Detailed Description
Overview
TUMBLEWEED is a well-appointed, stabilized Grand Banks 42 Classic that presents beautifully throughout, showcasing the traditional teak and quality finishes for which the marque is renowned. Boarding is effortless from either the port or starboard gates onto full walk-around teak decks, setting the tone for refined cruising.
Aft, the elevated sun deck is thoughtfully equipped with dinghy chocks, a rail-mounted grill, and a boom with an electric winch. Four steps rise to the flybridge, where the top deck welcomes gatherings around a built-in teak table complemented by four folding teak chairs and two additional folding cocktail tables. Molded bench seating is arranged to port and starboard, with an extra-wide molded helm bench to starboard and a separate mate’s bench to port. A bimini with a matching blue canvas helm cover provides shade and protection. Aft, an opening gate leads to transom-mounted steps down to the teak swim platform with a collapsing swim ladder, a traditional and practical aft access arrangement that is perfectly in keeping with the Grand Banks design.
Entering through the starboard cabin door, the pilothouse helm features a captain’s bench seat with a folding footrest and is well equipped with a bow thruster, an autopilot, and a multifunction display. A three-panel windshield fitted with Sunbrella screens and adjustable blinds throughout ensures excellent visibility and precise light control.
Positioned to port, the L-shaped galley is configured for extended cruising, with a refrigerator and drop-in freezer, a three-burner Force 10 electric stove, and a GE convection microwave with air fryer. The dual stainless-steel sink includes a retractable spray wand, while a separate drinking water system with Seagull filtration pairs with attractive Corian countertops. Storage is abundant, including cabinetry above the galley, a small pantry above the freezer, storage beneath the microwave, and an additional locker just forward of the range.
Aft of the helm, the salon is bright and comfortable, anchored by a large L-shaped settee to starboard with a removable folding-leaves table. A bulkhead-mounted brass clock and barometer lend a classic touch, while a separate reclining chair to port adds versatility. A built-in entertainment console houses a Bose stereo and an Alpine radio with CD changer, and a built-in bar with glassware storage is neatly nestled between the helm bench and settee. The helm bench also provides three drawers and compartment storage on both the port and starboard sides.
Down four steps aft from the salon, the primary stateroom is spacious and thoughtfully appointed, with a double berth to starboard and, to port, a large L-shaped built-in desk offering nine drawers and built-in bookshelves. All sliding opening windows are fitted with custom Norman blinds and screens. A large hanging locker is positioned forward, complemented by an additional smaller hanging locker to port. The en suite head to port features a Vacu-flush toilet, a vanity with sink, two lockers, vanity storage, and two drawers, while a separate stall shower to starboard includes a storage locker, towel rack, shower curtain, and an opening screened window. Additional built-in storage and a bench vanity with bookshelf sit to starboard of the berth. Access to the aft deck is via an opening hatch with split doors and a built-in screen, and flooring throughout is a parquet teak sole.
Forward, the companionway descends four steps to the guest stateroom. To port are a storage locker and a hanging locker, and to starboard a wet head offers a Vacu-flush toilet, sink, built-in storage, a large mirror, and a custom Norman blind on an opening screened window. The forward stateroom is private and comfortable, with engine room access beneath the steps, a wide V-berth, two opening screened windows, and an opening overhead hatch with screen.
Exterior brightwork includes varnished teak rails with stainless steel stanchions. At the bow, a separate pulpit with stainless steel rails and dual anchor rollers underscores offshore readiness, while teak accents enrich the superstructure throughout. The foredeck features a built-in storage bench with fender racks and stainless-steel handholds, and the mast is fitted with a tabernacle that allows the air clearance to be lowered from 22.5 ft to only 13 ft.
Salon
The salon welcomes with a parquet teak sole that sets a warm, refined tone. To starboard, an L-shaped settee invites relaxed gatherings around a removable teak table with collapsing leaflets, easily transforming from intimate cocktails to convivial dining. A bar with glass storage keeps stemware and bottles secure and at the ready, while an integrated entertainment center completes this inviting social hub.
Galley
An L-shaped galley up showcases Corian countertops and a dual stainless-steel sink with a Pfister wand faucet, complemented by a Sea-Gull drinking water filter with a separate tap. Culinary capability comes from a three-burner electric Force10 stove and a GE convection microwave with air fry, while cold storage is provided by a Grunert AC cold plate refrigerator and a Grunert AC cold plate freezer, both installed new in 2015 and serviced in 2022. Practical touches include custom built-in dish storage and a Magma rail-mounted grill.
Entertainment equipment
Elevate every moment onboard with a thoughtfully curated entertainment suite featuring a Bose Soundtouch 30 wireless stereo for powerful, immersive sound, complemented by an Alpine TDA-7552 radio and an Alpine CD Shuttle, providing versatile listening options and seamless enjoyment of your favorite music.
Forward stateroom
The forward stateroom features a wide V-berth complemented by an en suite wet head, creating a private and comfortable retreat. To port, a hanging locker offers generous wardrobe space, while two additional storage lockers expand capacity for personal gear. Organization is abundant with six drawers under the berth and additional stowage under the berth, ensuring every item has its place. Natural light and fresh air flow through two opening windows fitted with screens and custom blinds, and an opening overhead hatch enhances ventilation and skyward views.
Aft stateroom
The aft stateroom centers on an island queen bed positioned to starboard, opposite an L-shaped desk to port with integrated storage. Natural light pours through three windows dressed with custom blinds, and ventilation is enhanced by an aft deck hatch with screen. For complete privacy, the suite features an en suite head to port and a separate stall shower to starboard. Thoughtful stowage solutions include six-drawer storage to starboard and two hanging lockers.
Lower helm electronics and navigation equipment
At the lower helm, command is centered around a Furuno Navnet VX2 C-Map NT Max multifunctional display, partnered with a Simrad autopilot for precise course keeping and B&G GPS plus for reliable positioning. Communications and situational awareness are enhanced by the B&G Network VHF and B&G Network Depth, while a Ritchie floating compass provides traditional heading reference. Maneuvering is effortless with the Sleipner Side-Power bow thruster and Trim Tabs, and classic nautical elegance is underscored by a Weems & Plath brass clock and barometer.
Upper helm electronics and navigation equipment
At the upper helm, command is intuitive and redundant thanks to a Furuno Navnet VX2 C-Map NT Max multifunctional display working in concert with a Garmin touchscreen multifunctional display, placing charts and critical data at your fingertips. Confident course-keeping is delivered by the Simrad autopilot, depth readings are supplied by the B&G Network depth, and steady heading reference comes from a Ritchie floating compass. Clear communication and situational awareness are ensured by a Simrad Shipmate RS 8300 VHF marine radio and an Interphase Probe sonar with LCD display, while night operations benefit from a Jabsco searchlight with joystick and signaling is amplified by a SeaHail directional hailer. Leisure meets performance with a JVC KD-SS80 stereo driving Sony exterior speakers, and close-quarters control is refined by a Sleipner Side-Power bow thruster and Trim Tabs.
Deck equipment
Forward, a 45 lb. CQR plow main anchor with all chain teams with a Fortress auxiliary anchor complete with chain rode and line, both managed effortlessly by a Lofrans Tigres electric windlass with foot and helm controls and guided by double anchor rollers. The fiberglass pulpit with teak sole flows into varnished teak rails, stainless steel stanchions, and natural teak decks, creating a full walkaround deck with port and starboard boarding gates for easy movement. A transom gate with teak steps leads to a teak swim platform rebuilt in 2022, complemented by a collapsing swim ladder, while the open aft deck and spacious lazarette enhance both leisure and stowage. Comfort and protection come courtesy of an exterior hot and cold shower, cabin door window covers, an aft stateroom hatch cover with no steps included, and an upper helm cover, alongside a bimini for shade. On the bridge, a teak table with its matching cover invites alfresco moments, joined by an extra-wide captain’s bench on the flybridge and an extra-wide mate’s bench, as well as an extra-wide captain’s bench with cushion at the lower helm. Practicality abounds with a raw water washdown forward, a fresh water washdown in the engine compartment, and a three-panel windshield with center opening fitted with Sunbrella covers new in 2023, serviced by three windshield wipers. Fenders and lines are at the ready, as are Todd lightweight boarding stairs with rail, four teak folding chairs, and two teak folding cocktail tables. Finishing touches include bow and stern varnished flagstaffs, a foredeck storage locker with a matching teak deck lid, and two fender racks on the foredeck, underscoring a deck layout that is as refined as it is seaworthy.
Engine room and mechanical equipment
Powered by twin 300 hp CAT 3116 direct-drive diesel motors showing 3,129 hours to port and 3,131 hours to starboard as of May 15, 2026, with CAT service completed in August 2023, this engine room is configured for confident passagemaking. The powerplants are mated to a CAT MG-5061-A transmission with a 2.47.1 ratio and are supported by SeaStar hydraulic steering, Morse cable gear and throttle controls, and an engine synchronizer for smooth, balanced operation. Precision handling is further assured by a Sleipner Side-Power bow thruster with a dedicated group 27 battery, while Wesmar hydraulic roll fin stabilizers, serviced in November 2022, and Boat Leveler Co. trim tabs refine ride and trim in all conditions. Fuel and lubrication systems are thoughtfully specified with two Racor 900MA units and a Groco U-Lube automatic oil change system, aided by two blowers and two bilge pumps for proper ventilation and dewatering. Comfort aboard is maintained by a three-zone reverse-cycle heat and air-conditioning system delivering 38,000 BTU in total, serviced in 2022. The vessel is equipped with Vacuflush heads with a Type III holding tank monitored by a Tankwatch III system, a 600 gal steel fuel tank with sight glass and new sight glasses in 2022, and a Kuma 20 gal hot water heater. At 12 kn and 1,800 rpm, fuel burn is 6 GPH, and thrust is delivered through five-blade bronze propellers.
Electrical equipment
The yacht’s electrical backbone centers on 120 VAC/12 VDC ship’s power, augmented by an Onan eight-kilowatt diesel generator with soundshield, showing 1,426 hours as of May 15, 2026. Shore connectivity is via 50 A service with a 50 ft cord, and AC inlets are thoughtfully positioned forward and aft. Power conversion and charging are handled by a Magnum Energy MagnaSine inverter/charger, while a Zinc Saver II galvanic isolator safeguards the system. Energy storage comprises two 8D house batteries installed in July 2022, one 4D start battery from July 2022, and one Group 27 genset start battery fitted in September 2022. Practicality is completed with AC and DC plugs.
Safety equipment
For peace of mind at sea, the vessel is equipped with a life ring, two throwable cushions, and PFDs, delivering swift-response flotation and dependable protection for guests and crew alike.

Broker comments
The Grand Banks 42 Classic is one of the most successful and beloved trawler designs ever produced, and Tumbleweed—hull number 1,349 of just 1,560 built—stands among the rarest examples you will find. What sets her apart is her factory-installed Wesmar hydraulic stabilizer package, an uncommon option on the 42 that elevates the already exceptional hull into a genuinely comfortable passage-maker. Loop-capable, bridge-friendly, and equally at home on the Chesapeake or the open coast, it is easy to understand why the Grand Banks 42 has inspired such a devoted following over the decades. TUMBLEWEED is easily seen resting in tide-free, freshwater, covered sheds and is ready for her next chapter. For the buyer who knows what they are looking for, this one is worth a look.
