Detailed Description
General overview
This Bertram 31' Express Cruiser underwent a comprehensive rebuild in Stuart, Florida from 2025 to 2026, leaving the hull structure as the only original element and rendering the balance effectively new. JOY RIDE is now powered by twin 350hp Yamaha outboards with digital electric steering mounted on a bracket, complemented by a Seakeeper DC-powered gyro stabilizer, new fuel tanks totaling 400 gallons, Garmin electronics, and custom Blue Water teak helm and companion chairs. An inverter system runs 110V items and 12V cabin air-conditioning ensures onboard comfort, while a custom hardtop with weather enclosure, bow thruster, windlass, transom live well, and refrigerated drink box complete a specification in which virtually everything is unused. The motors carry five years of warranty. This work was performed by a retired boat builder who had previously refitted numerous 31' Bertrams. Photos tell only part of the story; personal inspections are available.
Features
All of this equipment is new for 2025-2026, elevating performance, comfort, and fishability. A Seakeeper 2 gyro stabilizer with display panel at the helm pairs with the Seakeeper Ride auto-adjusting trim tab system and a Vetus bow thruster for exceptional control. The profile is refined by a custom fiberglass hardtop with aluminum support by High Seas and an aluminum bow rail by High Seas, while Rupp Z-90 Top Gun radial outriggers with painted-white carbon fiber poles and an Armstrong transom bracket with swim ladder underscore serious offshore intent. A polycarbonate three-sided bridge enclosure by G&G Canvas, with opening top vents and a center U-zip, shelters two custom-sized teak Blue Water helm chairs with footrests, fold-up bolster seats, and armrests, complemented by a Blue Water teak rocket launcher with four rod holders, two drink holders, a rigging tray/drawer, and cover. A faux teak helm console and toe rail, aluminum safety railings inboard of the helm seats, an Edson polished stainless helm wheel with speed knob, and Bocatech switches for exterior equipment at the helm complete the command center.
Ground tackle is premium-grade, with a Maxwell electric windlass featuring a helm remote control and foot switches on the foredeck, a stainless steel anchor chute, and an Ultra stainless anchor with chain lead and nylon rode, all serviced by a top-opening anchor locker that drains overboard. Fish-ready amenities include a 40-gallon transom live bait well with clear locking lid, two insulated under-deck fish boxes approximately five feet each with fish box macerators, and two Lumitec SeaBlaze underwater LED lights. A 12V refrigerator drink box by Gulfstream Marine that can be set to freezer keeps provisions perfect, and an auto raise/lower VHF antenna simplifies deployment.
Sophisticated electronics center on Garmin systems with two 10-inch MFD displays integrating GPS, chart plotter, depth, and radar, a Garmin 12 kW open-array radar with a four-foot scanner, a B275LHW transducer, and autopilot within the Yamaha Digital Electric Steering (DES). Communications and entertainment are assured by a Standard Horizon VHF radio, a Fusion MS-RA60 Stereo with Bluetooth, and JL Audio speakers—two on the helm deck and two inside the cabin.
Robust ship’s power comes from a Victron Energy Multi-plus inverter with a digital control panel in the cabin, a Victron Energy Phoenix smart battery charger, a 30-amp shore power inlet with shore cord, four Odyssey House Batteries (AGM 470 FTT) and two Odyssey Start Batteries (AGM 31) with a parallel switch, Blue Sea battery switches and relays, and a Blue Sea Electrical circuit breaker panel with battery condition and voltage meters, supported by three USB charging ports. Climate and lighting are equally refined, with Mabru 12,000 BTU 12V air-conditioning ducted into the berth area and head, Lumitec LED lighting including a multi-color option under the hardtop, and LED cockpit spreader lights molded into the aft hardtop.
The interior and conveniences include an electric freshwater head, polished stainless steel sinks and faucets, a Toshiba microwave oven that runs through the inverter when away from shore power, a hot water heater that runs via inverter, 110V outlets, a berth area with filler cushion, two cedar-lined hanging lockers near the berth, and a Kidde smoke/CO2 detector. Deck and cockpit utility are maximized with a saltwater washdown spigot in the cockpit with hose and nozzle, a freshwater washdown spigot, six flush-mount rod holders in the cockpit, two clear-out rod holders on each rear hardtop support, electric reel plug outlets, side cockpit storage cabinets, a cockpit flag mast, and a canvas cockpit shade with stand poles that fit into rod holders. Finishing touches include all Gemlux stainless hardware with pop-up cleats and hawsers, two Ultra Safety float switches and a high water alarm, two Rule 2000 gph bilge pumps, a freshwater auto-flush system for the outboards, and canvas covers for the helm chairs, helm pod, and engines in blue Sunbrella.
Hull and deck
The Ice Blue hull with dark blue bottom paint makes a striking statement, set off by a white rub rail capped with a solid polished stainless steel strike insert. White Yamaha motors wear custom-painted top cowlings to match the hull, while the topsides are finished in Cloud White with non-skid decks. At the helm, blue and white custom cushions and armrest pads enhance the seats for comfort and style. The cockpit is thoughtfully engineered with hose drains on all hatch gutters and chrome drain grills on the corner scuppers. Below, the cabin features a Teak & Holly sole, varnished teak trims, and teak hull cladding in the berth area; the berth includes a filler cushion with storage beneath. The cabin settee offers additional stowage both beneath the bench and behind the backrest, and a rectangular varnished teak table with a spill edge and two drink holders anchors the space. Dark-tinted cabin windows complete the refined, functional ambiance.
