Overview
This Viking Convertible showcases the desirable open, single-stateroom Plan A layout, kept to impeccable yacht standards with thoughtful upgrades throughout. Arguably the finest 38-footer on the market, she stands out in the sportfish convertible class and is a must-see for discerning buyers. All major service and refit work completed at Merritt’s Shipyard, underscoring her pedigree and care.
No expense was spared on recent comprehensive overhauls of both Detroit Diesel engines, performed by RPM Diesel (Authorized Detroit Diesel) with extensive records. She cruises effortlessly at 19–21 kts while sipping a combined 30 gph, complemented by significant Garmin electronics upgrades. A polished flybridge sportfisherman built for offshore, bluewater, tournament-ready cruising and sportfishing.
Detailed Description
Vessel accommodations and equipment
Pigal features a Plan “A” layout that opens up the interior with an airy, generous sense of volume, imparting the feel of a much larger vessel. Forward, the single master stateroom presents a centerline queen berth with drawer storage beneath and an en suite head to port, complete with a stall shower. Amidships, the large convertible U-shaped dinette transforms into a berth to sleep two, while the salon sofa conceals a built‑in fold‑out twin bed to sleep one. Throughout, the interior is finished in top‑quality teak with the superior joinery for which Viking is renowned.
Salon
Factory Hunter‑Douglas blinds and fabric lambrequins dress the salon windows, while the carpet—kept in excellent condition—has custom‑bound edges for quick removal when engine service calls. Elegantly practical touches include matching carpet runners for the salon, hallway, and master stateroom, and a starboard L‑shaped sofa with abundant storage below and a fold‑out twin bed aft. Entertainment is centralized with a TV, VCR, DVD, and over‑the‑air antenna, and an electrical panel with a breakfast bar thoughtfully defines the transition to the portside galley.
Galley
Set a single step down from the salon, the mid‑level galley is poised for effortless service, with a large starboard U‑shaped dinette that converts to a bed to sleep two. Cooking and provisioning are handled with confidence by the Princess two‑burner stove, a Kenmore convection/microwave oven, and a Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer.
Master stateroom
The forward master stateroom centers on a queen berth on centerline with drawer storage beneath, flanked by portside storage lockers and a starboard cedar‑lined hanging closet. A built‑in TV and DVD reside to starboard, while a private portside entrance to the head underscores the suite‑like privacy. Independent air conditioning ensures personalized climate control.
Head
Accessible from the companionway or directly from the forward stateroom, the head to port features a vanity with a molded one‑piece top and sink, complemented by a mirrored medicine cabinet. Aft, a separate stall shower with folding door and a Vac‑U‑Flush head deliver clean, efficient functionality.
Electronics and navigation
Command comes easy with Horizon VHF sets in both tower and bridge, an ARC‑EPIRB (needs service), and an ARC spotlight. The Simrad AP 11 autopilot pairs with a Furuno 48‑mile radar and a Furuno F582 color sounder for confident piloting. A suite of new 2020 upgrades elevates the helm: Garmin 8612 on the bridge, Garmin 942+ on the bridge, Garmin 742+ in the tower, a Garmin GSD 25 sounder, the Garmin GMS 10 network hub, and a Garmin GT30‑TH thru‑hull transducer pair (SideVu, DownVu, CHIRP). Audio and entertainment are enhanced by a Fusion RA70NSX and a Shakespeare 3019 Seawatch TV antenna. For awareness, cameras monitor the salon (IR RCA), engine room (IR RCA), and cockpit (Garmin GC 100, new 2020). All Garmin MFDs, the GSD25 sounder, Fusion, radio, and cockpit camera have been networked together, with the Simrod AP 11 also networked to the Garmin MFDs.
Hull equipment
Purposeful deck and hull outfitting includes anchor and navigation lights and a full Coast Guard safety package. A liferaft canister and mount are in place (no liferaft), with bridge courtesy lights and a dockside water hookup complementing the bow pulpit and rail. Ground tackle is anchored by a Bruce anchor with new chain and rode in 2023, supported by a remote‑controlled Ideal windlass rebuilt by Ideal in 2023. The tuna tower offers seating for three, engine controls, and a 3‑inch compass, with an ARC RCL‑100 remote‑controlled spotlight replaced with new in 2022. A fixed cockpit sunshade shelters a cockpit laid out for action with a tackle center, sink, livewell, and a custom in‑deck lift outfish box, plus fresh‑ and saltwater washdowns. The helm area features two Pompanette P‑2000 helm chairs, while the cockpit is equipped with a transom door and gate, six rod holders in the covering boards, and a Pompanette rocket launcher installed new in 2021.
Electrical
Power systems center on an 8kW Onan generator with 1500 total (minor overhaul 2020) inside a sound shield, supported by a 12 Volt DC architecture and a Glendinning Cablemaster with a 50 amp shore cord. Battery management includes isolator switches, a Sentry 125 Volt, 60 amp battery charger replaced new in 2021, and three 12 Volt batteries in boxes replaced in 2022, with a salon battery voltage monitor for at‑a‑glance status.
Engine room
The machinery spaces are comprehensively appointed with bilge blowers, an oil change system, and a Glendinning engine synchronizer. Seacocks with screens and emergency bailout valves were serviced/replaced by Merritt’s in 2023, while Walker Airseps and a Fireboy Halon 1301 fire system protect performance and safety. Fuel management is robust with Racor fuel filters and pressure gauges, a Floscan fuel flow meters control system, remote‑mounted oil filters, and remote‑mounted secondary fuel filters. Handling is precise thanks to Boat Leveler trim tabs with a new hydraulic pump and lines (work by Merritt’s in 2022), Hynautic steering with a new pump, lines, and ram in 2020, and Morse dual‑lever controls on the flybridge and in the cockpit. Climate is assured by Cruisair reverse‑cycle air conditioning with SMX controls (8K BTU in the master stateroom and 12K BTU in the salon). Additional equipment includes emergency engine stops, a hot water heater, horns, two automatic bilge pumps, a holding tank with deck pumpout and connections, and an overboard discharge with Y‑valve, plus a transom boarding latter. Driveline confidence comes from Twin Disc transmissions, with the starboard unit completely rebuilt by Twin Disc, six new Lumitec engine room lights, a completely new generator exhaust system by Merritt’s, shafts and props pulled and dialed in by Merritt’s in 2020, and new cutlass bearings and dripless shaft seals by Merritt’s. There are less than 200 hours on major overhaul’s RPM diesel (all receipts).
