Overview

Primarily freshwater kept. Impeccable throughout, thoughtfully upgraded over time. Fully ready, luxury flybridge motor yacht!

Detailed Description

Introduction

Only Alerion 33 with full lifelines on the market. HERON is impeccably cared for, comprehensively equipped, and presented in true sail‑away condition. She spent her life in Great Lakes freshwater with indoor heated storage through May 2019, a pedigree that shows in every surface and system. Designed for effortless solo or shorthanded sailing, all control lines are led to the helm, and the boat will sail upwind in 20 kts of true wind without a reef. Recent laminate sails, approximately $20K in modern electronics, upgraded canvas including a Fairclough winter cover, renewed running rigging, and a race‑prepared bottom all contribute to exceptional value. Now in the water in Essex, CT, she is fully commissioned and ready to go.

Hull

Crisp white gelcoat topsides are highlighted by an inset Gold Cove Stripe and a single Flag Blue boot stripe, set above red bottom paint. The decks feature contrasting Moondust nonskid with white gelcoat surfaces, while the cockpit sole is laid in teak for timeless warmth and grip. Under the waterline, a spade rudder pairs with a performance winged keel capped by a lead bulb for bite, lift, and balance. The composite hull is built via the SCRIMP infusion process, and both topsides and deck are foam‑cored for stiffness, strength, and weight savings.

Cockpit

The Alerion 33’s cockpit is second to none, with generous, supportive seating for guests and helmsman alike. All control lines are led aft to the helm so the skipper can raise and lower the mainsail from the wheel, and contoured seat cushions with matching backrests add enduring comfort. At the heart is a stainless binnacle with a teak‑and‑stainless steering wheel and teak‑and‑stainless cup holders on the pedestal, plus dedicated pods on the pedestal for the GPS and for the sailing instruments. Entry below is through a Lexan companionway slider and teak‑trimmed hatch boards. Protection comes from a Tan Sunbrella dodger with a large center opening panel, zip‑off sides, and a leather‑bound aft edge, complemented by varnished teak coaming boards. Practicality abounds with two guttered, lockable cockpit lockers on gas struts that include a rack for the companionway boards and custom Textilene mesh storage pouches for lines and fenders, alongside plush cockpit cushions for both seats and contoured backs.

Electronics

A modern suite, thoughtfully arrayed at the helm, begins with an Icom IC‑M424G GPS VHF radio (2022) complete with a handheld remote control for speaker. Entertainment is handled by a Fusion MS IP500 stereo mounted below, paired with a Fusion remote at the starboard helm. Navigation clarity comes from a Raymarine HybridTouch GPS plotter (2022) mounted in a NavPod on the binnacle, with Raymarine digital sailing instruments (2022) in a NavPod above the GPS. Long‑leg confidence is assured by a Raymarine autopilot with hydraulic ram (2022), and a Ritchie compass stands ready for traditional heading reference.

Mechanical

A reliable Yanmar 3YM 20 hp freshwater‑cooled diesel drives through a Yanmar SD‑20 saildrive to a Flexifold two‑blade bronze folding propeller, delivering low drag under sail and smooth thrust under power. Control is intuitive via a single‑lever throttle and shift, with the Yanmar start panel, tachometer, and alarm neatly inset in the starboard cockpit near the helm. Fuel polishing is enhanced by a Racor R20T secondary fuel filter.

Electrical

Power management is straightforward with a rotary on/off switch, a 12v breaker panel with battery monitor, a 12v bilge pump switch, and a 12v outlet. A 15 amp shore‑power receptacle with protective cover resides in a cockpit locker. Hot water is provided by a Quick 16 water heater, while two AGM 4‑D batteries supply robust house capacity, maintained by a ProMariner Pronautic 12‑20P battery charger.

Canvas

Protection and finish are first‑rate: a dodger shields the companionway, and in 2021 KMI Industries supplied new cockpit, helm, and sail covers as well as cockpit‑locker storage pouches to keep gear tidy. For winter layup, a Fairclough cover and frame (2021) preserve the yacht in immaculate condition.

Deck

Varnished teak toe rails, eyebrow trims, and handrails elevate the deck’s classic lines; all brightwork was stripped to bare wood and refinished in 2023. Security is assured by lifelines with bow and stern pulpits and side boarding gates. Access is excellent via a large flush fiberglass aft‑deck hatch and a medium Lewmar cabin‑top hatch. Ground‑tackle management is refined with an anchor locker featuring large bi‑fold flush hatches, housing an approximately 20 lbs anchor with 180 ft of rode marked to measure scope. Hardware includes inset bow and midship chocks in stainless or chromed bronze, six Herreshoff‑style cleats, and properly placed running lights.

Mast and rigging and sails

A Hall carbon fiber mast with double spreaders crowns the sloop rig, which features rod standing rigging with open turnbuckles. The mast and boom are painted light tan to match the decks. A fully battened laminate mainsail (2019) runs on Harken track with slides and cars, while the headsail (2019) sets on Harken roller furling and drives off a Hoyt self‑tacking boom for fingertip control. Power at the helm comes from Harken electric winches either side of the wheel within easy reach, with the port winch offering two speeds. All running rigging was replaced by Sound Rigging in 2021. A mainsheet traveler sits aft of the cockpit, a Windex tops the rig, and a boom vang completes the control package.

Interior

Inside, full‑length port and starboard settees provide refined lounging with storage both beneath and outboard; shelves above hold custom wicker baskets made to measure. A starboard sink cabinet with teak louvered locker door and drawers offers practical stowage, with additional storage behind a drop‑down locker door. To port, a cabinet houses a 12v Isotherm B140 reefer and an Origo 2000 alcohol single burner with a cutting‑board topper, with more outboard stowage behind a lift‑up sliding door. Forward, the port side of the bulkhead opens via a teak bi‑fold panel, and a centerline teak privacy door leads to the forepeak. The head sits forward to port beneath a teak seat, with outboard storage using zip‑open Textilene mesh access. Opposite, a handsome teak countertop cabinet carries an inset stainless sink with hot and cold water and a sliding mirrored cabinet outboard; the pull‑out faucet doubles as a shower. The large V‑berth spans the bow with storage beneath both port and starboard, plus a centerline teak drawer with a teak fold‑down locker beneath. Underfoot, a teak‑and‑holly sole with lift‑outs grants bilge access, and teak companionway steps include a lower step with a hinged lid over a storage box. Rich teak hull sides and solid teak trim contrast with white Formica bulkheads and countertops, while blue upholstered cushions with red piping, chromed swivel reading lamps, ample port lights, and a Raritan PH‑II manual head complete the inviting space.

Safety

Confidence underway comes from four teak handrails on the cabin house and sturdy bow and stern pulpits with double stainless lifelines. Bilge management is robust with a 12v electric bilge pump, a manual bilge pump with a helm‑side handle holder, and a high‑water bilge alarm. Fire preparedness includes two extinguishers at the foot of the companionway plus a dedicated engine‑box port for an extinguisher. An emergency tiller stands ready, with a stainless grab bar atop the helm binnacle and teak handrails flanking the companionway for secure movement. A retractable swim/boarding ladder is neatly inset in the transom. Offshore sensibility continues with jacklines, an MOB unit, and an EPIRB.

Other

Performance is sharpened with bottom paint wet‑sanded for racing in May 2024. On deck, a hot/cold handheld stern shower adds welcome convenience after a swim, and a varnished teak flagstaff with ensign completes the classic silhouette.
