Overview

Rufous is a superb Krogen 44' AE Widebody bluewater trawler, impeccably cared-for and turnkey. Back from the Bahamas and seasoned in Maine, she boasts smart upgrades, a ceramic-coated hull, and is ready to cruise wherever your journeys lead.

Detailed Description

Construction

Crafted from high-grade female tooling, the hull and superstructure benefit from precision molds that ensure rigidity and flawless finish. The hull features USA-made Cook® gel coat over a hand-laid Kyntex® fiberglass laminate, with a closed-cell PVC sandwich core in the topsides. Below the waterline, the construction is solid fiberglass, and the first two laminates incorporate blister-resistant vinyl ester resin. Impact-resistant aramid/FRP reinforcement fortifies the stem and the stern bottom areas, while the massive Krogen stringer system delivers exceptional strength at a notably lower weight.

The superstructure employs a vacuum-bagged foam core and Kyntex® surface mats to reduce print-through. Teak defines the aft and side decks, while the boat and fore decks carry a GripTex® non-skid finish, and the bulwarks present molded plank lines with a gel coat finish. Polyurethane-formulated marine sealants are applied at the hull-to-deck joint, the boat deck, and exterior fittings. Inside, marine-grade, fiberglass-covered plywood bulkheads integrate with molded fiberglass hat-section stringers for enduring rigidity and longevity.

Saloon

Entered from the fully covered aft deck through two weathertight, welded aluminum doors with windows, the bright and airy saloon welcomes you with a thoughtful blend of comfort and craftsmanship. To starboard, a large L-shaped settee upholstered in custom Ultraleather wraps around a teak fold-out dining and coffee table set on a hi-low base, creating a versatile hub for relaxed gatherings or intimate meals. To port, two comfortable Ekornes leather recliners with matching footstools flank a high/low side table, forming a serene retreat for reading or conversation. Generous opening windows to port and starboard, complemented by an opening window in the aft bulkhead, bring in fresh breezes and natural light; each is fitted with screens, teak valances, and curtains for refined control of the environment. The saloon is prewired for sound, while the teak and spruce flooring lends a modern yet distinctly nautical character. Practicality is equally prioritized, with multiple hatches in the saloon floor providing direct access to the engine room, though day-to-day entry is made even more convenient via lift-up stairs at the stateroom companionway. This AE upgrade notably enhances comfort and ease of use, and the stairs are fitted with a deadlight so the captain can glance into the engine room while underway without lifting the steps.

Galley

Forward of the saloon on the starboard side, the open-faced U-shaped galley is meticulously arranged for effortless workflow and is fully capable of supporting a professional chef. Abundant storage is thoughtfully distributed among multiple cabinets and drawers, while a screened opening port above the stove introduces natural light and delivers excellent ventilation while cooking. AE model upgrades expand the footprint to accommodate a professional Viking four-burner propane stove with oven and convection oven, as well as a stainless steel GE 19 cu ft refrigerator/freezer of impressive capacity.

Completing the culinary suite are a stainless steel GE microwave/convection oven, a large single stainless steel sink, a Grohe faucet with pull-out head, a Seagull water filtration system, sleek Corian countertops, and a GE garbage disposal. To port of the galley, a teak buffet and bar with liquor cabinet is complemented by teak bookshelves.

Owner stateroom

The large owner stateroom is located forward and centers on an island queen bed with a custom mattress, complemented by a lighted mirror dresser, ample drawer storage, and his-and-her hanging lockers. Four screened opening ports and an opening hatch above the bed bathe the space in natural light and invite welcome ventilation, while a large storage compartment beneath the bed, accessed by a hydraulic lift, adds exceptional practicality. For added convenience and peace of mind, a Furuno RD33 display is mounted beside the bed for quick position checks and anchor alarms.

Head

Situated to port opposite the guest stateroom or office, the head features a large molded shower stall with a seat and a bi-fold aluminum and glass door. A Dometic Masterflush freshwater toilet complements a mirrored medicine cabinet, a linen locker, and a Corian-topped vanity to create a refined and highly practical space. On the port side of the companionway, stacked Asko front-loading, household-size washer and dryer units are neatly concealed behind teak louvered doors.

Guest stateroom/office

To starboard, this versatile guest stateroom doubles as a well-appointed office. An Ultraleather settee effortlessly converts to a comfortable double bed, while a Pullman berth adds further berthing capacity. A dedicated desk with drawer and fitted book shelves anchors the workspace, complemented by generous drawer and locker storage to keep everything shipshape. Two screened opening ports provide abundant natural light and ventilation, creating an exceptionally open, airy ambiance.

Pilothouse

The raised pilothouse delivers commanding sight lines and sits just a few short steps up from the saloon via normal-riser stairs with a sturdy banister. Thoughtful details abound, including built-in storage compartments within the steps and a bookshelf poised above them, while welded aluminum Dutch doors to port and starboard can be dogged down to create a watertight seal. An Ultraleather settee that serves as a watch berth converts to a double bed for additional guests, complemented by a teak high-low table that becomes an ideal workstation for a laptop—an office with an ever-changing view. The Ultraleather LeBroc helm chair, with a fold-up bolster and footrest, offers the captain exceptional comfort under way while minimizing its footprint, and multiple cabinets, drawers, and compartments provide abundant storage throughout. Outside and aft of the port pilothouse door, a molded staircase grants easy access to the flybridge.

Electronics

Commanding the navigation suite, a Furuno TZ Touch 14.1-inch color LCD multi-function display anchors the pilothouse, complemented by a Furuno TZ Touch 9-inch color LCD multi-function display on the flybridge. Precision handling is delivered by the Furuno NavPilot 711 autopilot with dedicated displays at both the pilothouse and flybridge helms, while Furuno RD-33 multi-function displays serve the pilothouse, flybridge, and master stateroom for seamless data visibility throughout. Situational awareness is further elevated by a Furuno Class B AIS transponder and a Furuno 4-foot, 64 nm open-array radar that pierces the horizon with authority.

Confident communication comes via an ICOM IC-M504 VHF with a 20 W hailer at the pilothouse and flybridge, paired with ICOM CommandMic III remote microphones at both stations, and long-range reach through an ICOM IC-M802 SSB working in concert with an SCS PTC-IIIusb SSB modem. Safety and systems oversight are strengthened by an Ocean Signal ARH 100 EPIRB with auto-release cradle, a Racor remote vacuum gauge in the pilothouse, a Sealand Tank Manager with key control, and an Ultra Safety System high-water bilge alarm. Traditional navigation fidelity and helm awareness are assured by a Ritchie compass at both the pilothouse and flybridge helms and rudder angle indicators at both stations, while a Speco Technologies CVC627MR stern-view camera sharpens close-quarters confidence and a MicroTic WiFi extender broadens onboard connectivity.

Electrical

A robust electrical backbone begins with a 9 kW Northern Lights generator with a sound shield showing 1894 hours, complemented by versatile shore power connectivity via a 50 Amp inlet forward and aft, plus a 30 Amp inlet aft dedicated to light loads. Power storage is provided by six Lifeline AMG 255 AH batteries secured in fitted fiberglass boxes, with all batteries new in 2023.

Command and monitoring are intuitive and refined, with breaker panels featuring blue backlit labels with indicator lights, digital volt and amp displays, and clear Lexan doors that make breaker status instantly visible. The system integrates a Magnum inverter/charger, a Charles isolation transformer, and a Charles 40 amp battery charger, while a BEP remote battery control panel and battery switches in the saloon, together with a house-to-engine start battery parallel switch, deliver seamless control and redundancy. Climate comfort is assured by three 16,000 BTU CruisAir Reverse Cycle Air conditioning systems with SMTXht controls. Bright, efficient LED lighting illuminates the yacht throughout, including the navigation lights; exterior overhead LEDs are blue/white switchable, while select interior LEDs are red/white switchable.

Engine room/machinery

Power is delivered by a John Deere 6068TFM Tier II diesel rated at 158 hp (3525 hours), managed via ZF Marine electronic throttle and transmission controls. Fuel is polished and protected by dual Racor fuel filters with a vacuum gauge and individual drain spigots for the main engine, complemented by a remote gauge in the pilothouse, while the generator benefits from its own dual Racor fuel filters with a vacuum gauge. A Reverso oil change system services the engine, gear and generator, and a dedicated fuel transfer pump adds flexibility for fuel management. Precision handling comes from ABT hydraulic bow and stern thrusters paired with ABT digital hydraulic stabilizers. Ground tackle is commanded by a Maxwell hydraulic windlass featuring a dual chain wildcat and single rope gypsy, dual chain stoppers, and controls located on deck as well as at the pilothouse and flybridge helms. Reliability is further enhanced by a Tides dripless stuffing box and an emergency bilge pump tied into the main engine’s raw water intake. Fresh water delivery is assured by a Headhunter Mach 5 pump with a 4 Gal accumulator tank, while ship’s power at anchor is provided by a Northern Lights 9kw generator. The engine room benefits from a dedicated ventilation system utilizing intake and exhaust biaxial fans with moisture eliminators capable of moving 1500 cu.ft. of air per minute. Thoughtful design ensures easy access to the engine room from lift-up steps descending from the galley or via large hatches in the saloon floor.

Additional components

Thoughtfully outfitted, this yacht carries an AB 11ALX 11'6" tender powered by a 25 hp Yamaha, complemented by a Puffin rowing dinghy for quiet shore runs. Secure, full-height walk-through cockpit boarding gates ease embarkation, while Warn 1,200 lb hoists serve the boom and lift for confident handling. Ground tackle is robust, featuring a Rocna anchor and a Fortress FX37 anchor, with a bow eye fitted to reduce scope when anchoring. A Trident propane locker houses two twenty-pound propane tanks to supply the galley, and the saloon’s aft door includes a hideaway screen that welcomes the breeze. The pilothouse is protected with Textaline screens, and custom Sunbrella cushions elevate comfort on the flybridge and foredeck. Watersports are supported by a dedicated dive and swim ladder, and a sun shade cools the aft cockpit. A Spurs cutter safeguards the prop shaft, while the interior relaxes with two Ekornes chairs, an ottoman, and an Ellipse teak table. The exterior benefits from a ceramic coating for lasting gloss and protection, and a liferaft adds peace of mind for extended passages.
