Chip-Chip

Chip-Chip is a Great Dane 28—full keel, transom-hung rudder, masthead sloop—renowned as a classic sailing yacht and true bluewater pocket cruiser. She is among the most widely traveled and recognized Great Dane 28s afloat, admired for her graceful lines, offshore pedigree, and confident manners at sea.

Her hull number is 138 and sail number is D138.

Over the past five years she has covered roughly 10,000 miles with her prior owners, a Swedish family of four. The design delivers remarkable seakeeping on a compact yet generous platform, making her an ideal offshore sailboat, ocean-going monohull, and capable coastal cruiser. In this listing you’ll find candid images from their voyage alongside recent photos.

Now under new stewardship, Chip-Chip has been thoughtfully revived after approximately 24 months ashore and is offered in ready-to-cruise condition. Step aboard for your own long-range adventure or enjoy her as an elegant weekender and comfortable liveaboard-capable cruiser.

Currently on the hard in St. Marys, Georgia—an exceptional launch point for an Atlantic crossing or an easy run down to the Bahamas—Chip-Chip invites confident passagemaking and refined daysailing alike.

Detailed Description

Overview

A heartfelt reason for selling from the current owner sets the tone for Chip-Chip’s next chapter. Drawn to her bones and history, he discovered a yacht that looked weary from cruising yet revealed, on closer inspection, a remarkably eager and well-built spirit. “I knew I had to save Chip-Chip,” he shares, and after careful tinkering and fixing, she once again presents herself as a capable, characterful cruiser ready for blue water. With his part of the story complete, he’s passing her on to be loved, sailed, and enjoyed by the next custodian.

Technically, Chip-Chip is wired for European shore power; however, when the previous owner rewired her, the entire vessel was set up to run on 12 V. The only system not on 12 V is the battery charger, which is unnecessary with adequate sunlight; it can still be used with a simple European-to-USA converter readily available on Amazon. A portable AC unit added by the current owner can be included with the sale if desired and requires 110 V to operate.

Her equipment suite is impressively comprehensive for independent, long-distance cruising: 200 W of solar feeding a lithium house battery via Bluetooth-enabled Victron solar controllers, complemented by a Group 27 AGM starting battery; a large windvane for reliable self-steering offshore; a Volvo MD2B diesel with transmission rebuilt by the previous owner in 2018, supported by a generous cache of spare parts; a 50 L fuel tank; fresh bottom paint and fresh semi-gloss white interior paint that’s easy to clean; exterior teak renewed with doors and hatches varnished and all other surfaces oiled; a Dometic refrigerator that runs on solar; a water maker; a VHF with AIS; a Wi‑Fi optimizer; a Viking liferaft; a small Zodiac tender; a Rocna anchor handled by a manual windlass plus a Fortress stern anchor; a NASA Marine weather transmission reader and a Clipper depth gauge; crisp interior LED lighting; sleeping for three without converting the table to a bunk; a kerosene stove; and new interior cushions in navy blue Sunbrella, not shown in photos.

Upgrades

Recent upgrades and onboard equipment underscore Chip-Chip’s readiness for capable, self-sufficient passagemaking, all integrated with an eye for reliability and ease of ownership. You’ll find 200 W of solar driving a lithium house battery through Bluetooth-enabled Victron solar controllers, partnered with a Group 27 AGM starting battery. Self-steering is handled by a large windvane purpose-built for long-distance cruising. Propulsion is a Volvo MD2B diesel, with its transmission rebuilt by the previous owner in 2018, and accompanied by a plethora of extra parts. Fuel is carried in a 50 L tank. Cosmetics and protection are fresh, with new bottom paint and a fresh semi-gloss white interior finish that wipes clean. Exterior teak has been redone, with doors and hatches varnished and all other surfaces oiled. Cold storage comes via a Dometic refrigerator that runs on solar. For true autonomy, there’s a water maker. Communications and connectivity are covered by a VHF with AIS and a Wi‑Fi optimizer. Safety and handling include a Viking liferaft, a small Zodiac tender, a Rocna anchor on a manual windlass, and a Fortress stern anchor. Navigation awareness is enhanced by a NASA Marine weather transmission reader and a Clipper depth gauge. The cabin benefits from interior LED lighting, sleeping for three without converting the table to a bunk, a kerosene stove, and new interior cushions in navy blue Sunbrella (not shown).
