Detailed Description

Accommodations

Rosa is one of the very few explorer yachts of this size to place a vast master stateroom directly behind the wheelhouse with its own private, fully covered deck while keeping all guest cabins on the main deck. She has safely carried her five owners and their families over 50,000 ocean miles on her own hull, from the Mediterranean to New Zealand and back to the West Coast, and she delivers a range of over 5,000 miles at an exceptionally economical fuel burn of 16 gallons per hour at 9 knots. Purpose-built in all aluminum with tremendous volume and an expansive, modern bridge affording a sweeping 270-degree view, Rosa is equipped for serious adventure cruising and water play, from a dive compressor with racks for 10 tanks to multiple kayaks, and she is set up to fish with the best. With over 2,000 gallons of daily fresh water-making capability and environmentally friendly sewage treatment, she is as efficient and seaworthy as any vessel in her class. Built to expedition standards by ABD of Vancouver, Canada, Rosa is ruggedly constructed, handsome, and conceived to carry her owner and guests anywhere in the world in safety and comfort. Her owner’s deep respect for preventative maintenance has kept her superbly maintained and thoughtfully equipped, presenting a rare opportunity for those who dream of venturing beyond the norm. Rosa’s accommodations plan is typically seen only on much larger vessels. The upper deck master suite, directly aft of the wheelhouse, is connected to a completely private, fully covered deck and comprises four elements: a large main cabin with 11 oversized windows creating a 270-degree panorama from the centerline king bed, with blinds on each window controlled via remote; his-and-hers heads, one with Jacuzzi hydromassage and the other with shower towers; a separate office area; and a vast private deck under full cover. The “hers” master tub/shower features outside access directly into the shower. Another hallmark of Rosa’s unique layout is that the guest accommodations are located on the main deck rather than below: two very large guest cabins, each with en suite head and shower, one featuring a generous settee that converts to a single berth and the other with a centerline king bed, allowing Rosa to sleep 7 guests. Forward on the main deck, the crew quarters reflect a true mega yacht sensibility, with a complete galley and lounge area and two crew cabins for a total of 4 crew; historically, she has been run with two or three crew. The entire lower deck is devoted to the engine room, service spaces, and a dedicated dive/fishing area—another hallmark normally reserved for much larger explorer yachts.

Main deck

At the stern, a four-foot integrated swim platform with watertight hatches opens to generous storage compartments. In 2014 a pantograph Freeman door was added to connect the swim platform directly to the expansive lazarette and dive/fishing center, with continuous access into the extensive engine room and service areas. Five underwater lights bathe the water around the stern in a dramatic evening glow.

Dual stairs sweep up to the aft deck, where a gas barbecue, refrigerator, and a large, deeply cushioned settee frame a mahogany table perfect for alfresco dinners for six or more. A single centerline power capstan simplifies mooring and towing. Through double doors, the main salon welcomes you with a large sectional sofa, two overstuffed occasional chairs, a dining table, a full stand-behind wet bar, and an entertainment center, all flooded with natural light from oversized windows. In 2014 Brazilian jatoba hardwood floors were installed along with an extensive sound attenuation system, creating an inviting ambiance and a remarkably quiet lounge.

Forward to port lies the large, fully equipped modern galley, with generous storage including a pantry and a full side-by-side refrigerator; opposite, a breakfast settee seats four. True to her explorer pedigree, Rosa features a fully enclosed laundry room with two washers, two dryers, a deep stainless-steel laundry sink, a wet storage locker, and a folding area with cabinet storage, plus a convenient side deck door. Proceeding forward along the central passageway, the guest staterooms unfold: to port, a queen berth with settee; to starboard, a walk-around king. Both offer en suite head and shower, flat-screen TV, and stereo. All the way forward, the crew area presents port and starboard double cabins in the bow with stacked single bunks and a shared centerline head and shower, together with a lounge featuring a dinette, galley area, and an entertainment center with complete audio-visual and satellite TV system; crew TV/video displays can also show bridge and navigation data.

Lower deck

A centerline watertight door between the galley and laundry opens to the machinery spaces below. This level, divided by five watertight bulkheads, is fully dedicated to engineering, service, and stowage. Aft, the large lazarette houses the steering systems, two large stainless-steel fresh water tanks, two chest freezers, and a full-size refrigerator, with excellent cabinet stowage for fishing tackle, overhead storage for rods and spearguns, plus a dive compressor and 16 single scuba tanks. In 2014 a new 38 kW Northern Lights generator was installed, enclosed in a sound shield with additional mounts to eliminate vibration, water-cooled with water-wash exhaust; together with the other new generator, it is so quiet that one can converse standing beside it.

Forward through a watertight door lies the spacious engine room with full standing headroom and generous walkaround clearance at the main engines and both generators. In 2014/15, extensive upgrades elevated the space to the highest standards: the main engines and generators were remounted and the exhaust system re-engineered to further reduce already low vibration and sound levels. One main generator was replaced with a new Northern Lights 55 kW in a sound shield, the other was comprehensively checked and serviced. Rosa now carries three generators in total, two brand new, each capable of supporting all ship’s electrical systems, with two also able to drive the hydraulics. A new firefighting system was installed and all equipment inspected, serviced, or upgraded as needed over the past two years.

Next through another watertight door is the air-conditioned workshop with chest tool storage, port and starboard workbenches, and cabinet stowage for spares. Forward again, a large pump room doubles as an excellent storage area and houses additional workshop power tools including a drill press, grinder, and metal lathe. In 2015 the entire air-conditioning compressor system was replaced: Rosa features a Marine Air system with three compressors providing robust redundancy—only one compressor is sufficient to cool the entire yacht—and all pumps and associated components have been serviced or replaced. Two independent Seakeeper gyro stabilizer systems were installed, each fully capable of stabilizing the yacht underway and at anchor; in extraordinary seas both systems can be brought online. As a triple backup, the original fin Naiad system, rebuilt in 2012, remains in service. The forward “crash bulkhead” separates the pump room from the bow chain locker. All below-deck compartments are air-conditioned except the engine room and lazarette.

Upper deck

The enclosed wheelhouse is generously proportioned and exudes a big-ship presence. Three evenly spaced leather pilot chairs (2014) face a fully appointed helm with an updated electronics suite and comprehensive system integration enabling operation and monitoring via iPhone/iPad, the Internet, and satellite links. Along the aft bulkhead, a large, elevated leather settee (2014) and a table for six command a remarkable 270-degree view. Port and starboard wheelhouse doors open to full control wing stations on the side decks, with a fourth control station on the aft owner’s deck. Forward, the foredeck features a large sun pad lounge, heavy-duty dual anchoring capstans set into a large stainless self-draining tray, and a ship’s bell with engraved name.

Aft of the wheelhouse, the entire upper deck is devoted to the master stateroom suite, including a study with a full desk and computer workstation. The master, in both location and size, rivals arrangements on yachts far larger than Rosa. The suite centers on a king-size berth with extensive drawer space and is complemented by two large master heads (2014): one with Jacuzzi tub/shower, outside access and a vanity, with an outdoor shower at its entrance; and a second with a vanity, stall shower, and enclosed toilet. A private desk/office area just aft of the first head could be converted into a full-size walk-in closet, while another workstation sits within the main master cabin; the breadth of the bridge area and views make this an ideal work environment. Centerline double doors lead aft to the owner’s spacious, fully covered private deck furnished with table, chairs, and a bar with icemaker and two-drawer refrigerator; aft on this deck, a centerline helm delivers engine and steering controls.

Top deck

Just aft of the wheelhouse to port, an internal stairway rises to the flybridge and boat deck, which can also be reached via a ladder from the owner’s private deck. The flybridge is crowned by a custom hardtop shading three pilot seats and a helm station. Aft of the dashboard to starboard, a built-in L-shaped settee with a mahogany cocktail table seats six, served by an icemaker and a teak cooler. The boat deck carries a new 5,000-pound crane (2014) to service the expansive stowage area; in 2014 the deck was extended to accommodate a 24' tender, plus a crew tender and an array of water toys.

Computer, audio & visual eqiupment

Most audio-visual systems have been upgraded or replaced in recent years. At the core sits a latest-generation 5 ft. Seatel 5009-33 Linear Ku VSAT dome, a $150k installation completed in 2014, bringing high-speed Internet and global telephone service. A remotely PTZ-controlled 13-camera system (installed in 2014) provides real-time views of all principal areas of the yacht and her surroundings from anywhere in the world, including via iPhone and iPad. Six TVs with DVD players include a 52" SAMSUNG 4k, 3D LCD (2015 model) in the salon. Every guest area and cabin has satellite TV and a connection to the PBX telephone system, while a wireless network blankets the yacht and links to the computer server, printer, scanner, and fax. TRAC Vision SatTV G-6 and TRAC Vision KVH sat phone/fax/Internet provide primary service and redundancy. High-end speakers deliver rich sound inside and out in all areas except the foredeck.

Galley & laundry equipment

The galley is fitted with a GE Monogram stainless-steel side-by-side refrigerator, a GE Monogram 30" oven, a GE Monogram micro/convection hood-mount microwave oven, and a GE 36" glass induction cooktop, complemented by a KitchenAid stainless-steel trash compactor, a KitchenAid double-drawer dishwasher, and a double stainless-steel sink. The dedicated laundry presents Bosch stacked two washers and two dryers (2014). Below deck, provisioning is effortless with two chest freezers and one additional refrigerator. Icemakers serve the wet bar in the salon and every deck, with a refrigerator and icemaker also on the Owner’s Deck.

Deck & hull

Five underwater lights illuminate the sea around the stern. Port and starboard wing stations provide confident close-quarters control. Ground tackle comprises two 420 lbs Danforth-style anchors with two 500' 5/8" chain rodes, handled by two Lewmar hydraulic 4,000 lbs forward anchor windlasses (rebuilt 2014) and a single Lewmar electric 3,000 lbs aft anchor capstan. A telescopic Steelhead model 5000 dinghy davit with 5,000 lb capacity (installed in 2014) services the boat deck. The tender fleet includes a 14’ Wide Body Zodiac Open Pro 420 crew dinghy with 50 hp Yamaha (with VHF and plotter/fish finder). Night operations benefit from two Carl & Finch remote searchlights and one deck floodlight. Anglers will appreciate dual downriggers and dual outriggers. Safety equipment includes two DBC 8-person life rafts with hydrostatic release (new 2014). Practical touches abound: pressure-wash outlets on each deck, a removable swim ladder, and built-in port and starboard swim ladders at the stern. A carbon-fiber passerelle (2014) completes the package, while dock and mooring lines are plentiful in nylon across sizes and lengths.

Electronics

A new NMEA2000 system (2014) delivers comprehensive navigational data and full engine diagnostics to two 24" LED computer screens in the wheelhouse and can be accessed remotely from smartphones and tablets throughout the yacht, as well as via the Internet from any location. An Echopilot FLS-3D forward-looking sonar with 3D display (a $100k installation completed in 2014) peers ahead beneath the surface. Core navigation includes a ComNav autopilot with remote, an Anschuetze gyro compass with repeaters (serviced 2014), and an 8" binnacle magnetic compass. Two Furuno black-box systems feed three screens at the wheelhouse and one at the flybridge, complemented by a Furuno NavNet chart plotter and a Northstar 952xw color WAAS GPS/plotter. Communications are robust with two VHF radios on independent battery systems and four handheld VHF-FM radios, plus an ICOM M-700 HF-SSB with antenna tuner, weather fax, SailMail email, and GRIB weather reports. A Navtex weather fax receiver, Raymarine foghorn, Wagner rudder angle indicator, Furuno depth sounder with speed/log, B&G depth sounders with repeater and alarm, B&G windpoint and anemometer, and a Raymarine log complete the instrumentation, alongside a quartz clock and barometer set and a Furuno network sounder. Connectivity is anchored by a 5 ft. Seatel 5009-33 Linear Ku VSAT dome (a $150k installation completed in 2014), an upgraded Panasonic PBX telephone system with intercom/SatTV/SatInternet/Cell/Fax, a remotely PTZ-controlled 13-camera system (installed 2014), and an Inmarsat KVH F55 Fleet 24" dome installed as a backup for redundancy.

Electrical system

Power is delivered by three generators: a Northern Lights 38 kW (2014) with 4,300 hours as of 8/2015; a Northern Lights 55 kW (2015) with 1,200 hours as of 8/2015; and a Caterpillar 3304B 60 kW with 21,000 hours as of 8/2015. The two new generators feature sound-proof enclosures, custom isolation mounts, and custom exhaust systems that virtually eliminate vibration; they are so quiet that normal conversation beside a unit running at maximum output is effortless. Two generators are keel-cooled and dry-stacked; the new 38 kW unit is raw-water cooled with wet exhaust.

The battery system is 24 volts and includes four 8D house/emergency batteries (2015), two 8D batteries per main and generator engine—interlinked (2015), one 8D at the flybridge for emergency (2015), and two spare 8D. Navigation lights are 24 volts to USCG rules. Shore power is 230 VAC from port and starboard with two shore cords on Glendinning. Charging is handled by two Professional Mariner 40 amp 24 volt automatic chargers, two Newmar chargers, and two AtSea shore power converters.

Engine room & mechanical equipment

Propulsion is by Caterpillar 3406 B – TA engines rated 550 HP, thoughtfully de-rated to 310 HP at 1,200 RPM; both mains have been overhauled and upgraded and now show 1,760 hours. With the recent upgrades, Rosa burns 16 gallons per hour at 9 knots including a generator. The main engines and two large generators employ dry-stack exhausts and keel cooling. Main engine soft mounts were renewed and exhaust supports moved off overheads in 2014. Five-blade 40" propellers are driven through Twin Disc 3:1 reduction gear transmissions with trolley pumps (complete rebuild 2011/2012) under Kobelt air-shift controls. Stabilization includes Naiad hydraulic fins (rebuilt in 2011) alongside the dual Seakeeper gyros detailed elsewhere. Fresh water is abundant thanks to a HEM watermaker with UV filter producing 2,000 gpd (upgraded 2015) and a Sea Recovery watermaker with UV filter producing 1,800 gpd (upgraded 2015). Hydraulic pumps are fitted on two generators. Climate control is via Marine Air central chiller three-stage air conditioning (overhauled with all new compressors in 2015), with fresh-water cooling system keel coolers. A portable Numatic pump integrates the oil-change system (serviced 2014). Fuel is polished by an Alfa Laval separator with pre-filter (serviced 2014). Blackwater is treated by a Headhunter sewage treatment system (serviced 2014). Fire protection in the engine room is by an FM200 system with a new Honeywell alarm (2015). All valves, seacocks, and raw-water plumbing were rebuilt in 2014. Emergency bilge/fire protection includes two 110V pumps (serviced 2014), two 24V pumps (serviced 2014), and hand pumps. A Browning air compressor fills four tanks simultaneously (serviced 2014). Engine room lighting was replaced with LED in 2014 when the entire yacht converted 100% to dimmable LED. An oil spill kit with boom and a comprehensive inventory of spare parts and tools sail with the ship.

Tankage

Fuel capacity totals 10,300 gallons; fresh water capacity is 1,400 gallons. Lube oil capacity is 250 gallons, with a 500-gallon waste oil tank. Six water ballast tanks provide additional trim and stability options.

Upgrades

Upgrades and work completed in 2017 underscore Rosa’s meticulous care. The hull received fresh bottom paint; shafts were pulled, with couplings removed and refaced; rudders were pulled; strut bearings were replaced; and the packing in glands was removed and renewed. Distressed aluminum in the shaft alley was cut out and replaced. On the CAT 3406 mains, both cylinder heads were replaced with CAT remanufactured units, injector pumps were removed and serviced, all injectors were replaced, and the port number 6 cylinder liner was replaced. Generator service included removal and replacement with a new 38 kW Northern Lights unit, installation of a new 70 kW CAT electrical end, servicing of the injector pump and injectors on the 55 kW Northern Lights, and replacement of the belt and fresh water pump on the 55 kW unit. The crane received a full service with all hoses replaced. Both washing machines were replaced, the bridge computer monitor was replaced, the B&G master head unit was renewed, DirecTV boxes were upgraded to HD, and the Headhunter wastewater treatment system was updated and upgraded.

The 2014 refit, much of it executed at Marine Group Boat Works (MGBW) in San Diego, was extensive. Two new Seakeeper gyros, model 26/21,000 lb each, were installed as fully independent systems, while the previous fin-based Naiad system was overhauled by Naiad and retained for redundancy, giving Rosa three independent stabilization systems. Thanks to Seakeeper zero-speed capability, Rosa is perhaps the most laterally stable yacht of her size we have experienced; each gyro is sized for yachts of 80'–100', and even with only one unit online in anything but rough seas, lateral roll is practically eliminated. The investment also enhances efficiency, eliminating the underway drag of traditional fins—estimated at 10% of fuel consumption (Nordhavn 120 data)—while Seakeepers draw only 800 W. A new bulbous bow designed by Patrick Bray was installed, bringing ROSA to LOL=LOA=90’. A set of bi-foils (fins) was added beneath the propellers and rudders, with reinforced skegs, for shallow-water propeller protection and increased longitudinal stability. All engines were remounted on new Soundown-designed cushion systems to further control noise and vibration, and exhaust lines were remounted to limit transfer of noise and vibration to the hull; the legacy CAT generator received an extra-padded cover and all exhaust lines were padded. The boat deck was extended aft by 15 ft to shelter the master deck, making Rosa one of the few yachts with a large, private, covered deck accessible directly from the master; it was also widened on both sides forward to cover the side walkways. Upper deck rails around the master deck were replaced by a solid bulwark, and all rails on Rosa were replaced with polished, maintenance-free aluminum. A brand-new Steelhead 5,000 lb crane was installed with structural enhancements. The tender and toy suite was augmented with a utility Zodiac Bayrunner 14’ (50 hp Yamaha) and a Yamaha Cruiser jet ski (175 hp). Two new, quiet, fuel-efficient Northern Lights generators (55 kW and 38 kW) were installed, while the third legacy generator, a CAT 60 kW, was retained for additional redundancy after survey and service (perfect compression, etc.). The two CAT 3406 mains were overhauled and zero-timed in 2012, then thoroughly surveyed and serviced again in 2014; rehanging further reduced noise while preserving impressive fuel efficiency. A brand-new fire suppression system was installed. A pantograph transom door and stairs to the dive shop, along with new dive shop arrangements, were added. Line cutters were fitted to the shafts and stabilizer fins. An extra 20,000 lb of lead ballast was installed low for increased comfort and stability, with water ballast supplementing trim as needed. All tanks were overhauled; grey, black, and fresh water tanks were resurfaced, with any signs of in-tank corrosion addressed. An ultrasound survey of the entire hull revealed no corrosion. All seacocks were renewed. More than $150k of electronics upgrades were executed, including a forward-looking sonar with 3D display and a new NMEA2000 system accessible remotely from smartphones. Over $150k was invested in a new Internet dish and a network with a remotely accessible 18-camera system, plus a new sat phone system to all cabins; not only the cameras, but also all boat systems and diagnostics can be accessed via satellite on any cell phone. Flow-scans were added to all five engines (networked via NMEA2000 and Internet enabled). Externally, the yacht underwent a complete makeover: the entire exterior was stripped top to bottom, primed, and repainted in the United States at MGBW. All decks were completely redone, with new substrate and entirely new teak throughout by Teak Deck Systems, Inc., with warranty. Powder-coated rails were replaced by polished, coated, practically maintenance-free rails. All door lock hardware, hinges, and related fittings were replaced or overhauled and re-polished. The AC system saw a major overhaul (Marine Air triple chiller installed in 2012; all exchangers replaced as needed; all ducts redone and lines re-insulated in 2014). Internally, the yacht was transformed: all carpeting was replaced by Brazilian jatoba flooring; new furniture and appointments were added; handrails were fitted to both sides of all interior and exterior stairs; remote electric blinds were installed; all lighting was converted to dimmable LED; plumbing, water heating, and fixtures were improved; upholstery was renewed throughout in distressed leather; the décor shifted to a non-glossy 1920s style; all TVs (4k), refrigerators, and freezers were replaced; crew quarters were rearranged; and all mattresses were upgraded. A second master bathroom with external access and Calcutta Sepia marble was created, and a carbon-fiber gangway was added. Countless further enhancements followed, including new AC compressors on August 12, 2015.

Remarks

Rosa’s extraordinary volume places her squarely in the comfort class of displacement motor yachts well over 100 feet. This serious, world-class explorer yacht underwent an extensive 2014/15 refit that comprehensively updated and serviced the vessel, including new generators, new Seakeeper zero-speed stabilizers, a new optimized bulb, a complete repaint, and much more totaling over $2.5 million. She has carried her five owners and their families over 50,000 ocean miles on her own bottom, from the Med to New Zealand and back to the West Coast, and she offers a range of over 5,000 miles at an economical 16 gallons per hour at 9 knots—efficiency and seaworthiness at the top of her class. Built entirely in aluminum with immense internal volume, her expansive modern bridge provides a 270-degree view that imparts the presence of a yacht well beyond 100 feet. She carries all the equipment required for serious adventure and play—a dive compressor with racks for 10 tanks, multiple kayaks—and is outfitted to fish with the best. With more than 2,000 gallons per day of fresh water-making capacity and an environmentally friendly sewage treatment system, ROSA is as practical as she is handsome. Built to expedition standards by ABD of Vancouver, Canada, she is designed to take her owner and guests anywhere in the world in comfort and safety. Her owner’s commitment to preventative maintenance shows in every detail; the result is a superbly maintained, thoughtfully equipped cruising yacht that presents a unique opportunity for those ready to venture beyond the ordinary.
