Detailed Description
Description
KATYDID is a shining example of the Island Packet 350, delivering an unparalleled blend of practical cruising features, true liveaboard comfort, and confident offshore performance. Fastidiously maintained throughout her life, she presents with the kind of care discerning sailors notice at once, right down to her full canvas winter cover that safeguards the yacht through every season.
Overview
Step below and the sense of space is immediate: the salon opens wide thanks to a dining table that folds neatly against the forward bulkhead. Unlatched, it reveals a bottle rack and clever small‑item stowage, then folds down with a generous leaf to serve both port and starboard settees with ease. The L‑shaped starboard settee pulls out into a double berth while the port settee serves as a single, bringing total sleeping capacity to seven. Both settees are upholstered in off‑white Ultraleather in condition close to new, with abundant storage behind and beneath. Daylight and airflow are excellent, provided by four opening ports and a large overhead hatch, and for offshore security there are two overhead teak handrails.
Aft to starboard the yacht’s aft‑facing nav station awaits, complete with a proper chart table, the full suite of 12‑volt and 120‑volt breaker panels, and dedicated electronics. Just aft of the salon to starboard at the base of the companionway, the U‑shaped galley is designed for seaway cooking: off‑white Formica countertops are wrapped by solid teak sea rails on all open edges; a large 14 cubic foot top‑load ice box/refrigerator with lift‑out shelf and an electric sump drain keeps provisions shipshape; a gimballed stainless‑steel LPG stove with two burners and oven stands ready for passage meals; a large double‑bowl stainless‑steel sink handles the clean‑up with hot‑and‑cold pressure water and a back‑up cold‑water hand pump. A tip‑out trash bin disappears neatly, while storage above and below includes a designated dish rack and cutlery drawers.
Access to the aft cabin is to port of the companionway, where a large double berth is paired with a full‑length outboard teak shelf and lockers beneath. A cedar‑lined hanging locker, a bureau with a shelf over, two opening ports, and a small overhead hatch complete this private retreat. Forward and to starboard, the head features a vanity with storage beneath, a contoured off‑white countertop with teak fiddle (no sharp corners underway), and a stainless‑steel sink; the centrally located electric Eco‑Vac toilet by Sealand and a dedicated teak shower seat underscore the thoughtful design. Just forward lies the owner’s stateroom: a Pullman‑style berth to starboard, a small seat, and full‑length shelves run outboard on both sides; to port are a bureau with shelved storage and a large cedar‑lined hanging locker. Ventilation is superb with three opening ports and a large overhead hatch, and there is a private access door directly to the head. Engine access is exemplary: a removable teak box beneath the companionway steps opens the front of the engine, while panels beneath the aft berth reach the aft end, shaft, and stuffing box. The finish throughout is warm and traditional, with beautifully crafted teak everywhere and a classic teak‑and‑holly cabin sole, while the base of the companionway, galley, and head are finished in molded fiberglass with a diamond anti‑skid pattern for secure footing.
Below the waterline and beyond, the Island Packet hallmark is unmistakable. The time‑proven, trademark Full Foil Keel yields a moderate draft for her length, unlocking expanded cruising grounds while integrating the hull and keel as a singular, stronger structure. The airfoil keel section boosts upwind performance, and the modern hull form enhances speed and maneuverability. The transom incorporates a molded‑in swim platform. Construction is resolutely robust: the hull is 100% hand‑laid triaxial woven fiberglass with ISO/NPG‑type gelcoat and no coring; the deck is built using a PolyCore microsphere‑and‑resin matrix and is specified as “Polycel” cored microsphere/resin in the deck schedule.
On deck, the cockpit is large and seakindly, with contoured seating up to seven and a half feet and a separate raised helm seat with a padded backrest. Stowage is generous, with two large lockers and a separate insulated cockpit icebox. The two‑tone deck carries a molded diamond‑patterned, slip‑resistant surface; side decks are wide, with raised bulwarks that increase in height forward. The starboard side deck houses a molded propane locker sized for two tanks, and the anchor locker is accessed via a Lewmar hatch. Hardware and fittings are comprehensive: a double stainless‑steel bow pulpit; a split double stainless stern rail with integral seats; lifelines with port and starboard boarding gates; a stern gate; and a folding stainless‑steel swim ladder. Ground tackle handling is first‑class with double anchor rollers on the anchor platform and a Lofrans electric windlass with controls at both the bow and cockpit. Heavy‑duty deck cleats include two twelve‑inch cleats at the bow, two twelve‑inch at the stern, and two ten‑inch spring cleats. The pedestal carries a stainless guard, compass, instruments, and GPS; Whitlock rack‑and‑pinion steering drives a stainless “destroyer” wheel with a wheel brake, and an emergency tiller stands ready. Tender handling is effortless with folding davits by Kato Marine featuring stainless support straps and a spreader bar, plus a Garhauer outboard motor lift. A folding cockpit table serves al fresco dining. Ventilation is exceptional with eleven opening stainless‑steel ports, five Lewmar hatches, and three stainless‑steel dorades with guards.
The electronics are extensive and intelligently distributed. In the cockpit: a Standard Horizon Matrix AIS+ GX 2150 VHF; B&G Network knot, depth, and wind pods mounted at the helm; a Garmin GHC 20 autopilot control head driving a below‑deck electric ram; a Richie PowerDamp compass; a Garmin GPSMAP 546 chartplotter; and a Furuno 36‑mile radar with bulkhead‑mounted display and a dome on a Questas gimbaled backstay mount. An iPad mount on the pedestal expands navigation options. At the nav station: a Standard Horizon GX2000 VHF; an ICOM IC‑M710 SSB with ICOM AT‑130 automatic antenna tuner, insulated backstay, and grounding plate; a B&G Network data repeater; a Garmin 176C chartplotter; and an Alpine stereo/CD with speakers inside and out.
Electrical systems are equally complete. The 12‑volt side includes a main disconnect switch; a breaker panel with volt and amp meters; a Bogart Engineering Tri‑Metric TM‑2030‑A battery monitor; a battery test switch; an engine hour meter; a propane solenoid; Frigoboat refrigeration with a keel‑cooled compressor; bilge and fresh‑water pumps; a shower/icebox sump pump; running, mast steaming, and anchor lights; a foredeck light; interior and courtesy lights; a Zantrex Link 2000‑R battery monitor; a Lofrans windlass feed; an LPG remote solenoid; six Group 31 AGM batteries; a Balmar 110‑amp high‑output alternator; and fans for comfort. The 120‑volt system features two 30‑amp shore‑power inlets with covers, two fifty‑foot thirty‑amp power cords, two 30‑amp main breakers at the inlets, a 120‑volt breaker panel with volt meter, a six‑gallon water heater, a battery charger, six GFI‑protected 120‑volt outlets, an Origo microwave oven, and Marine Air 16,000 BTU air conditioning and heat.
Plumbing is straightforward and robust: a hot‑and‑cold fresh‑water system, a cold‑water cockpit shower, an electric fresh‑water pump augmented by a manual cold‑water hand pump, and an electric marine head (EcoVac by Sealand). Tankage is generous and corrosion‑resistant, with a 100‑gallon welded aluminum fresh‑water tank, a 30‑gallon fiberglass holding tank with Y‑valve, and a 50‑gallon welded aluminum fuel tank. Both electric and manual bilge pumps are fitted, and the galley’s stainless stove is supplied by an aluminum propane tank with proper marine‑grade plumbing.
Sail handling and spars reflect Island Packet’s cutter heritage. The keel‑stepped anodized aluminum mast pairs with an anodized aluminum boom that carries internal single‑line reefing, a single spreader, and a full double backstay. A Dutchman system and boom vang simplify the main; headsails run on Harken furlers for both the genoa and the staysail, the latter on a self‑tacking anodized aluminum Hoyt boom. Winch power is abundant: two Lewmar 44 CST two‑speed primaries, one Lewmar 40 CST serving the mainsheet and main halyard, one Lewmar 30 CST for single‑line reefing, and a Lewmar 16C two‑speed for the jib halyard on the mast, with winch handles at the ready. The mainsheet traveler is mounted forward of the dodger, with mid‑boom sheeting, and the genoa tracks and cars are mounted on the cap rail. The sail wardrobe includes a full‑batten mainsail with the Dutchman system and single‑line reefing, a 130% furling genoa, and a furling staysail on the self‑tacking Hoyt boom. For protection and shade, the canvas suite is complete: a Sunbrella dodger with stainless‑steel side and aft grab rails, a Sunbrella bimini with a matching connecting panel, Sunbrella cockpit cushions with four‑inch foam, and a full winter cover.
