined hanging locker to keep wardrobes fresh. Four opening portlights enliven the space with sea air and light, while bench seating outboard invites unhurried moments. Two dedicated reading lamps and a wool carpet with padded underlay complete a suite that balances timeless character with daily comfort.

Master head

The private master head continues the theme of understated luxury with a tile-lined stall shower, a Tecma head, and a porcelain wash basin set into a marble countertop. An opening port brings in natural ventilation, and generous dedicated storage keeps toiletries and towels neatly organized.

Galley

Designed for efficient, gourmet preparation, the galley is fitted with a stainless-steel countertop and integrated sink, a Miele four-burner glass cooktop, and a 2024 Miele convection oven beneath a Boran stainless overhead hood. Cold storage is assured by Vitrifrigo refrigerator and freezer units, while four opening ports deliver welcome airflow. Opposite, a four-person settee converts to an additional berth if desired, and a three-step companionway rises to the saloon beside custom overhead glass skylights that bathe the space in soft, natural light.

Crew

Forward, the crew area is purpose-built for comfort and efficiency, with over-under bunks to port, a stall shower to starboard, and a head fitted with a Tecma toilet. Two hanging lockers, generous drawer storage, and a small vanity with mirror ensure a tidy, functional workspace and restful retreat for professional operation.

Hull and deck equipment

Her structure reflects a meticulous renewal of pedigree materials and methods: a double-planked sipo hull over oak frames and floor timbers, all new in 2013/2014, paired with an Angelique structural keel, backbone, and deadwood also new in 2013/2014. Bronze fastenings, likewise renewed then and pulled/surveyed in 2023 with no deterioration, confirm enduring integrity. The deck is a glassed-over wood construction trimmed in varnished teak, while the hull wears a refined greystone finish accented by a blue boot. In October 2025 the bottom received a full service with the stem re-caulked and Propspeed applied. Fuel is carried in two aluminum 590-gallon tanks, complemented by a 270-gallon poly water tank and a 25-gallon poly black water tank. The enclosed aft deck is freshly protected by a new 2025 isinglass surround, and ground tackle is handled by an Ideal windlass with a plow anchor and all-chain rode, fully serviced in 2024. A tender davit winch was replaced in 2023 to handle the AB aluminum-hull tender, model 8UL, powered by a Torqeedo engine with two spare batteries, also from 2023. Practical deck amenities include a freshwater washdown on the foredeck, an aft deck dining table with seating for eight, and an inviting wet bar with an Isotherm ice maker, Vitrifrigo fridge, and beverage center. Safety equipment is complete with twelve adult life jackets, four child life jackets, two throwable life rings, and a life raft.

Electronics and navigation

The wheelhouse blends heritage and modernity, where original TAG Heuer Speed & Time clocks—delightfully original to SOMERSET—share pride of place with contemporary systems. Navigation and awareness are assured by a B&G depthsounder, a Simrad NSE12 GPS chartplotter, a Simrad AP24 autopilot, a Furuno radar, and a Ritchie compass. Entertainment and comms are handled by a Poly Planer MRD 60 Bluetooth CD stereo, complemented by Icom M424Q and Standard Horizon GX300S VHF radios. Smooth and precise maneuvering comes via Micro-Commander ZF engine controls.

Performance

SOMERSET delivers the satisfying urgency of semi-displacement performance with the poise of a true classic. Expect approximately 9 knots at 1500 rpm burning about 20 gph, around 16 knots at 2400 rpm at roughly 50 gph, and a spirited 19 knots at approximately 2750 rpm at wide-open throttle (WOT)—a versatile envelope that makes passage-making efficient and arrival assured.

Broker remarks

SOMERSET is a rare opportunity on today’s brokerage market, distinguished by provenance and by the quality of her stewardship. Her current owner has been closely involved since the 2013–2014 refit, personally overseeing maintenance, crewing, and operations to a remarkably consistent standard. Structurally sound, mechanically refreshed, and cosmetically refined, she stands genuinely ready to cruise immediately—with updated systems and a level of care that promises a seamless handover into her next chapter.

Machinery and electrical

Power comes from twin Cummins 6CTA 8.3L 434 hp diesels installed new in 1996, both rebuilt at 1500 hours and currently showing approximately 3,150 hours to port and 3,132 hours to starboard as of 11/25/2025. They turn through Twin Disk 507 reduction gears with a 1.98:1 ratio, supported by two spare aftercoolers that are prudently swapped and rebuilt every two years. Ship’s power is underwritten by dual Cummins Onan 20 kW generators with about 2,943 hours to port and 3,070 hours to starboard as of 11/2025. Comfort and control underway are enhanced by Wesmar CPS1000 hydraulic stabilizers, dropped and serviced in 2023, and a Lectrotab trim-tab system. In 2023 the running gear—including cutlass bearings and PSS shaft seals—was pulled, serviced, and replaced as needed. The engine room is brightly lit by LED fixtures and kept dry by an Arid bilge system, Series 4 (2024). Hotel services are equally robust: a Headhunter Tidalwave Type 1 MSD whole-boat treatment system processes up to 50 gallons per day, while a watermaker produces 1400 gallons per day. The entire electrical system has been replaced to meet ABYC and NEC standards, providing 12/24/240 V distribution. Shore connectivity includes two 50 Amp connections on both port and starboard sides, with one dedicated 50 Amp cord for house loads and a second 50 Amp cord dedicated to HVAC demand. Lighting throughout is via Imtra 12-volt LEDs, and the 24 V house bank comprises eight Lifeline AGM 6-volt batteries, managed by Victron Centaur 12 V/20 A chargers for both engine and house banks. Safety systems include a Fireboy engine room suppression system with alarm and current tag, along with various fire extinguishers all carrying current tags. Climate control is by Marine Air air-conditioning, with all raw-water lines replumbed in 2024; four air-conditioning units serve the yacht, two chiller-fed and two self-contained. For extended stays aboard, a Miele Touchtronic washer and dryer, dual Isotherm hot water heaters in the lazarette, and four Johnson 24 V bilge pumps with four-zone high-water alarms and counters round out a machinery suite designed for reliability and easy ownership.
