Detailed Description
Walk through
The Independence 50 is a two-stateroom, two-head cruising yacht of exceptional build and quality, conceived for effortless movement throughout. Beginning on the fully enclosed aft deck, you step into a full-beam salon where the intelligent use of space and refined design immediately reveals itself. Forward to port the galley serves the main deck, a private centerline companionway leads directly to the master, and a starboard stair rises to the pilothouse. Ascending to the large, airy pilothouse, you find an expansive lounge with a drop-leaf table, a watch berth set up and just abaft the seating, and a centerline helm station, all flanked by wing doors port and starboard and a starboard companionway descending to the guest stateroom and head. Following the companionway down takes you forward into the forepeak stateroom and head, or aft into the master stateroom. Stepping out of either pilothouse wing door puts you on the generous foredeck with built-in seating atop the deckhouse, while either side deck leads aft to the boat deck, where the dinghy, davit, and a custom freezer locker are neatly arranged for voyaging readiness.
Electronics & navigation
The helm is fully outfitted for confident passagemaking with Raymarine E 120 and E 80 MFD’s paired to Raymarine radar, complemented by an NView Marine system with AIS and Coastal Explorer marine navigation software running on an HP Compaq computer. Position and depth intelligence comes via a Furuno GP-32 GPS/WAAS Navigator, a Sitex CVS-106 color depth sounder, and an Interphase forward-viewing sonar, while a Simrad Robertson AP 300 CX autopilot holds your track true. Communications include an Icom M127 VHF radio and two Standard Horizon REM+ VHF units located in the pilothouse and master stateroom. Performance data is clearly presented on KVH Quadro digital speed/temperature/depth displays and a Ritchie PowerDamp compass, with wind information on a Navman Wind 3150 speed and direction display. A WiFi antenna with amplifier and a cellular antenna keep you connected offshore. Entertainment is equally considered with an Alpine AM/FM/XM/CD stereo, a Clarion sub-woofer with remote control, a Sony DVP-NC875V 5 DVD/CD player, a Niles SSVC-4 speaker selector and volume control system, and JBL speakers throughout.
Electrical equipment
Electrical infrastructure is robust and redundant, centered on a 12 kW Northern Lights genset in a sound shield with 1600 hours and start/stop at the helm, backed by a Magnum Energy Magna Sine MS 4024 4 kW inverter/charger with a pilothouse monitor, a ProTech 4 model 2425 24V battery charger/power supply rated at 25 amps, and a C-Charger 5000 Series 20 amp charger. Shore interface is 125V 50 amp with a Glendinning CableMaster and an Isoboost transformer, while a 24V alternator delivering 140 amps feeds through a Heart three-stage regulator. The battery suite comprises four 8D’s for the 24V house bank, two 8D AGM’s for the main engines, one 4D gel for 12V electronics, and one Group 34 gel for the genset. Distribution and protection are handled by Paneltronics: a 240/120V AC breaker panel with frequency, voltage, and current meters; a 240V AC distribution panel for shore one and two, genset, and inverter; and a 24/12V DC breaker panel with line voltage and current meters.
Mechanical systems & equipment
Mechanicals are turnkey and freshly serviced as of June 2024, including coolers and heat exchangers, belts, hoses, oil and impellers, and fresh coolant on both mains and genset. Propulsion is by twin Cummins Diamond Series 6BTA5.9 diesels rated at 370 HP with approximately 2500 hours TT, monitored by VDO gauges for RPM/hours, voltmeters, engine temperature, oil pressure, and transmission pressure, driving through Twin Disc transmissions with trolling valves and controlled by Kobelt single-lever controls, aided by a Glendinning synchronizer. Vibration is tamed by an Aquadrive system, with PSS PRO Dripless ten-year shaft seals and S/S Aquamet 22 shafts plus a spare mounted in the engine room, swinging 4-blade 29" Nibral props protected by Spurs shaft cutters. Handling finesse comes from Bennett trim tabs with digital indicators at the helm, Naiad fin stabilizers, a Sleipner SidePower 20 HP dual-prop bow thruster, and Hynautic hydraulic steering. Fuel and systems intelligence includes two FloScan fuel flow monitoring indicators, dual Racor fuel/water separators, a fuel polishing and transfer system, and an Oil X-Change-R system for mains and genset. Climate and utilities are covered by three Dometic reverse-cycle air conditioning and heating units, an Offshore Marine Baltic watermaker rated at 500 gallons per day, a Torrid hot water heater, and a SeaFire halon fire extinguishing system, with oil pressure, temperature, fuel, and high-water alarms, Computrol fuel and water indicators, a Computank control in the pilothouse, and a Water Witch programmable on/off timer. Accommodations are served by two SeaLand freshwater heads, a Glendinning Cable master system for the 50 amp power cord, a Kabola 24VDC diesel furnace heat (in-op), a Nick Jackson 800 lbs. electric dinghy davit, three windshield washer/wipers, and individual Bosch clothes washer and dryer.
Deck & hull
Built for strength and longevity, the hull below the waterline is solid, hand-laid fiberglass, finished with Pettit Trinidad HD bottom paint applied in 2023. Decks are balsa-cored with vinylester resin for osmotic blister control, and the hull wears a linear polyurethane finish. Teak decking graces the cockpit and side decks, with raised forward bulwarks capped in teak and aluminum rails, complemented by teak rub rails and aluminum handrails. The aluminum bow pulpit carries twin rollers and a dual Lighthouse windlass with twin capstans and wildcats, controlled from a pilothouse remote with counter. Ground tackle comprises two anchors: a 66# Bruce on 200' of chain and a 75# CQR on 310' of chain, with fresh and salt water washdowns at the bow, dedicated anchor and stowage lockers, and forward bench seating below the pilothouse windshield over two lockers. Night operations benefit from a foredeck floodlight, a Lewmar foredeck hatch with screen, deck prisms port and starboard, and four adjustable dorade vents. The boat carries a 12' Bullfrog 2005 tender with steering, powered by a 20 HP Honda BAMJ-201839 four-stroke outboard with a Doel-fin hydrofoil stabilizer, protected by a full tender cover and secured in dinghy chocks beside a Nick Jackson 800# electric davit and a hydraulic ram to raise and lower the mast. Three Lewmar hatches with screens and canvas covers—two in the pilothouse and one on the foredeck—partner with sliding pilothouse doors port and starboard and Diamond Seaglaze doors and windows, including opening windows in both pilothouse and salon. Glazing is 1/4" safety glass with numerous opening ports. On the boat deck a 24V deck freezer stands ready, while aft there is a fiberglass swim platform with S/S rails, a transom door, and two rod holders on the aft deck, plus a hot and cold freshwater shower. Thoughtful touches include a custom side deck boarding locker with foredeck stowage, a vented dual-tank propane locker, an emergency steering tiller and a manual bilge pump, a Perko heavy-duty searchlight, twin electric horns, a dockside water inlet, and a rail-mount propane gas BBQ. Weather protection is comprehensive, with a unique, expansive aft deck enclosure offering panels in clear vinyl, canvas, Textaline, and insect screening for true all-season flexibility, and complete canvas covers for the windshield, hatches, dinghy, and a full cockpit bimini and enclosure.
Galley
Beautifully updated and positioned forward to port on the main deck, the spacious, efficient galley rivals those on much larger yachts, with abundant counters and work surfaces bathed in natural light from large windows. Equipment includes a Nova Kool RFU9000 12V refrigerator, a Vesta DWV335 BBS dishwasher, an Amana four-burner propane gas cooktop with a gas monitor and control panel, and a Sharp microwave/convection oven, all set into custom granite countertops alongside a large stainless sink. Stowage is generous both above and below the counters, with recessed overhead lighting completing this inviting culinary workspace.
Salon
RED OCTOBER welcomes you with a tastefully appointed, full-beam main salon anchored by an L-shaped settee to port with a large retractable teak dining table and by two custom built-in oversize chairs to starboard. Seven opening windows, abundant lighting, and a large Dutch Sea Glaze entry door create superb natural light, ambience, and ventilation, whether you enter from the enclosed aft deck/cockpit or come down from the pilothouse. The space is finished with a teak and holly sole and teak paneling, with recessed overhead lighting and window blinds, and the teak dining table can be positioned for dining or coffee. Large windows span three sides, dorade vents in the overhead promote airflow, and custom cabinetry includes forward starboard lockers purpose-built for the washer and dryer, all served by a discreet entertainment center and Dometic air conditioning.
Pilothouse
A true command center for voyaging, the Cherubini’s pilothouse delivers sweeping sightlines, immediate access to both side decks, and generous seating, including a watch berth, so everyone can be part of the passage. The helm is set on the centerline with a drop-leaf table immediately abaft it and just ahead of the lounge, ideal for meals, drinks, or spreading out a chart, while the watch berth directly aft is fitted with opening ports, fans, and reading lights. Forward to starboard a companionway leads down to the guest stateroom. Ventilation and light come from two overhead hatches with screens and canvas covers, two opening ports aft, two port lights, and two dorade vents. Practicality abounds with stowage beneath both the watch berth and the lounge, drawers and lockers at the helm, a teak and holly sole, recessed overhead lighting with two dedicated reading lights, OCM air conditioning, two circulating fans, two speakers, a ship’s bell, and two breaker panels for AC and DC plus a distribution switch panel, with Textaline window covers for sun control.
Master stateroom and head
Midships for optimal comfort, the master stateroom offers a unique dual-access arrangement with a private entrance from the salon or shared access from the forward companionway, and an en suite head to starboard. Warm teak paneling and a teak and holly sole frame an athwartship queen berth with twin nightstands, served by two large opening ports in the hull side and one small opening port to the side deck, all with draperies. Storage is abundant, with a queen bunk base concealing six drawers, two hanging lockers, and seven additional drawers, while two reading lights and overhead recessed lighting set the mood. The aft bulkhead provides direct owner/operator access to the engine room. The head is thoughtfully finished with a stall shower featuring two opening ports and a bench seat, a Sea Land fresh water head, a Tank Watch monitor, a recessed sink, an additional opening port, ample stowage, an exhaust fan, and recessed lighting.
Guest stateroom and head
Inviting and functional, the forepeak guest stateroom features an oversized V-berth with two large bunks, bathed in natural light from an overhead hatch with screen and canvas cover and two portlights. Climate is managed by air conditioning, sound by two JBL speakers, and the teak and holly sole underscores the yacht’s craftsmanship. Storage abounds with two hanging lockers, two lockers at the V-berth, and eleven drawers, while overhead recessed lighting and two reading lights add comfort. There is direct access to the chain locker, and private access to the guest head, which is fitted with a stall shower with an opening port, a Sea Land fresh water head, an additional opening port, a tiled sole, ample stowage, and recessed overhead lighting.
Remarks
The Cherubini Independence 50 is a rare, U.S.-built cruising yacht celebrated for premium construction and renowned sea-keeping, designed by Gary Grant and James Backus to rigorous specifications that prioritize stability and safety, efficiency, speed, minimal maintenance, quality construction and strength, interior cubic space, and flawless lines. Step aboard and it is immediately clear she is meant to travel; the depth of thought and detail in her build elevates her to a coveted offering in the cruising/trawler class. Thanks in part to her full-beam salon, she presents far larger than her 50', and she is impressively modernized, meticulously maintained, and comprehensively equipped. With a 1,000-mile range she is an ideal candidate for extended voyaging—whether the Pacific Northwest, the Caribbean, or the Great Loop—yet her twin Cummins engines also deliver the speed needed for short hops or to outrun weather or tides.
