Overview

PINTAIL, Contract No. 407, is one of two 84-foot Trumpy hulls built and the sole cruiser configuration. Rebuilt in 1999 and double-planked in mahogany, this classic motor yacht offers three staterooms, generous aft cockpit, raised pilothouse, and a full-beam galley. She has operated seasonally for 18 years, a familiar luxury yacht in Nantucket, Charleston, Jacksonville, and Palm Beach.

Detailed Description

Overview

PINTAIL, Contract No. 407, is one of only two large 84-foot hulls built by Trumpy and the sole example constructed in the cruiser configuration. Commissioned by Col. David Flagstaff and originally launched as PINTAIL, she later sailed as ARAS, then ACHASTES, and in 1984 became WISHING STAR under Mr. Michael Eagan; in 2024 she proudly reclaimed her original name.

Between 1997 and 1999 she underwent an exhaustive $2.2 million rebuild that returned her to virtually new condition in every aspect, and across her life she has benefited from long-term stewardship by devoted custodians who have continually upgraded and refined the vessel. Two years ago she completed an extensive yard period under the care of the experts at the Bristol Marine Samples Shipyard facility in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and she has since received consistent annual service and maintenance. Inspectors will find her in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, with updated systems and readiness for immediate cruising.

As Contract No. 407 and one of only two 84-foot Trumpy hulls, she stands apart with all structural and mechanical systems up to date and fully serviced. Her three-stateroom layout is complemented by two additional crew cabins, while a cockpit and swim platform provide effortless access to the water. Perfectly suited for entertaining, cocktail cruising, or extended voyages, she remains one of the finest Gentleman’s Yachts afloat.

Accommodations

PINTAIL presents a thoughtfully orchestrated arrangement from bow to stern. Forward, the dedicated crew quarters comprise two separate sleeping cabins, a head with a separate stall shower, and a comfortable U-shaped settee. Aft, a full-beam galley with integrated laundry facilities provides convenient access to the engine room and a companionway to the dining saloon. In the forward salon, a white wicker table and chairs form the inviting centerpiece, framed by forward- and side-facing windows that bathe the space in light and complemented by generous aft storage. Progressing aft, the wheelhouse yields to the salon, which opens through French doors to the aft deck for effortless indoor–outdoor living. From a companionway aft in the salon, guests reach two twin-berth guest cabins positioned forward with a shared head, while the beautifully appointed owner’s stateroom is set aft with a queen berth and en-suite head. Completing the layout, a spacious aft cockpit offers an ideal setting for fishing or gathering for watersports.

Pilothouse

The raised pilothouse provides excellent visibility in all directions, complemented by an opening panel in the aft bulkhead above the settee for full stern visibility. A buttoned leather settee that doubles as a helm bench offers chart storage beneath and features new upholstery in 2024. Command is centered around a classic eight-spoke wood ship’s wheel, while a manual, gear-operated opening front windshield enhances airflow and control. Generous storage is thoughtfully integrated throughout, and the teak-and-holly sole is elegantly accented by a tufted area rug.

Galley

Thoughtfully appointed for serious culinary endeavors, the galley centers on a Thermodore four-burner stainless range beneath an exhaust hood, paired with a Thermodore stainless oven/microwave combination for versatile cooking. Cold storage is expansive and beautifully integrated, featuring two Custom Sub-Zero refrigeration drawers, two Vitrifrigo double refrigeration drawers (2025), a Vitrifrigo convertible refrigerator/freezer drawer (2025), and a dedicated Custom Sub-Zero freezer. Cleanup is effortless with a Bosch Gaggenau dishwasher and a double-basin stainless sink fitted with a single-handle pull-down sprayer faucet. Practical luxury continues with durable Formica countertops framed by a tile backsplash surround, while a Miele stainless clothes washer (2025) and Miele stainless clothes dryer discreetly elevate onboard convenience. Underfoot, a classic teak-and-holly sole completes the space with timeless nautical warmth.

Dining

The dining area welcomes you with new wicker furniture (2024) that brings a breezy elegance to the space, while a newly wool-carpeted sole (2024) adds plush underfoot comfort and refined warmth, together creating a fresh, inviting setting for leisurely meals and conversation.

Salon

The salon is a study in classic elegance, beginning with a protective runner over the newly wool-carpeted sole (2024) and beautifully finished in rich mahogany paneling. An inviting L-shaped sofa/settee with new upholstery (2024) pairs gracefully with three Trumpy chairs, also reupholstered in 2024, to create a refined conversation area. Illumination is thoughtfully layered through four wall sconces (2024), two reading lamps (2024), and new overhead lighting fixtures (2024), ensuring a warm, welcoming glow day or night. An entertainment center is positioned on the forward bulkhead, while French doors lead seamlessly to the aft deck, encouraging an effortless indoor-outdoor flow. Window treatments include white-colored drapes with complementary accent striping (2024) and roll-down privacy blinds (2024) for tailored light and privacy control. Completing the experience, a new sound system (2025) elevates the ambiance with crisp, modern audio throughout the space.

Owner's cabin

The owner’s cabin centers on a full walk-around queen-size berth, flanked by two marble-topped side tables and illuminated by two bedside reading lamps. To starboard, a marble-topped desk with a lift-up mirror vanity provides a refined personal space, while to port a small upholstered settee offers a comfortable retreat. Storage is abundant with three large hanging lockers, complemented by fresh air and light from four opening ports, and the ambiance is completed by a newly wool-carpeted sole (2024).

The ensuite owner's head exudes refined functionality with a Raritan freshwater flush head paired to a new keypad control installed in 2026, complemented by a marble countertop and backsplash that elevate the space with timeless elegance. A tile-lined stall shower offers a spa-like retreat, while an opening port invites natural light and fresh air. Underfoot, rich hardwood flooring completes the ambiance with warm, yacht-worthy sophistication.

A granite countertop with matching backsplash complements the hardwood flooring, while a tile-lined stall shower provides a refined, practical bathing area. An opening port brings in natural light and ventilation, and direct access from either the cabin or the hallway allows effortless use as a day head.

Hull and deck equipment

Originally crafted with cedar inner planking and mahogany outer planking, PINTAIL was completely re-planked in 1998 and now boasts double-planked mahogany throughout. Her structure is defined by 2 1/4-inch oak frames on 12-inch centers with 2 1/2-inch oak floor timbers, while the stem, keel, and horn are also oak. Four main longitudinals serve as robust engine beds, carrying the engine’s weight with purposeful strength. The house tops and side decks are fiberglassed, with the side decks and bow similarly fiberglass-covered for durability.

Significant structural refinements underscore her recent stewardship. In 2022 the starboard side deck was rebuilt, including removal of the cutwater and replacement of the underlying structure; the brass plate was re-bedded, six frames and twenty planks were replaced, and the shaft logs were rebuilt. In 2023 an additional eight planks were renewed around the port strut, two floors were replaced in the aft cabin, and the entire aft cockpit deck and its substructure were comprehensively rebuilt. Complementing these works, the pilothouse windshield was rebuilt in 2022, non-skid paint was applied to the top deck, brow, coamings, and foredeck in 2022, and a full hull paint was completed in 2023, followed by full bottom paint, PropSpeed, and hull touch-ups in May 2026.

The aft deck is thoughtfully appointed for gracious living, with a Scotsman icemaker added in 2026 and a U-Line refrigerator, removable Isinglass curtains fitted in 2022, a large custom teak table seating six to eight comfortably, and six upholstered wicker chairs added in 2024. Canvas covers protect nearly all exterior brightwork, all replaced within the last five years, while a sunshade cover preserves the pilothouse windshield. The aft deck is teak-planked over its fully rebuilt substructure completed in 2023, and the foredeck features two varnished teak bow storage boxes with cushions, their upholstery renewed in 2024. Fresh dock lines and custom leather fender hooks were added in 2026.

Her ground tackle and boarding arrangements are equally capable, led by an Ideal anchor windlass serving a Suncor Seamaster 70 lb anchor with a 300-foot chain rode and a Lewmar Delta plow anchor. Shoreside access is effortless via a Marquip Tideride seven-step gangway and a Marquip boarding ladder.

Safety equipment is comprehensive, including three life rings, an eight-person liferaft with inspection expired March 2026, numerous lifejackets, and all USCG-required safety gear.

Recent systems renewals in 2023 include removal of the black water tanks and replacement with new hoses, pumps, and filters, a new grey water system with fresh sumps and hoses, replacement of bilge pumps, switches, and hoses, thorough cleaning, deodorizing, and painting of all accessible bilges, fuel tanks emptied and cleaned, and multiple through-hulls replaced. Two spare props are mounted in the lazarette, and a versatile tender complements the package: a thirteen-foot 1998 Boston Whaler 13 Sport 40th Anniversary with a Yamaha outboard.

Machinery and electrical

Power is delivered by two Detroit Diesel 450 hp 12V71N engines showing 5,276 hours to port and 5,643 hours to starboard (6/2026). Both engines were fully inspected with all recommendations completed (2026), and front seals were replaced on both engines (2025). Propulsion is managed through two Twin Disc 2:1 ratio transmissions. Ship’s power is supplied by a 30 kW Northern Lights generator showing 2,383 hours (6/2026), new in 2023, complemented by a 20 kW Northern Lights generator with 5,859 hours (6/2026). Fuel management features Racor dual fuel filtration for both main engines and generators, a fuel transfer pump rebuilt (2026), and a new oil transfer pump (2025), while Walker Airsep units serve the main engines.

For stability and running gear, Wesmar stabilizers were removed, inspected, hydraulics rebuilt, and fully serviced (2023). The shafts were removed and reconditioned with new PSS shaft seals and cutlass bearings installed, and a new port strut fitted (2023). A Nautical Structures tender davit provides dependable handling for the tender.

Onboard climate control is assured by eight Cruiseair air‑conditioning units that were serviced, reconditioned, or replaced (2026), supported by an air‑conditioning raw‑water pump replaced (2023). Freshwater and watermaking systems include an SK Watermakers 40 gph watermaker (2023), three new stainless water heaters (2019), and new 120 V and 24 V freshwater pumps (2023). Waste systems were refreshed with three blackwater pumps rebuilt (2026) and three sanitation vent filters replaced (2026), while Arid Bilge Systems were rebuilt and tubing replaced (2023).

Electrical systems comprise 110 V/220 V AC and 12 V/24 V DC, with shore power handled by two 50‑amp electrical cords providing fore and aft connections. Battery inventory includes 24 V house service batteries (new 2023), a 12 V bridge battery backup system and charger (new 2023), 12 V generator starting batteries (new 2026), and 24 V main engine starting batteries (new 2026).

Safety and illumination are equally well considered, with a Kidde CO₂ engine room fire‑suppression system inspected (2026) and ten portable fire extinguishers inspected (2026). LED lighting was installed throughout the vessel (2026), and smoke detectors were replaced (2026).

Electronics and navigation

At the helm, a comprehensive suite of systems inspires confidence, beginning with three electric wipers with freshwater washers and a manually operated, roof-mounted spotlight, and extending to precise Bennett trim tabs, Wesmar stabilizer controls, and a Ritchie magnetic compass. Navigation and situational awareness are anchored by a Furuno/NavNet radar (48-mile range) and a Garmin GPSMAP chartplotter (2018), complemented by a Simrad AP22 autopilot and a Simrad speed and depth display. Communications are equally robust with an Icom M602 VHF radio with RAM mic, a B&G network VHF radio, and a Standard Horizon VLH-3000 hailer. Entertainment is seamlessly integrated via a KVH TracVision satellite television antenna system feeding three DirecTV receivers serving the salon, master, and crew quarters, with two Toshiba 26" flat-screen TVs in the salon and owner’s cabin, two Yamaha stereos in the salon and owner’s cabin, a Yamaha CD player in the salon, and an Insignia TV with DVD player in the crew quarters.

Crew cabins

Thoughtfully appointed for comfort and efficiency, the crew cabins feature three twin-size upper and lower bunks that maximize sleeping flexibility, complemented by two hanging lockers with drawer storage to keep gear neatly organized. Natural light and fresh air flow through four opening ports, while a large overhead hatch enhances ventilation and provides direct access to the deck for swift movement. Underfoot, oak hardwood flooring lends enduring durability and a refined finish.

Captain's cabin

Located to port, opposite the crew dinette, the captain’s cabin is a thoughtfully appointed retreat featuring a single twin-size bunk, a hanging locker and generous drawer storage to keep essentials neatly organized. Natural light and fresh air flow through two opening ports, while oak hardwood flooring provides a warm, refined finish.

Shared crew head

Thoughtfully appointed, the shared crew head features a Raritan freshwater-flush toilet installed in 2014, paired with a new toilet macerator and a new head keypad control added in 2026 for clean, reliable operation. A porcelain wash basin is set within practical cabinetry that offers generous toiletry storage, while two opening ports invite natural light and fresh air. A separate stall shower, rebuilt and refreshed in 2023, completes this robust and refined space.

Crew dinette/lounge

Designed for relaxed off-watch moments, this inviting space features a U-shaped dinette with seating for four, illuminated by natural light streaming through two opening ports. Entertainment is seamlessly handled by an Insignia flat-screen HDTV with DVD player, while oak hardwood flooring lends warmth and resilience underfoot. Climate comfort is assured by a new crew air-conditioning system installed in 2023, creating a refined and restful retreat for the team.

Recent upgrades

A comprehensive program of improvements has been undertaken, beginning in 2023 with a teak-planked aft cockpit deck atop a fully rebuilt substructure, a full hull repaint, and wide-ranging system renewals: black-water tanks were removed and replaced with new hoses, pumps, and filters; the grey-water system received new sumps and hoses; bilge pumps, switches, and hoses were all replaced; every accessible bilge was cleaned, deodorized, and painted; fuel tanks were emptied and cleaned; and multiple through-hulls were replaced. A 30kW Northern Lights generator, installed new in 2023, shows 2,383 hours as of 6/2026. Both main engines were fully inspected and surveyed with all recommendations completed, the Wesmar stabilizers were removed, inspected, hydraulics rebuilt, and fully serviced, and the running gear benefited from shafts removed and reconditioned, new PSS shaft seals and cutlass bearings installed, and a new port strut. In 2024, guest areas were refreshed with new wool carpeting throughout, complemented by new lighting fixtures, new upholstery, and new wicker furniture. The program continued in 2025 with a trunk cabin roof rebuilt in carbon-fiber cloth and epoxy, new raw-water pumps for both main engines, new main and generator batteries, and a new water heater serving both guest and crew accommodations. Comfort systems were further elevated in 2026 as eight Cruiseair air-conditioning units were serviced, reconditioned, and/or replaced, the air-conditioning raw-water pump was replaced, new head control panels were fitted, and the galley and laundry area underwent a thoughtful remodel. Rounding out the equipment enhancements is an SK Watermakers 40 gph watermaker.
