Detailed Description
Description
ABLE II is a 2006 Hunt Surfhunter 29 Hardtop Express powered by the sought-after Volvo D6 common-rail 350 hp diesel, featuring fly-by-wire throttle and shift and paired to a Volvo Duo Prop stern drive with counter-rotating propellers for crisp, confidence-inspiring handling at speed and remarkably precise docking, allowing the skipper to back in equally well to either side. This propulsion package is also among the most fuel-efficient ways to drive a boat through the water, while the hardtop—a highly desirable option—adds year-round poise and protection. Enjoyed only during light Southern New England summers and showing just 407 engine hours, ABLE II has been kept indoors since new at Burr Brothers Boats in Marion, MA—one of New England’s finest privately owned, full-service yacht yards—so service records are complete, and her history is known to us from our involvement in her original build. Now seriously for sale by only her second owner, she has just been launched and fully sea trialed with all systems go, the engine reaching full and proper RPM, holding temperature, and running to 34 knots at wide-open throttle. Fully serviced, freshly painted on the bottom, topsides waxed, and now with a major price improvement, ABLE II stands out as exceptional value in a well-equipped, beautifully maintained classic Surfhunter 29. Her legendary Hunt Deep-V hull delivers the secure, soft, and predictable ride admired worldwide, especially in the challenging waters we know so well off the SouthCoast in Buzzards Bay and the Nantucket Sounds.
Vessel walkthrough and introduction
Conceived by C. Raymond Hunt & Associates, the Hunt Yachts Surfhunter 29 blends superior below-the-waterline engineering with timeless topside elegance, devouring sporty seas from Buzzards Bay to Cape Hatteras and from San Francisco Bay to the San Juan Islands. Her interior arrangement is thoughtfully planned for relaxed weekend cruising, while the pilothouse is equally well considered, making time underway as effortless as it is enjoyable. This example carries the coveted optional Volvo diesel for longevity, economy, and reliability, together with the highly desirable express hardtop configuration whose side glass panels incorporate forward-facing vent windows that scoop in a generous stream of fresh air while underway.
Hull and deck
Built with a hand-laid, solid E-glass bottom laminate and foam-cored E-glass stringers, the Surfhunter 29 marries strength with quiet refinement. The topsides are foam-cored for stiffness and weight savings, protected by a vinylester osmosis barrier, while the molded interior liner and a painted bilge underscore the builder’s obsession with finish. Stainless steel vents, an extruded vinyl sheer guard, and a molded non-skid pattern add durability and sure footing. A teak swim platform on stainless steel supports with a stainless steel swim ladder completes the transom, while her presentation is unmistakable: a black hull, white gelcoat deck, a gold boot stripe, and black bottom paint. On deck, confidence meets convenience with an anchor windlass and roller installed in 2022, two stainless steel bow chocks, two 8-inch fixed stainless steel cleats at the bow, and four 8-inch pull-up stainless steel cleats at the stern and midships. A custom varnished Bette Fleming teak staff carries the U.S. flag in a stainless steel socket, and a white powder-coated windshield with integrated handrails frames the view. USCG-approved running and anchor lights and cockpit courtesy lighting ensure safety and ambiance. Ventilation and light flow in through a Lewmar cabin hatch with screen, and handling dockside is aided by four Wichard fender pad eyes—two to port and two to starboard—plus stainless steel water, fuel, and waste fills. Fish and cruise with ease thanks to two stainless steel rod holders and two stainless steel stern eyes, while two molded transom lockers with drains, teak coaming boards, a natural teak eyebrow on the coach roof, and a full bow rail round out a deck that is as practical as it is beautiful.
Pilothouse and cockpit layout
The Surfhunter 29 carries the classic New England cuddy-cabin layout: the forward cabin is reached through a varnished teak companionway with a bi-fold teak and Lexan hatch and bi-fold teak louvered doors for natural ventilation. Aft of the helm and navigator pedestal seats, an elevated L-shaped cushioned settee incorporates the forward face of the engine box; its fold-down footrests and a clever removable padded bolster provide a supportive backrest for the navigator when facing forward and a comfortable armrest when facing inboard. Across the transom, a full-width, forward-facing cushioned convertible settee—three sections with an easily removable center—meets an aft-facing seat atop the engine box to create a sociable, flexible cockpit. Practicality is baked in with a self-bailing cockpit and guttered hatches, an XR helm chair with lifting bolster, and a reinforced hardtop carrying a powder-coated radar pod. Side and aft panels in clear Eisenglass pair with a fixed glass windshield and side windows with opening vents, while a navigator’s dash glove box keeps essentials at hand. Heavy marine-grade tan vinyl upholstery wears beautifully, under-gunnel rod storage runs port and starboard, and a custom varnished teak cockpit table with padded cover removes when it’s time to fish. At night, four LED cockpit courtesy lights set the mood, and at day’s end, a hot-and-cold pressure shower on the transom refreshes. Stamoid covers protect the transom settee and the teak companionway. The helm, to starboard, offers superb sightlines standing or seated in the XR chair with flip-up bolster. Controls fall easily to hand in a logical layout, and the electrical breaker panel sits outboard of the helm seat. A fiberglass helm console trimmed with varnished teak—shelf, handholds, edging, and fiddles—anchors the station, complemented by a 12V cigarette-style outlet at the helm, a custom mahogany steering wheel, and a teak instrument cluster.
Navigation / electronics equipment
All electronics are cleanly flush-mounted in the helm console for optimal visibility and reach. A Raymarine E120 12-inch color multifunction display teams with a Raymarine 2 kW radar, while an ICOM M504 DSC VHF radio keeps communications clear. Trim tab actuator control with indicator, a SIMRAD autopilot, and a Ritchie magnetic compass with a cover bearing the Hunt logo round out the navigation suite. Entertainment is by Clarion with AM/FM/CD, a remote at the helm, and an auxiliary input tucked into the glove box, driving two cockpit speakers and two interior speakers.
Accommodations below
Through the forward folding cuddy companionway lies a bright, inviting cabin finished in white gelcoat with satin-varnished cherry trim. Designed for two, it features a generous V-berth with filler, self-piped cushions upholstered in off-white Sunbrella, a full galley to port, and a spacious ensuite head and shower to starboard. Natural airflow abounds via an opening overhead hatch with screen and four screened opening portholes. The faux teak-and-holly sole, tan interior fabrics with blue piping, satin cherry joinery, multiple 12V overhead dome lights, and Ocean Frigast 12V bulkhead-mounted reading lights create a warm, tailored ambiance. Storage is everywhere: under the berth, outboard in padded coaming bolsters, along a wraparound shelf with varnished cherry fiddle, and even integrated as two stereo speakers for entertainment. The head to starboard is a true stand-up space with a large Corian vanity, abundant lockers, and an opening screened port. Remarkably generous for a boat this size, it offers room to change and to shower, aided by a solar-powered ventilator for continuous passive airflow. The telescoping fixture at the sink hangs neatly on the bulkhead, and with a removable shower curtain the compartment converts easily to a proper shower. A molded nonskid shower pan wipes clean and drains to an automatic sump pump, new in 2025. A saltwater push-button marine head, a mirror on the forward bulkhead, and storage outboard and beneath the sink complete the space. To port, the galley at the base of the companionway serves weekend cruising perfectly with a single-burner butane cooktop under a tempered glass cover, a deep single stainless steel sink, Corian countertops with fiddles, a 110V GFCI outlet, a Norcold 12V/110V refrigerator, hot-and-cold pressure water, a microwave oven, two lockers flanking the microwave, a handy shelf above, and a locker beneath the sink with space for a trash bin.
Electrical system
Power is straightforward and dependable. The 12-volt DC system includes two 12-volt AGM Group 31 batteries with selector and parallel switches and a 12-volt distribution panel with breakers plus volt and amp meters. Shore power is handled by a 110-volt AC system with a 30-amp service inlet and a 50 ft power cord feeding a 10-amp automatic battery charger, while a 12V utility outlet at the helm keeps devices topped up underway.
Mechanical/engine details
Performance and control come from a 2008 Volvo D-6 common-rail, electronically controlled 350 hp diesel turning a Volvo Duo-prop stern drive via a steel jackshaft, with two counter-rotating stainless steel three-bladed props putting down efficient, decisive thrust. Command is precise with a Volvo single-lever control and Volvo EVC helm-mounted electronic control unit, complemented by hydraulic steering, trim tabs with position indicator, and a SidePower electric bow thruster. Reliability-minded details include a custom thru-hull and strainer for raw-water engine intake (not through the stern drive), a fuel filter/water separator, and full instrumentation: tachometer with engine-hours gauge plus fuel, oil pressure, water temperature, voltage, and outdrive trim. Capacity and comfort are assured by two 75-gallon poly-molded fuel tanks with stainless steel deck fills, a 28-gallon poly-molded water tank with stainless steel deck fill, and a 15-gallon holding tank with an overboard macerator pump and gauge. Freshwater is pressurized, and hot water comes via a heater energized both by the engine and by shore power.
Additional equipment
Thoughtful additions include a stern-mounted varnished teak staff with a flush socket, running lights, and a fire extinguisher. Bilge management is robust with an automatic 1100 GPH aft pump and a 750 GPH forward pump, backed by a high-water bilge alarm. An AFI 12V electric air horn ensures your presence is heard when conditions demand.
