Overview
1981 40-foot classic sailing yacht, United States–based and crafted in solid fiberglass, this elegant monohull blends timeless lines with the reassuring substance of a true cruising sailboat. With a purposeful profile and a beam that carries her strength through the midships, she feels composed and capable under way—an inviting platform for both coastal passages and offshore ambition.
On deck, the fiberglass construction offers confidence, durability, and low maintenance. The cockpit is secure and comfortable for watchkeeping, while side decks provide safe movement when under sail. Her deeper draft rewards the helmsman with steady tracking and a smooth, sea-kindly motion—qualities sailors seek in a Bluewater Cruiser. The 12-foot beam balances power and poise, translating to an assured ride and welcoming space below.
Step inside to a warm and practical cruising interior that sleeps three in comfort. The layout is thoughtfully arranged for life at sea: a restful forward area, a convertible saloon berth, and a private head offer all the essentials for extended voyaging. Natural light and ventilation complement classic joinery, and stowage throughout is designed for real-world cruising. A compact, seaworthy galley sits at the heart of the saloon, paired with a dedicated navigation area that keeps voyage planning tidy and efficient.
Under power, a single Pathfinder diesel inboard provides reliable propulsion and economical range, ideal for motoring between weather windows or easing into a quiet anchorage. The generous 110-gallon fuel capacity supports extended itineraries, while a practical 35-gallon water supply underscores her self-sufficient nature. Simple, serviceable systems keep ownership straightforward—exactly what experienced sailors appreciate in a proven vintage yacht.
Equal parts heritage and honesty, this 40-footer is the kind of Sailing Yacht that invites you to cast off and keep going. She’s an Offshore Cruiser with the heart of a Classic Yacht, a Cruising Sailboat that’s sturdy, sensible, and beautifully seaworthy. Whether you’re seeking a capable coastal cruiser, a bluewater-ready liveaboard, or a well-mannered passage-maker with diesel inboard dependability, this fiberglass monohull stands ready in the United States for her next discerning owner.
Detailed Description
Description
Ketch-rigged aft cockpit and designed by Arthur Edmunds, Jr., Bojangles is an Allied Mistress 39 located in Green Cove Springs, Florida. Described as being “aimed at the cruising yachtsman who wants more comfort, privacy, and docility than the currently popular fin keel/spade rudder racing machine offers,” the Mistress was the largest of Allied’s original fleet, and this rare aft cockpit example is believed to be the last built. A proven world traveler under her previous owner, she is currently undergoing a refit to go the distance again. Her long keel, shallow draft, and 700 sq. ft. ketch rig make her easily driven and easily handled, with ideal manners for island cruising; sail area can be reduced quickly and decisively by dropping the main and running under the working jib and mizzen, which significantly reduces crew requirements. The bridge-friendly 56' mast contributes to a notably stable, stiff feel, while a furling genoa and a staysail provide versatile power across both light and heavy air. Power comes from an ultra‑reliable Pathfinder diesel that uses less than 1 qt/hr, matched to a newly rebuilt transmission with 1–2 hours since overhaul. A Raymarine autopilot (2 complete spare systems on board) and a Hydrovane make single-handing simple and secure. Endurance is bolstered by 110 gallons of fresh water and 35 gallons of fuel. Recent upgrades include all deck teak refinished in 2024, a new alternator in 2023, LED interior lighting (red and white), a hard‑top cockpit enclosure, and extensive fresh refinishing throughout the interior.
Overview
Power is provided by a 1981 Pathfinder diesel engine showing approximately 4500 hours, now complemented by a new alternator, new motor mounts, and new belts; the transmission has just been rebuilt and has 0 hours since rebuild, and fuel burn is about 1 qt per hour. Fuel quality and reliability are ensured by a 3‑stage fuel polishing system with 30, 10, and 2 micron filters along with a new fuel pump and lines. The boat comes with lots of spares, and a spare engine is available. Tankage supports extended cruising with 110 gallons of fresh water, 35 gallons of fuel, and a 6‑gallon black water tank. The electrical suite is thoroughly modern, featuring 3 AGM Group 31 batteries, a Xantrex shore charger, a Victron solar charger, Victron battery management and isolator, a 2000 W pure sine wave inverter, LED lighting (red/white) throughout, a new 55 W alternator, and a Raymarine autopilot with 2 complete spare systems. The galley is properly equipped with a round stainless sink, 2 iceboxes with 4" foam insulation, and a 2‑burner stove with oven (works great). Principal dimensions are seakindly and practical: 40' overall length, 30' LWL, 56' vertical clearance, and a 5.5' draft.
