Overview

With a forward watertight crash bulkhead, a sealed rudder compartment, intelligent charging and fuel systems, and a versatile cutter rig that adapts to any conditions, this bluewater cruiser is prepared to protect her owners wherever their cruising grounds lie.

Jellyfish Problems has just received a comprehensive electronics refit, and with solar array, stainless arch, and integrated davits, this offshore sailing yacht and luxury cruising monohull is poised for new passages.

Detailed Description

Description

Engineered for bluewater confidence, she carries a watertight collision bulkhead forward and a water‑tight rudder dam, then pairs those structural safeguards with truly smart charging and fuel management systems that simplify life offshore. The Caliber Convertible Cutter Rig lets her shift seamlessly from sloop to cutter for versatile, safe handling in any sailing conditions, while the rig’s self‑sufficiency is echoed by solar capability and thoughtful systems throughout. Jellyfish Problems has just been refreshed with an all‑new electronics suite, and with solar panels feeding a robust energy architecture, a stainless steel arch integrating clean, integral davits, and the kind of specification that anticipates far horizons, she is poised for new adventures wherever you choose to roam.

Overview

On deck, Jellyfish Problems blends strength with effortless handling. Safety begins with a six‑person liferaft new in 2020 and continues forward with two anchor rollers on a stainless steel platform with a stainless steel striker, all served by a Lofrans Project 1000 windlass with chain and rope capstan and controls both at the windlass and in the cockpit. Primary sailhandling is powerful and refined, with upgraded Anderson #52ST primary winches, upgraded Lewmar #48CST halyard winches and two Lewmar mast winches. The helm is centered on an Edson Vision pedestal with angled guard, precise steering gear and a custom‑rim stainless‑steel leather‑covered folding wheel, plus a NavPod for chartplotter and autopilot control and a Ritchie compass for instant reference. Safety Sea Rails run from bow to stern pulpit with safety lines through stainless steel stanchions and a gate to each side. The companionway is secured and made convenient by custom Zarcor cafe‑style doors with removable polycarbonate and screen inserts, complemented by solid drop boards. Comfort touches include cockpit cushions, an Edson teak cockpit table and a cockpit table, a cockpit ice‑box locker, a transom‑mounted freshwater shower and an anchor washdown. The deck is as durable as it is practical, with maintenance‑free aluminum toe rails and hand rails, a mushroom vent to the forward shower and two salon air vents with dorades. Natural light and ventilation are abundant through Lewmar Ocean hatches with built‑in Sky screens and blind shades in the large hatches, protected by Outbound hatch covers on all exposed deck hatches, plus two Lewmar Ocean 60 hatches new in 2019, twelve stainless steel opening portlights and six large mooring cleats. A deck padeye stows the convertible cutter inner stay when not in use, and cockpit pad eyes stand ready for tether attachment.

Her interior accommodations are remarkably comfortable and spacious for her size, finished throughout in teak with solid capping, a beautiful teak‑and‑holly floor and multiple handrails that make movement secure at sea. There is ample lighting with reading and overhead lights, cooling fans, and both AC and 12V outlets, while numerous portlights and hatches provide generous natural light and ventilation. Among boats of comparable length, few approach the Caliber 40 for livability: the forward master cabin is a true stateroom with a generous offset double berth and ample storage, including drawers below; a shelf and book rack over the berth; a large two‑door cedar‑lined hanging locker; and an open two‑shelf locker with a custom two‑drawer and shoe‑locker cabinet beneath. The hull sides are lined with solid teak battens. The forward master head is private and spacious, with a separate shower enclosed by a Plexiglas door and Corian “Sahara” counters, creating a luxurious suite for extended stays. The main salon is richly furnished in teak and takes full advantage of headroom and beam to form a welcoming “living room” for entertaining. Two settees offer generous seating; one converts into a double berth for a total of seven berths, with storage under and behind both settees and teak cabinets above. A twin‑leaf dining table folds up against the bulkhead for additional space. Aft, the stateroom features a double berth with storage cabinet beneath and a large cedar‑lined three‑shelf cabinet, along with a private entry door to the aft head to ensure guest privacy. The aft head, positioned conveniently to the cockpit, has entrances from both the aft cabin and the salon, and both heads are fully outfitted with pressurized hot and cold water and showers.

The navigation station sits to port aft of the galley and is outfitted for passage‑making with a chart table and hinged lid with storage above and below, a chart light, an electronics cabinet, a breaker panel, a Balmar battery monitor, a DC plug, a navigation seat with storage under and an additional DC panel for extra equipment. Any cook will appreciate the large, efficient L‑shaped galley directly aft of the salon, with abundant Corian counter space and an extension leaf when more room is required, and dedicated storage for food, dishes and cookware. Galley and interior equipment includes 12V two‑speed fans; an ASUS 23‑inch flat‑panel monitor and Bose speaker system; Alpenglow lighting selectable white or red and energy‑saving Luna Sea LED interior lights; LED red floor courtesy lights; an air conditioner unit; twin stainless‑steel sink basins with hot/cold mixer faucet; a Seagull potable water filter system with its own faucet; Frigaboat refrigeration with a single compressor in the cockpit locker/lazarette and a keel‑cooler‑fitted heat exchanger; an efficient, spacious fridge/freezer divided into two compartments with cooling plates in the freezer and a thermostatically controlled spillover fan into the fridge; manual pump‑out for fridge and freezer; a Force 10 two‑burner propane stove with oven; two aluminum propane tanks, 10 lbs each; a 6‑gallon water heater heated by engine coolant heat exchanger or 110V; a manual freshwater foot pump; and a trash bin under the entry step.

Her electrical architecture is robust and intelligently integrated. Caliber’s 12‑volt Smart Electrical System with Ample Power V3 Smart Regulator works in concert with an Ample Power 90‑amp alternator with Smart Regulator and a large‑frame alternator adding an additional 180 amps. An engine start battery, an emergency cross‑over switch, a reverse‑polarity switch and a battery isolation switch provide redundancy and protection. A Victron Energy 12V/3000W/120A inverter/charger with sine‑wave output and Victron Phoenix Multi Control anchors the AC/DC interface. Renewable power comes from 600 watts of solar panels with a solar controller and temperature sensor installed in 2020, paired with a Blue Sky controller. House energy is stored in AGM batteries—three 4D house and one start battery from 2018—with DC outlets distributed throughout the interior and cockpit. Shore power is through a 110V AC Smart Plug 30‑amp connection with two 50‑amp cords, GFCI‑protected AC outlets in heads and galley, a 50‑amp‑to‑30‑amp pigtail splitter and galvanic isolators new in 2020.

Navigation and communications electronics were comprehensively renewed in 2024. A new Garmin autopilot is joined by a new Garmin chartplotter with current, updated charts and a new Garmin radar with map overlay integrated into the plotter. New Garmin instruments on a NMEA 2000 backbone feed three new Garmin Multis over the companionway—GMI 20 in color for wind—plus a new Garmin Standard Multi display at the helm and a new Garmin Standard Multi display at the nav station. A new wind sensor at the masthead reports through a Garmin GND 10 Black Box Bridge and the NMEA backbone cable. VHF communications are handled by an Icom IC‑M4240 transceiver with an Icom IC‑M 157 remote full‑function mic (RAM at helm). Offshore systems include a factory‑installed SSB counterpoise (ground plane), a Pactor Modem III with Bluetooth and an IridiumGo mounting kit with power and external antenna (unit not included). An insulated backstay supports SSB performance, and a custom companionway mount with an instrument pod plus a stereo with Bose speakers complete the helm and cabin experience.

Comfort and convenience extend deep into the systems level: an air conditioner unit; a Frigaboat refrigerator and freezer, keel‑cooled; an anchor washdown hose; a Tank Tender system; a Seagull drinking water filter system; and a water heater heated by engine or 110V new in 2018. Fuel management is first‑class with the Caliber second‑generation Smart Fuel Panel featuring independent dual Racor 500 filter fuel delivery systems, dual pre‑fuel strainers, a vacuum gauge for fuel filters and a backup electric fuel pump with a fuel polishing system. Serviceability is exceptional, with inspection and access ports on water, fuel and holding tanks. Drivetrain and plumbing upgrades include a dripless shaft seal renewed in 2019, a cutlass bearing in 2019, an automatic shower sump pump in 2019 and a freshwater pump in 2019, along with dual‑tank water systems with inline strainer and an easily accessed engine sea strainer. Bilge management is redundant with a manual bilge pump and an emergency 2000 gph bilge pump, backed by an upgraded engine panel with analog gauges and digital hour meter, an automatic engine‑room blower, an emergency tiller, holding‑tank deck pump‑out and holding‑tank gravity drain, a dripless shaft seal and a Max three‑blade feathering prop from 2017. An engine‑room light selectable red and white aids night operations.

Under sail, the specification shines. A Selden in‑mast furling system carries a new 2020 mainsail, specifically a new Quantum Fusion M6 Carbon/Technora furling main that furls and unfurls smoothly in all conditions while delivering tough, high‑performance shape. A continuous‑loop mainsail furling line and outhaul are led to the cockpit, as are the controls for the Selden gas/spring boom vang. A deck‑mounted main traveler is likewise led to the cockpit. Forward, a 125% Doyle genoa from 2018 with a Sunbrella cover runs on a Furlex roller‑furling system. The Caliber Convertible Cutter Rig brings true versatility and heavy‑air safety, converting from sloop to cutter with a self‑tacking staysail with Sunbrella cover on a Selden Furlex roller‑furling system, and a Quantum spinnaker with a sock for easy launching and dousing new in 2020. An insulated backstay supports SSB. A spinnaker halyard, an extra jib halyard and an extra main halyard are fitted to the Selden keel‑stepped, double‑spreader aluminum mast. Running rigging is color‑coded, with twin backstays, self‑tailing halyard, genoa and mast‑mounted winches, line hangers in the cockpit, upgraded Anderson #52 primary winches and upgraded Lewmar #48 halyard winches. A whisker pole and a boom brake round out the package.

Safety, canvas and ground tackle complete the picture. Structural peace of mind comes from a Water Tight Collision Bulkhead, Caliber Impact Resistance Zones, a water tight Rudder Dam and the Caliber Triple‑Support Rudder System, while anchoring confidence is assured by the Caliber Smart Anchoring System, a primary Manson 60 anchor and ground tackle for a secondary Fortress anchor. Visibility and compliance are supported by LED navigation lights and a masthead tri‑color light from 2019. New lifelines arrived in 2018. Bilge and drainage are supported by a shower/drain and bilge pump with water sensor, an Attwood Heavy Duty automatic bilge pump with water sensor and a Whale manual bilge pump. On deck, the Caliber factory Smart Cantilever Bimini design leaves the sides of the cockpit clear for entering and exiting, complemented by dodgers with new acrylic forward panels from 2019 and covers, a connector canvas between the Bimini and the dodger and a pedestal cover. Spares are aboard. Exclusions: no motor or dinghy; tools onboard are considered personal gear.
