Overview

The 50m Feadship superyacht KORU began her story in 1983 as AZTECA, presenting an iconic Jon Bannenberg silhouette. Dutch-built in aluminium on a semi-displacement platform, this classic luxury motor yacht emerged from a meticulous two-year refit in 2024 that reimagined her exterior and interior while renewing machinery and all primary technical systems to modern superyacht standards.

The project introduced a bold 3.2m transom extension, unlocking a significantly larger swim platform and beach club, complemented by an all-new sundeck and comprehensive exterior refinishing for a fresh, contemporary sheen.

Inside, the layout was completely reconfigured with a refined, custom interior. KORU now welcomes 10 guests in five staterooms, featuring a full-beam owner’s suite, two generous VIP cabins, and two twin cabins; during the works, the former TV lounge was transformed into the fifth guest cabin to enhance guest versatility and comfort.

On deck, enhancements span the newly created sundeck, the expanded beach club and platform, a foredeck Jacuzzi with dedicated Jet Ski stowage, plus an outdoor bar and inviting alfresco dining settings that elevate open-air living.

KORU is powered by twin MTU engines, delivering a smooth cruising speed of approximately 18 knots and a maximum of 20 knots. As part of the rebuild, her machinery received a comprehensive overhaul alongside upgrades to the yacht’s technical backbone, navigation suite, and contemporary AV systems.

Her specification further includes Naiad stabilisers, a bow thruster, Starlink connectivity and updated navigation equipment, enhancing comfort and capability underway and at anchor. The 2024 transformation represents a substantial evolution of the original Feadship platform, defined by the stern extension, the new sundeck, the five-cabin arrangement, the completely redesigned interior, and far‑reaching works to machinery and onboard systems.

Detailed Description

Full specifications

KORU is a semi-displacement motor yacht of unmistakable pedigree, built in Holland by Feadship / C. Van Lent & Zonen B.V. as yard number 747 and launched in 1983, with a major refit completed in 2024 that sensitively refreshes her original Jon Bannenberg vision. Measuring 49.89m (163'8") in length with an 8.41m (27'7") beam and a 2.49m (8'2") draft, she presents 435 GT and 130 NT of volume in an aluminium hull with aluminium superstructure and teak-laid decks, under De Voogt Naval Architects’ celebrated naval architecture. Flagged to the United Kingdom and registered in London with official number 703395 and call sign GCZF, she is not currently in class. Formerly known as AZTECA, MI ALICIA and LIONWIND, KORU retains the hallmark exterior lines by Jon Bannenberg and an interior that was originally his design and then extensively renewed in 2024.

Underway, KORU delivers a poised, efficient performance with a cruising speed of 11 knots at 1,100 rpm and a maximum of 18 knots recorded during the most recent sea trial, with maximum rpm noted at 1,710 rpm. Fuel burn has been carefully documented, with an economical running consumption of approximately 300 litres total for both main engines and a published figure of approximately 430 litres per hour at 15 knots. Her capacities are equally seamanlike, carrying 50,000 litres of fuel, 12,000 litres of fresh water, 2,000 litres of grey water and 1,800 litres of black water within the treatment system, alongside 850 litres of clean lube oil and 350 litres of dirty oil.

The guest arrangement welcomes ten guests in five staterooms comprising one full-beam master suite and two VIP staterooms complemented by two twin guest staterooms. Crew are accommodated in five cabins for up to nine, with the captain’s cabin on the main deck to port and four additional crew cabins for up to eight.

Power is provided by two MTU 16V 538 diesel main engines, each rated at 995 kW and driving a conventional shaft system to two six-blade propellers through ZF Friedrichshafen BW1201S gearboxes. Current recorded engine hours stand at 6,583 hours on the port engine (serial 911331) and 6,446 hours on the starboard engine (serial 911330). The machinery has been diligently maintained, with an MTU W6 major service and total engine rebuild at approximately 3,000 hours completed in 2014, an MTU W3 service performed in 2021, and extensive servicing and overhaul of the main engines incorporated into the 2024 refit.

Electrical power is delivered by two 112 kW Mercedes-Benz OM 402 generator sets with AVK 140 kVA alternators; generator hours are recorded at 25,590 hours port and 27,618 hours starboard. Shore power is 380V / 50Hz, managed through an ISMET WERKE – Joh. Schlenker-Maier shore power transformer with a primary voltage of 380V, secondary voltages of 380 / 220V and a Dy5n0 connection group. A Siemens SIMATIC HMI Touch platform provides vessel alarms, tank status and machinery monitoring.

Onboard climate control is by BITZER, featuring two Bitzer 4C2067PH-2NU-R chillers, with the HVAC and ventilation systems serviced and upgraded during the 2024 programme. Freshwater autonomy is assured by an HEM watermaker producing 750 litres per hour, a LUITEC carbon filtration system with a fresh water filter capacity of 6 m3 per hour, and a 250-litre hot water boiler with two external heating elements.

Her ancillary equipment underscores safe, smooth handling: Tenfjord steering integrates FU, NFU and Auto bridge control with rudder-angle indication; a Schottel S 31 LK bow thruster provides 32 kW of precision manoeuvring; and Vosper Thornycroft 2L Mk3 stabilisers are governed by a Naiad control unit for confident passage-making. Fuel is polished via Alfa Laval separation, bilge water is treated by DECKMA filtration and sewage by a Hamann system.

KORU’s navigation suite is comprehensive and professional, featuring Furuno radar, a Koden GPS Compass, a Furuno FA-170 AIS, an ONWA KEC-30G electronic compass, an Anschütz Kiel gyro with heading repeater and an Anschütz Pilotstar D autopilot, supported by a Furuno ED-2200 depth indicator and a JRC NCR-333 NAVTEX. TimeZero electronic charting pairs with Furuno navigation control systems, while a Furuno CH-Series searchlight sonar expands situational awareness. Communications are equally robust, with a JRC JUE-75C Inmarsat C terminal, a Skanti TRP 8000 MF/HF SSB transceiver and a Skanti DSC 9000 MF/HF DSC controller/receiver. The bridge is further equipped with a Furuno PP-505 EGC printer and a suite of VHF radiotelephones including Sailor Compact VHF DSC RM2042, Sailor Compact VHF RT2048, Sailor Compact VHF RT2047D and an Icom IC-M85 handheld VHF. Connectivity is strengthened by Starlink and Pepwave cellular systems, and a custom intercom ensures clear onboard communication.

Alarm and security provisions include a Siemens SIMATIC HMI Touch vessel monitoring system for tanks, machinery and alarms, a Zoan 4 fire detection control panel, Hikvision CCTV coverage with eight cameras and two dedicated monitors, and a full complement of safety gear. The yacht carries two SOLAS life rafts, four life rings, two EPIRBs, seventeen inflatable life jackets and nine flares. Firefighting capability comprises forty-four portable fire extinguishers, a CO2 fixed fire suppression system, Zoan 4 fire detection and two fire control systems, while a comprehensive medical inventory is maintained onboard.

The deck plan is engineered for effortless operation and guest enjoyment. Ground tackle includes two anchors on STEEN 19/48 windlass gear, with two anchor chains of five shackles each and 17.5mm U2-grade chain; the forward anchor windlass was rebuilt in 2024. Aft mooring is handled by two STEEN 54.46 / 54.64 warping capstans, both rebuilt during the 2024 refit. Handling of tenders and toys is supported by a starboard ADC/3.2 crane with an SWL of 800 kg and a port Nautical Structures 14674-HMC 100/2 crane with an SWL of 500 kg. A custom-built rear transformer and the substantially extended stern deliver a large, versatile swim platform; the teak decks were renewed in 2024, and dedicated shade systems serve the sun deck and aft guest areas.

Entertainment and connectivity are curated through a Crestron / Kaleidescape AV backbone, with Starlink providing high-speed internet and Pepwave bolstering cellular connectivity. The main salon features a large-screen entertainment system, and the sun deck transforms into an outdoor cinema for magical evenings under the stars.

Culinary and service spaces are appointed for professional standards. The main galley features a commercial Angelo Po stainless-steel range, custom built-in refrigeration and freezer units, supplemented by additional stand-alone refrigeration and freezer capacity, and a dishwasher renewed in 2024. Service and bar areas, extensively renewed in 2024, are thoughtfully distributed throughout the yacht with wine coolers, refrigerators and ice makers. A fully equipped laundry includes five washing machines and three dryers, with all equipment renewed during the 2024 upgrade.

The tender and watersports inventory is broad and family-friendly. The primary tender is a Zodiac YL440 Console RIB powered by a Yamaha 60hp outboard. Thrills on the water are provided by two Yamaha EX Sport jet skis and one Yamaha SuperJet stand-up jet ski, complemented by two SeaBob units and one Sublue Whiteshark underwater scooter. A versatile toy chest includes four paddleboards, two inflatable canoes, one water trampoline, one inflatable slide, one inflatable banana and one floating swimming pool, together with two wakeboards and three sets of water skis. Dive operations are supported by two dive compressors.

KORU’s interior honours the original Jon Bannenberg aesthetic while embracing a substantial 2024 redesign. The main deck flows from a principal guest salon—arranged as an open-plan space with extensive seating, generous windows and contemporary finishes that blend dark timber joinery with pale furnishings and marble detailing—into a formal dining area served by adjacent bar, wine storage and service stations. A forward VIP stateroom completes the main deck guest offering, while the upper deck provides a further lounge and entertainment area with seamless access to the surrounding exterior guest terraces.

The stateroom configuration is refined and practical. A full-beam master stateroom occupies the lower deck and includes extensive storage and an ensuite bathroom. Two VIP staterooms provide elevated comfort, with one VIP forward on the main deck and the second on the lower deck, while two twin guest cabins complete the five-stateroom suite to accommodate up to ten guests. Crew quarters support up to nine across five cabins, including the captain’s cabin on the main deck to port and four additional crew cabins for up to eight.

Crowning the yacht, the sun deck was completely rebuilt during the 2024 refit and now features a Jacuzzi, a well-equipped bar, outdoor dining, extensive lounge and sunbathing areas, comprehensive exterior shade solutions and the popular outdoor cinema arrangement.

KORU’s 2024 major refit, a two-year programme in Turkey by Ocean Technical at Aykin Marina & Shipyard, encompassed a full interior overhaul with major layout changes, including the conversion of the former television lounge into an additional guest cabin. The stern was substantially extended to create a large new waterside platform, and the superstructure profile was thoughtfully modified. A completely new sun deck was constructed, the hull received new navy Awlgrip paint and all teak decks were renewed. The programme also included extensive mechanical and electrical servicing, main engine works, upgraded navigation and AV systems, installation of Starlink connectivity, the rebuilding of the forward anchor windlass and aft warping capstans, and a comprehensive refresh of domestic equipment including a new dishwasher, renewed wine coolers, refrigerators and ice makers, and new laundry equipment.

Previous major works affirm a diligent maintenance pedigree. In 2021 at Dutch Balk Shipyard, a recommissioning programme reinstated and rebuilt systems to RINA standard and commenced class reinstatement, with upgraded navigation equipment, verified systems checks, structural strength and thickness inspections, an MTU W3 engine service and major generator works. In 2014, an MTU W6 major service and total engine rebuild were completed at approximately 3,000 hours. Between 2008 and 2009 at Malta Superyacht Services, KORU underwent a one-year refit with significant structural works and system upgrades. In 1997 at Feadship Royal Van Lent, the yacht received a 1.5m stern extension.

A true classic Feadship built by C. Van Lent & Zonen and shaped by De Voogt naval architecture with an original Jon Bannenberg design, KORU now stands renewed by a major two-year refit completed in 2024. Highlights include aluminium semi-displacement construction, a completely rebuilt sun deck, an extended stern with a large swim platform, new teak decks and a navy Awlgrip hull finish. She welcomes ten guests in five staterooms and supports nine crew in five cabins, is driven by twin MTU 16V 538 engines to an 18-knot maximum speed as recorded on her latest sea trial, and benefits from Vosper Thornycroft stabilisers with Naiad control and a Schottel bow thruster. Guests enjoy Starlink connectivity, Crestron / Kaleidescape entertainment, an outdoor cinema, a sun deck Jacuzzi and an extensive tender and watersports inventory—an elegant synthesis of heritage, performance and contemporary luxury.
