Overview
A 109-foot classic sailing yacht of distinguished 1940s provenance, launched in 1939 and presently lying in Spain, she embodies the romance of bluewater voyaging with the steadfast confidence for which steel yachts are renowned. Her steel hull and decks impart a reassuring solidity underway, while the graceful sweep of her sheer and balanced overhangs speak to a bygone era of craftsmanship. With a draft of approximately 8.2 feet, she threads comfortably into Mediterranean harbors and secluded anchorages alike, inviting unhurried exploration along storied coasts and across open horizons. Under sail she rewards the helmsman with poise and momentum; at anchor her broad decks set the stage for effortless alfresco living and refined entertaining.
Inside, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming—an elegant saloon for convivial gatherings, classic detailing that honors her heritage, and serene private quarters that offer a quiet retreat after a day at sea. Thoughtful circulation between cockpit, wheelhouse, and interior keeps life aboard intuitive and comfortable, whether hosting on a sunlit afternoon or savoring a candlelit dinner in calm waters. She is a Classic Yacht in the truest sense: timeless, tactile, and utterly engaging, yet practical and purposeful for extended cruising.
When conditions call for power, her single Caterpillar engine delivers smooth, reliable propulsion, cruising economically at about 9 knots and reaching up to 11 knots when needed. For connoisseurs of classic sail yachts seeking enduring beauty paired with authentic seakeeping, this distinguished vessel offers a rare opportunity—an evocative, sea-kindly companion ready to inspire new chapters under canvas and to welcome her next custodian on the quays of Spain.
Detailed Description
Iduna exterior and interior
As you walk across the passerelle and step onto Iduna’s stern, you are immediately captivated by the sensuous sheer of her long, flat deck. The expansive teak planking sweeps forward in a distinctive style and shape that exudes classic elegance. The materials heighten the ambience, with nickel, aluminium bronze, stainless steel, leather, varnished wood and sails all offering a singular look and feel. You may feel yourself drifting back in time, knowing that others have stood on this deck before, facing the elements and relishing every rain-soaked moment. The preservation and restoration of so many original features make Iduna historically compelling. The deck remains uncannily close to its 1939 appearance, with original elements that include the main mast, skylights, deck saloon, compass, anchor winch and steering wheel. Iduna’s teak deck was laid in the traditional way, with a planking pattern that follows the old to the millimetre, while all replica fittings have a traditional bronze look, designed and cast to appear completely authentic. From the helm you can oversee the rigging, made by Harry Spencer of Cowes, and the classically coloured Ratsey & Lapthorne sails. With its fold-down captain’s seat and ample space for others to enjoy the panoramic views, the helm is a coveted spot, complete with a niche built into the dashboard to cradle your drink and cigar.
Descending the staircase from Iduna’s deckhouse is like stepping back into the golden age of yachting. Although the entire interior is brand new, the rebuild brief was to create the appearance of a boat immaculately kept for 65 years, and the result is superb. Every material has a vintage character, down to panels with the odd knot or tasteful scratch. The decorative scheme reinforces the authentic mood: restrained furniture fabrics and understated cream carpeting create an air of calm, allowing cushions and artwork to introduce brightness and colour. The attention to detail is extraordinary, from door handles and hinges to porthole basins and lighting, where design and function are in perfect harmony. Cherrywood is used to great effect throughout an interior that includes an owner’s stateroom, a guest double with ensuite bathroom, an ensuite guest twin, and two large cabins for four crew members served by a spacious bathroom, galley and crew mess. A lovely lounge area offers another venue for fine dining in addition to the deckhouse. Modern conveniences ensure comfort while never being obtrusive on the classic atmosphere.
