Detailed Description

Vessel Walk Through and Improvements Description

The CABOCHON has recently undergone a comprehensive refit, leaving no detail overlooked. With a fresh coat of Awlgrip paint on the hull and a thorough inspection and overhaul of all systems, she is primed and ready for immediate cruising. This year, the vessel received a new paint job, complementing an earlier exterior refit that included the superstructure, davits, mast, boom, and spreaders, as well as the repair and painting of all hatches. The result is a yacht that feels brand new, with updated exterior paint, rigging, electronics, entertainment systems, and soft goods both inside and out. Mechanical services, air conditioning, hydraulic systems, helm station controls, exterior canvas, and the tender have all been refreshed.

CABOCHON is US duty paid, MECAL approved, and has been recently registered for commercial use, making her eligible for a charter program, although she has not been chartered yet. Her striking presence is sure to turn heads wherever she sails, and she is currently available at an exceptional value. Designed by Ted Hood and Ted Fontaine for an experienced yachtsman, CABOCHON boasts robust construction and world-class features. Her attention to detail is evident in her practical engineering, redundant systems, and beautifully crafted teak joinery with dovetailed drawers. She combines desirable features such as a shoal draft (6'6" with the board up and 18' with the board down), impressive performance under sail, and exceptional comfort at sea, all in one stunning vessel.

The accommodations on CABOCHON are designed for six adults and two children in the owner's party, with three spacious private staterooms located aft. The split-level dining and lounge areas are situated amidships, while two en-suite cabins forward of the galley are reserved for the crew. The interior features finely crafted Euro-style teak joinery with a gloss varnish finish. A major interior refit in 2019 included new soft goods, lighting fixtures, a satellite TV system with TVs, a Wi-Fi system, a Sonos audio system, carpeting throughout, and updated head fixtures.

The pilothouse, originally designed for inclement weather, has become the hub of activity aboard CABOCHON. It is light and airy, offering excellent visibility. To port, a U-shaped settee and teak table provide seating for six, perfect for informal meals, cocktails, or planning the day's activities. To starboard and forward, the navigation area is equipped with throttle and autopilot control, complete with all necessary electronics, a nav table, and a helmsman's seat. Aft of the navigation area, a wet bar and coffee machine add to the amenities.

The master stateroom, accessed from the pilothouse via full-sized stairs and a hallway, features a king and a queen-sized berth, a makeup area, two cedar-lined hanging lockers, ample storage space, and his and hers bathrooms. The port head includes a bathtub, while the starboard head has an enclosed shower. Ventilation is provided by opening portholes, and additional natural light comes from deck prisms. Entertainment is provided by an LCD TV with high-definition satellite and a Sonos system. A centerline vestibule leads to a private aft cockpit.

Two guest staterooms, each with an en-suite head and stall shower, are located forward of the master stateroom and separated by a passageway. Both guest staterooms have two twin beds and fold-away Pullman berths for children. The twin beds can be converted to single queens with fillers. Each cabin includes cedar-lined hanging lockers, ample storage space, two opening portholes for ventilation, and deck prisms for natural light. Entertainment is provided by LCD TVs with high-definition satellite and Sonos systems.

The full-beam main salon is open to the pilothouse salon, with pilothouse windows extending over 50 percent of the salon. Two hatches provide abundant natural light. To starboard, a dining area accommodates eight, while to port, an L-shaped couch with a coffee table and a 40" LCD TV with high-definition satellite, DVD, and Sonos system offer relaxation. Additional features include ample dry storage, a built-in wine rack, refrigerator, and ice maker.

Forward of the main salon, a sliding teak door and a watertight MCA door lead to a large, U-shaped galley and crew mess. The fully equipped galley features a large hatch for light and fresh air, making the use of the new air conditioning system optional. Multiple freezer compartments support long-distance adventuring. The galley is equipped with a Broadwater 4-burner propane stove and oven, a KitchenAid cooktop, a KitchenAid microwave oven, a KitchenAid dishwasher, a KitchenAid trash compactor, a Sub Zero vertical refrigerator, Sub Zero freezer drawers, and additional freezer compartments. The galley also includes miscellaneous small appliances, an extractor fan and lighting over the stove, double stainless-steel sinks with a retractable faucet, Corian countertops, and cork flooring with full carpet.

Crew accommodations include two double crew cabins located forward of the galley, each with its own sink and toilet and sharing a centrally located shower. The crew mess is equipped with an entertainment center, including an LCD TV with high-definition satellite and Sonos. A Miele washer and dryer are conveniently located beside the crew mess.

The cockpit, located aft of the pilothouse, can be fully enclosed and protected from the elements with a rigid bimini top, isinglass side curtains, and a dodger. A U-shaped seating area to port with a teak table is perfect for cocktails or on-deck dining, while an L-shaped seating area with an additional teak table is located to starboard. Blue cushions with white piping complement the "Whisper Gray" Awlgrip house. The cockpit features a top-loading refrigerator and cabinet space. Aft of the cockpit is the raised helm area, with a U-shaped settee surrounding the 4.5-foot wheel and pedestal, which accommodates navigational instruments, compass, engine controls, and toggle controls for easy command and control of all sail handling. CABOCHON can be sailed by just one person without leaving the helm. The helm station was completely redesigned and rebuilt in 2019, including a new engraved black face helm panel, new engine controls, new MFDs, new generator start/stop controls, new engine and generator gauges, new navigational electronics and wind instruments, new PTO controls, new hydraulic shut down controls, new anchor windlass remotes, and new sail handling remotes. The aft deck features a private owners' cockpit and a hydraulic swim platform for easy access to and from the water.

CABOCHON is equipped with all new navigation and communications equipment, including B&G Zeus MFD Radar, Chart Plotter, GPS, AIS units, B&G open array digital radar scanners, B&G VHF radios with DSC, B&G Depth, Wind, Speed, sailing instruments, B&G Hydra autopilot, Navtex NX-300 receiver, Sat Com, Iridium GO, phone and data, Thrane & Thrane TT-3020C with GPS, high-definition satellite TV, Sonos stereo system, Weather Station Oceans Sea Station 2000 Micro, Weather Fax, and EPIRB ACR Global Fix 406 Category 1.

The ship's hydraulics are an integrated system designed by Maxpower, powered by a Maxpower DC-pump or two Rexroth Genset driven PTOs. The entire system was rebuilt in 2019, including a new centerboard ram, hydraulic manifold, and all hoses. The backstay hydraulics were overhauled, and the centerboard hydraulic ram was replaced.

Deck equipment includes a polished stainless steel CQR anchor with galvanized all chain rode, a polished stainless steel Delta anchor with re-galvanized all chain rode, a Fortress anchor, Muir hydraulic windlasses, Solimar flush hatches with solid teak rims, teak decks, teak bow and stern seats, dinghy lift aluminum davits with hydraulic function, Spectra line for davits, hydraulic stern stairs and teak boarding platform, a hot and cold shower at the stairs, deck prisms, a sturdy, rigid bimini, dodger and connective piece, a Viking 8-person Solas life raft, a full list of safety gear, chocks on the foredeck for the dinghy, tender chocks and a custom lifting system for on-deck storage, a new fire alarm system, fire extinguishers, and life lines.

The entertainment system includes a 40" LCD in the salon, a 30" LCD in the master stateroom, a 24" LCD in the crew mess, a high-definition satellite TV system, a Wi-Fi system, a Sonos audio system, surround sound in the salon with additional speakers in the pilothouse, cockpit, and aft cockpit, and a separate system in the master stateroom.

The electrical system features two Northern Lights generators, Mastervolt batteries, a Mastervolt charging system, a 300A Electrodyne alternator, 220-volt single phase shore power with transformer, a cable master to store a 90' cable, a 4 kW inverter for the house bank, and a 2.5 kW Mastervolt inverter for the nav station.

The hull is constructed with composite material and a sandwich structure using Core-cell foam core, with additional layers of Kevlar for extra strength. The deck and pilothouse are also sandwich construction with E-glass. The centerboard configuration offers a minimum draft of 6'6" with the board up and a maximum draft of 18' with the board down. The hull features a "Midnight Blue" Awlgrip finish with varnished teak exterior trim, "Light Gray" Awlgrip nonskid, and a "Whisper Gray" Awlgrip house. Additional features include an integral rub rail with a stainless-steel striker, watertight bulkheads, and a new teak cap rail with multiple coats of varnish.

The engine and mechanical equipment include a John Deere 6-cylinder engine, a Maxprop propeller, a Max Power bow thruster, a chilled water Marine Air air conditioning system, a fire suppression system in the engine room, an Eberspacher diesel heater system, Sea Recovery water makers, Isotherm water heaters, fresh water pumps, a fuel polishing system, a fuel shut off system, and a shaft seal. The tender is a Highfield 13' center console inflatable hard bottom with a Yamaha outboard engine.

CABOCHON is designed for easy sailing with "big boat" systems such as captive winches and hydraulic furling, allowing all sails to be deployed, trimmed, and furled by one person from the helm pedestal. The rig was pulled and fully inspected, and all rigging was removed and inspected. The mast is a Lorima Carbon Fiber with four spreaders and in-mast furling, painted in "Whisper Gray" Awlgrip. The rigging includes Navtec rigging and hydraulics, backstay hydraulic cylinders, a hydraulic boom vang, rod rigging, a mast partner with Spartite, and Spectra running rigging.

The sails include a North mainsail, a North staysail, a North genoa, a two-ply Storm Orange Dacron storm, and a two-ply Storm Orange Dacron trysail. The captive winches are Nielson (Harken) for genoa and staysail sheets, with Magic Trim for the mainsheet and in the boom for the outhaul. The deck winches are Harken 3-speed for MPS/running backstay, Harken 2-speed for halyard/mast, and a Harken foredeck winch. The furling gear is state-of-the-art, ensuring smooth and efficient sail handling.
