Overview
The American Tug 34 distinguishes itself among compact trawler yachts with a welcoming, sheltered pilothouse featuring twin side doors for effortless port and starboard deck access. A sunlit salon and galley framed by large windows accompany a generous stateroom with a queen berth and a well-appointed head with a separate shower. Remarkably economical at 8 knots and confidently quick at 16, this pilothouse motor yacht is an ideal Great Loop cruiser, long-range coastal cruiser, and comfortable liveaboard.
Detailed Description
Overview
Conceived by renowned naval architect Lynn Senour, this American Tug 34 fuses the warm, livable charm of a classic pilothouse cruiser with the stout build and offshore confidence of a West Coast fishing trawler. ONE MORE TIME presents in exemplary condition, the product of meticulous stewardship by both current and prior owners—each a repeat American Tug 34 owner who returned to the model after finding no equal in quality, efficiency, or bluewater ability. Among the most coveted yachts in her class, she offers a cozy pilothouse with watertight doors opening to port and starboard side decks, a spacious stateroom with a queen berth and ensuite head featuring a separate stall shower, and a bright, welcoming salon and L-shaped galley framed by large windows. She rewards with outstanding fuel economy at displacement speeds around 8 knots and an effortless cruise up to 16 knots. Perfectly suited to extended cruising, including the Great Loop, this American Tug 34 delivers comfort, reliability, and proven performance in a highly desirable, turn-key package. Highlights include robust, trawler-grade construction; a queen-berth stateroom with ensuite and generous stall shower; a Cummins 380 hp QSB common-rail diesel showing 4360 hours; a cozy pilothouse that seats four with watertight doors to both side decks; a Northern Lights 6 kW generator in a sound shield; air conditioning with reverse-cycle heat; solar panels; a 2015 Highfield 9.5’ inflatable with aluminum bottom; and new Doe Ultraleather on the salon settee and double-wide pilothouse seats.
Salon
Step in through the aft door to a welcoming salon where the L-shaped galley to starboard faces an L-shaped settee to port, newly upholstered in Doe Ultraleather and cleverly converting to a double berth. Six large windows—three of them opening—bathe the space in light and provide superb cross-ventilation, complemented by pleated hi-lo day/night shades on every window. Directly beneath, through a convenient hatch, a well-lit tank room grants excellent access to fuel and water tanks, batteries, and electrics, underscoring the yacht’s service-friendly design. Comfort and ambience are elevated by an AM/FM/CD stereo, dimmable LED overhead lighting, and discreet LED nightlights at ankle level.
Galley/helm/pilothouse
The starboard-side, L-shaped galley is designed for serious cruising, featuring a Force 10 three-burner electric stove with oven, a 7.3 cu.ft. upright Nova Kool refrigerator/freezer, and a microwave oven neatly arranged above the refrigerator. An L-shaped Graincoat countertop with integral double sinks offers generous working space, while dimmable LED overhead lighting and two 120V duplex outlets ensure convenience at hand. Stowage abounds with five large drawers and three capacious cabinets, aided by a custom cutting board fitted to the galley sink and a drinking-water taste/odor filter serving fresh water at the tap. For alfresco cooking, a Magnum stainless-steel propane BBQ grill awaits on the aft deck.
Pilothouse
Three steps up from the salon/galley, the pilothouse offers double-wide pilot and navigator seating for four, newly finished in Doe Ultraleather, with opening watertight doors leading directly to the side decks. Forward-raked windshields deliver excellent visibility and reduced glare, elevating comfort, confidence, and control underway.
Owner stateroom
The owner’s stateroom centers on a true island queen berth measuring 76"L x 57"W, tapered at the foot, with abundant stowage beneath. To starboard, a cedar-lined hanging locker with LED lighting complements a port-side locker with shelf and LED illumination, while opening storage lockers flank the berth on both sides and twin LED reading lights crown the head of the bed. Two-way switching serves the overhead LEDs, with LED nightlights at ankle level for safe nighttime movement. Natural light and fresh air flow through two round opening portlights with screens and an overhead hatch fitted with a custom OceanAire blackout shade and screen. Power and comfort are assured with two 120V AC duplex outlets, a built-in 120V AC King 750-watt electric heater, and a 12V DC Heatercraft engine-coolant heater that warms both stateroom and pilothouse underway. A teak door offers tidy access to the chain locker.
Head
The ensuite head is outfitted for comfort and autonomy, featuring a VacuFlush model 1008 freshwater-flush 12V toilet feeding a 45-gallon polyethylene holding tank with macerator, overboard pump, and deck pumpout. A refined vanity with Raincoat counter and integral sink provides three drawers and additional storage below, flanked by large mirrors on two bulkheads and an extra mirrored teak medicine chest cabinet. The large fiberglass shower with glass door feels residential, set over a handsome teak-and-holly sole. A round opening port with screen welcomes fresh air, while a 120V AC duplex outlet supports grooming appliances. A dedicated head-and-shower sump with auto-flow sensor services the shower and lavatory, complemented by a hand soap dispenser at the sink and a soap-and-shampoo dispenser in the shower.
Electrical
Power systems are engineered for quiet independence and effortless control. A Northern Lights model 673L 6 kW generator resides in an NL hush box with approximately 700 hours, managed via a remote start/stop panel in the pilothouse. On the pilothouse roof, two 175-watt rigid solar panels deliver a total of 350 watts, regulated by Victron Smart Solar 75150 MPPT controllers to minimize generator run time. All interior, deck, and anchor DC lighting has been upgraded to LEDs for low battery draw. Remote-control battery switching from the pilothouse ties into a backlit Blue Sea AC/DC main breaker panel and an SCR automatic battery combiner (house and starting) protected by two 150A circuit breakers. Shore-side protection includes galvanic isolators—one for each shore power line—plus two 30-amp shore power inlets with three 50’ power cords and two shore-power circuit breakers located in the main salon adjacent to the inlets; a cable TV service inlet is also provided. Inversion and charging are handled by a Magnum MS2012 2000-watt inverter with an integral 100-amp fast charger, complemented by a Magnum ME-RC250 remote control panel in the pilothouse with AC/DC voltmeter, and a Xantrex TruCharge 40-amp charger as a robust backup. Batteries include three Lifeline 4D AGM house units totaling 630 amp-hours, one Lifeline 4D AGM engine-start battery at 210 amp-hours, and one Group 24 AGM generator-start battery. Safety and convenience are furthered by Rule 1500 GPH bilge pumps with three float switches, a 12V windshield defroster system, 12V stainless-steel trumpet horns, international navigation lights, and comprehensive 12V LED courtesy, overhead, and ankle-level lighting throughout the boat.
Engine and mechanical
The machinery suite centers on a Cummins 380 HP QSB-5.9 electronic common-rail engine showing 4360 hours, turning through a Twin Disc MG5061 transmission with a 2.43:1 ratio. A Northern Lights model 673L 6 kW generator in an NL hush box, remotely controlled from the pilothouse, supports hotel loads at anchor. Fuel is polished by a duplex Racor 75900MAX fuel/water separator with Racor vacuum gauge, while the generator is protected by a dedicated Racor 900 system. Breathing is managed by a Walker Aires air filter assembly. Seawater intakes are upgraded with external Groco bronze strainers over both the generator and air-conditioner intakes, and transmission cooling benefits from a custom long-life cupronickel oil cooler. An aftercooler has been renewed at 4360 hours. The driveline features a Shaft Shark serrated circular line cutter on the propeller shaft, a Tides Marine water-injected dripless shaft seal, and a four-blade 26 x 25 1/2 bronze propeller. Low-speed authority and close-quarters control come from SidePower twin-blade bow and stern thrusters with a pilothouse joystick and a walk-around remote. Climate control is provided by MarineAir 120V AC air conditioning with reverse-cycle heat in two zones, 16,000 BTU and 12,000 BTU. Below the waterline, thru-hulls are Forespar Marelon; above, stainless steel. Servicing is made easy by a Reverso 12V DC oil-change system serving the main engine, generator, and transmission, and a Seward stainless-steel hot-water heater (11 gallons) heated by both 120V AC and engine coolant. Safety is enhanced by a Fireboy automatic fire-extinguishing system in the engine room. Sanitation is handled by a VacuFlush 1008 12V toilet and marine system with a 45-gallon polyethylene holding tank, macerator, overboard pump, and deck pumpout. Steering is via a Telefax SeaStar hydraulic steering pump, cylinder, and ram. Rounding out the package are a built-in Monrezuma toolbox with a large inventory of tools, a line cutter, and a detailed maintenance log.
Pilothouse/helm
Connectivity and command come together at the helm. A Starlink satellite communications system delivers ultra-fast Internet, Wi‑Fi, and streaming TV via a solid-mounted Starlink antenna on the boat deck and a Starlink router in the pilothouse providing full-boat coverage. Security and awareness are bolstered by a Siren Marine MTC alarm system. Navigation is powered by an Acer Aspire 5 laptop running Coastal Explorer electronic charting, interfaced to the vessel’s NMEA 2000 network through an Actisense NMEA 2000 to NMEA 0183 gateway. Comprehensive Navionics electronic charts span the USA East Coast, Mid-Atlantic canyons, Southeast Bahamas, Great Lakes, Canadian Maritimes, Southeast Alaska, and British Columbia. Primary displays comprise two Raymarine a125 12-inch multifunction touchscreens with GPS, chartplotter, and depth sounder; steering is eased by a Raymarine ST6001 SmartPilot autopilot with hardwired remote, while a Raymarine ST60 rudder-angle indicator and Raymarine i50 depth/speed/log provide at-a-glance data. Targeting and weather awareness are served by a Raymarine HD 18" 4K color radar and a Raymarine AIS 650 transceiver. Fishing intelligence comes from a Raymarine CP100 DownVision fish-finder sonar. Communications are clear via a Raymarine Ray 60 VHF. Classic instrumentation includes a Weems & Plath barometer, tide clock, and thermometer at the helm, complemented by a Weems & Plath barometer in the salon, and an LED-lit compass to keep you on course. A main-engine raw-water flow alarm adds a further layer of protection.
Deck, safety and mooring
Anchoring and deck operations are confidently handled by a Lofrans Tigres 1500-watt/12V horizontal windlass paired with an oversize 66 lb Lewmar Claw anchor and 275 feet of 5/16" HT galvanized chain, securely made fast to the chain locker with a floating yellow line. Backup ground tackle includes a 44 lb Lewmar Claw stowed beneath the berth and a Fortress FX-16 anchor with chain and 5/16" rode in the lazarette, supported by anchor snubber lines. A saltwater washdown with hose serves the windlass area for clean, easy recoveries. A hinged transom door with dam/splash shield and scuppers opens to a swim platform protected by a stainless-steel edge guard; the swim ladder folds discreetly beneath. An American Tug tanner 12V stainless-steel stern davit streamlines dinghy launch and retrieval. Comfort details include a hot/cold freshwater cockpit shower, a removable chrome flagstaff with a 24" x 36" ensign, and a stainless jackstaff for a burgee on the bow rail.
Dinghy
A 2015 Highfield RIB 9.5’ with aluminum bottom is powered by a Tohatsu 9.8 hp four-stroke electric-start outboard, enhanced by a custom stainless-steel leaning post for easy boarding added in 2023. Launching and retrieval are simplified by a custom lifting-strap harness. Systems include a 12V AGM start battery in a battery box and a red plastic fuel tank. A small anchor and rode round out this capable tender package.
Extras included in sale
Thoughtful cruising extras convey, including a comprehensive inventory of spares for the engine, generator, and more—belts, impellers, filters, pumps, hoses, and beyond—plus a complete maintenance log. Original documentation from Tomco, Cummins, Northern Lights, Raymarine, and other OEM providers accompanies the vessel, along with the American Tug Owner Experiences Book. Classic Weems & Plath instruments include a clock, barometer, and a tide clock. Galley essentials—pots, pans, and cookware—remain aboard, as do conveniences such as a lithium battery–powered upright vacuum cleaner, bucket and scrub brush, an Absorber synthetic chamois, a waterproof flares container with flares, assorted spare zincs, a large galley trash can and a small head trash can, and new mesh window covers.
Safety and fire protection
Safety systems are comprehensive, led by a Fireboy FE241 built-in engine-room fire suppression system with a remote in the pilothouse, backed by portable fire extinguishers and a carbon monoxide detector. Man-overboard preparedness is ensured by a Lifesling recovery system housed in a deck-mounted hard canister, while offshore readiness is strengthened by a Winslow Pelican Pac coastal four-person life raft in a deck-mounted hard canister. Audible signaling is delivered by 12V stainless-steel trumpet horns, and dewatering is supported by three Rule bilge pumps, each with an automatic float switch. Electronic vigilance is provided by a Siren Marine alarm system monitoring vessel location, battery and electrical status, and bilge-water alarms.
