Overview
Conceived as Design No. 505A by the G.L. Watson office in 1928, the 20‑metre on‑deck JULIETTE—formerly Courtlinne, Saracen, Moonbeam, Moonbeam Junior and Pretty Polly—was commissioned from Alexander Robertson & Sons at Sandbank, Scotland, as yard number 180. With a 15‑metre waterline, this remarkable vintage sailing yacht stands among the last Scottish‑built gaff cutters and remains a standout classic yacht on the international regatta scene. Her backbone is a single, massive teak keel carrying 16 tons of bolted lead ballast, while the original teak deck, preserved for over ninety years save for a few renewals, is fastened directly to the beams, underscoring her pedigree heritage.
Below, varnished mahogany joinery gleams; the interior, reinstated to its authentic specification in 1992, accommodates six guests in three double cabins in the period arrangement. For safe, effortless handling this luxury classic cruiser‑racer is equipped with Barient self‑tailing winches, three of them electric—one for the mainsail and two for the genoa—and the mainsail, genoa and staysail are all on furlers. At anchor she is comprehensively prepared, with twin 100‑metre chains of 16 and 14 mm served by a powerful 3,500 W Lofrans windlass for secure holding.
Her Gardner six‑cylinder, 10‑litre auxiliary engine is fresh‑water cooled via a circuit feeding a heat exchanger mounted externally on the port side of the hull. The main fuel tank holds 400 litres and was refurbished in 2020, while a 125‑litre generator tank and an 80‑litre auxiliary tank are fitted, with a transfer pump able to supply the main engine when required. The stainless‑steel shaft line with starboard‑side variable‑pitch propeller was renewed by Hundested in 2009, completing a refined and seaworthy mechanical package befitting a blue‑water classic of such distinction.
