Detailed Description

Section name

Forest E. Johnson was a master boatbuilder, renowned for his classic wooden powerboats, particularly the iconic "Prowler" series. The first Prowler set sail in 1948, a year after Forest E. married Heidi Tutwiler, marking the beginning of a legacy that would see his vessels become instant classics. These boats were not only popular among rum runners and government agencies but also found favor with politicians, businessmen, movie stars, and racing enthusiasts. Forest E.'s clientele included luminaries such as Marilyn Monroe, Sam Snead, Don Aronow, Sam Griffith, Ernest Hemingway, and even President Richard Nixon, who once called during an economic downturn to check on his favorite boatbuilder.

Among these legendary designs, the 1959 Prowler 24 stands out as perhaps the most attractive runabout, celebrated for its timeless aesthetic appeal and performance. The vessel, named Marlin, features an open cockpit with a small cuddy cabin forward and a flush foredeck elegantly laid in teak. Constructed with traditional plank frame methods, Marlin boasts cedar planking over mahogany saw frames, complemented by a mahogany superstructure.

In 2019, Marlin underwent an extensive 18-month restoration that would surely make Forest Johnson proud. Her engine was meticulously removed and overhauled, while all systems were either overhauled, replaced, or updated to meet modern ABYC standards. Enhancements included a custom fabricated swim platform and additional rear seating in the cockpit. A new marine head was installed, and all bright mahogany was stripped, faired, stained, and newly varnished. For added durability and longevity, the original hull skin was sheathed in biaxial fiberglass, faired to perfection, and finished with a glossy AwlCraft paint.

Owned and offered for sale by a professional yachtsman and purveyor of fine vessels, who also operates a boat dealership and mechanical shop, Marlin has been maintained in impeccable 'Bristol condition.' No expense or effort has been spared in preserving the elegance and performance of this special boat, ensuring it remains a testament to Forest E. Johnson's enduring legacy.
