Overview
Ready to turn your cruising dreams into reality? Meet KNOT KAOS, the turnkey 34’ American Tug trawler that’s poised to whisk you away. Cast off for the Great Loop, slip across to the Bahamas, or savor elegant coastal cruising—this compact passagemaker is prepared and refined in every detail. With a stunning Cabernet red Awlgrip hull that gleams, a quiet and dependable 380 hp Cummins common-rail diesel showing approximately 3,500 hours, and a 6 kW Northern Lights generator in a sound shield, this pilothouse cruiser is among the finest 34-foot tug yachts on the Great Lakes. A meticulous, exceptionally thorough maintenance log accompanies the vessel, while new upholstery (2025) elevates the interior. Complementing her cruising independence are a 2024 AB console aluminum RIB with 20 hp Mercury outboard, Tomco electric dinghy davits, a newly installed stern thruster (2025), dual 175 W solar panels each with Victron MPPT control (2022), a bimini with zip-in sunscreens on three sides (2022), and a new MasterFlush electric head (2022). Immaculate stem to stern and absolutely ready to go, KNOT KAOS is currently stored in heated indoor comfort and scheduled to launch on 6/1/2026.
Step below into accommodations designed for extended voyaging and graceful liveaboard life. Forward, the owner’s stateroom presents a centerline queen berth with a pillow-top mattress and cover, flanked by handsome teak lockers, shelves, and drawers for abundant storage. The en-suite head is notable for offering what is widely regarded as the most generous stall shower found on a yacht of this size, paired with a beautifully lit vanity, a large sink, and a recently updated electric toilet. Rising to the raised pilothouse, you’ll find the full suite of navigation equipment for confident passagemaking, with twin side doors providing safe, convenient deck access and fitted sun shades across the pilothouse windows. A few steps aft and down, the salon/galley creates an inviting social heart: to starboard, a spotlessly kept chef’s workspace; to port, a convertible dinette whose table lowers and cushion extends to form a comfortable berth. Oversized windows flood the space with light and provide nearly 360-degree sightlines—perfect for enjoying every harbor and horizon.
The galley is a delight for serious cooks and casual hosts alike. An L-shaped layout with Granicoat countertops offers generous prep area, while a Force 10 three-burner electric glass cooktop with oven, a Sharp Carousel microwave, and a NovaKool DC refrigerator/freezer (7.3 cu ft) with Stainless Lobster optimization ensure easy gourmet capability. Practicality matches style through a freshwater filtration system, double stainless sinks, pressure water with a new pump (2022), and a Raritan 12-gallon electric water heater with engine recirculation (2022). Whether you’re preparing an elegant dinner underway or a quick bite at anchor, the chef remains part of the conversation with the captain at the helm, guests relaxing in the salon, or friends enjoying the aft cockpit.
Navigation and entertainment systems are set for serious cruising. The helm is equipped with a Furuno 1710 radar with radome and a Raymarine C120 color GPS/chart plotter with integrated depth sounder, backed by Navionics electronic charts spanning the U.S. East Coast, the Great Lakes, the Bahamas, British Columbia, and Alaska. Seamless data integration is supported by Raymarine Seatalk with USB/NMEA I/O for a navigation computer, while an EmTrak class B+ SOTDMA AIS transceiver (2019) enhances situational awareness. The suite also includes a Raymarine ST6001 autopilot with handheld E15022 remote, ST60 multifunction depth/speed and rudder-angle displays, and a Raymarine Maxview large-screen sounder display. Communications and safety are covered with a Raymarine RAY54 VHF with MMSI/DSC and an ACR GlobalFix GPIRB. Comfort and connectivity come courtesy of a Siren Marine MTC monitor/track/communicate system with GPS geofencing (2020), an Intellian i2 satellite dome with DirecTV receiver, terrestrial TV antenna, dockside cable input, a new 32" Vizio HDTV (2024), a Sony AM/FM/CD receiver with speakers, plus a weather station with barograph. LED navigation lights, a Ritchie 4" LED-lit compass, and classic Weems & Plath clock and barometer round out the pilothouse. A 12V AFI air horn stands ready to announce your arrival.
The electrical system is robust, modern, and thoughtfully upgraded for self-sufficiency. Two 175 W SunPower rigid solar panels, each on its own Victron SmartSolar MPPT controller with breaker disconnects (August 2022), feed an all-AGM battery suite composed of three 4D Lifeline house batteries, one 4D Lifeline AGM engine start, and a Group 24 AGM generator start, with dedicated Group 31 Lifeline AGMs for both bow and stern thrusters. A Northern Lights M673L2 6 kW generator (approx. 1,800 hours) in a sound shield features an upgraded control panel displaying water temperature, oil pressure, voltage, and hours. Charging and inversion are handled by a Magnum MS2012 2000 W inverter/100 A charger with a pilothouse remote, plus a TrueCharge 40 A automatic charger for genset and thruster banks with SCR automatic battery combining. Shore power flexibility comes by way of twin 30 A/125 V SmartPlug inlets (2020), three 50 ft 30 A SmartPlug cords (2020), two additional 30 A/125 V cords/extensions, and a 50 A to twin 25 A “Y” adapter. Throughout the interior, lighting has been converted to LEDs, and the yacht is wired on 12 V DC/110 V AC systems with galvanic isolators for added protection.
On deck and along the hull, every detail supports confident, stylish cruising. The Cabernet red Awlgrip LP finish with a clear coat exudes a deep gloss, while ground tackle includes a Rocna 44 lb primary (2014), a Fortress FX-23 secondary, and a Lofrans Tigres windlass spooled with 275 ft of 5/16" galvanized chain (new chain in 2022), featuring power up/down, foot switches at the foredeck, a custom-grooved roller, an anchor washdown, and a new Iris II chain counter at the helm (2024). Shade and shelter are provided by a 2022 bimini with zip-in sunscreens on three sides and a Sunbrella full cockpit cover, complemented by Phifertex snap-on windshield and window covers (2021/2022). Diamond SeaGlaze doors and windows, windshield wipers and washers (2022), upgraded windshield defroster controls (2024), and a Bomar opening forward hatch with screen and Sunbrella cover all speak to all-weather capability. Practical features abound: a transom door, hot/cold cockpit shower, fiberglass decks with molded nonskid, six fenders and six black yacht-braid lines, a swim platform with a new extended four-rung ladder (2024), and life jackets for seven. Tender handling is a breeze with both a factory-installed Tanner 12 V stainless davit system and Tomco electric dinghy davits, aided by a custom Dyneema lifting harness. The tender package shines with a 2024 AB AL10 aluminum RIB (10’6”) featuring a Weaver helm station and a 2024 Mercury 10 hp EFI four-stroke outboard with electric start, power tilt, and a Group 24 battery in a box. Rounding out the inventory are a Fortress FX-7 small-boat anchor with 10 ft of 3/16" stainless chain and 100 ft of 7/16" polypropylene rode, and fresh bottom paint—two coats of Trinidad Pro applied in 2024.
The machinery space is spacious, spotless, and engineered for reliability. Power is supplied by a Cummins QSB5.9M Tier II 380 hp inline six-cylinder turbocharged and aftercooled diesel with high-pressure common rail injection—running cleanly and quietly—with a new OEM alternator fitted in May 2022. Enhancements include a custom DeAngelo Inconel water-injected exhaust elbow (2017), Cummins SmartCraft digital engine displays, and traditional Morse mechanical shift and throttle controls. Propulsion runs through a Twin Disc MG5061 2.43:1 gear with a cupronickel cooler to a Conquest bronze propeller 26" x 25" (2019), re-pitched in 2024. Dockside finesse is assured by Sleipner Side-Power bow and stern thrusters with joystick and remote control, while Teleflex SeaStar hydraulic steering delivers smooth helm feel. Climate control features updated MarineAir two-zone reverse-cycle heat and air (master and salon/galley) with digital thermostats and Micro-Air soft starts providing a total of 30,000 BTU (2022), augmented by King 120 V electric baseboard heaters in the stateroom and salon and engine coolant/forced-air heat to the pilothouse and stateroom. Drivetrain upgrades include a PSS dripless shaft seal (2022), an upgraded Tides Marine rudder lip seal (2022), and a Shaft Shark line cutter. Filtration and serviceability are top-tier with a Walker AirSep, dual Racor fuel filter/water separators with vacuum gauge and a quick-shift valve for the main, plus a dedicated Racor for the generator. A Reverso oil change system serves the main engine, transmission, and genset, and both powerplants are freshwater cooled. A new SMX raw water pump was installed on the main in 2022, with a spare aboard. Safety and maintenance items include raw-water strainers, three automatic/manual bilge pumps (tank room pump new in 2022), a high-water alarm, a Fireboy automatic fire suppression system, two Halotron handheld extinguishers, and thermal/acoustic insulation. The aftercooler was serviced in July 2023 with new air-side hoses that same year. A deep, carefully cataloged spares inventory is carried, including multiple Racor elements for main and generator, on-engine fuel filters, lube oil filters, a spare alternator for the main, various hoses and belts, main and generator impellers, multiple strainer baskets for main, genset, and AC/heat pump systems along with assorted gaskets, and spare zincs for the main engine, rudder shaft, and prop shaft. Generator spares include a thermostat, heat exchanger gasket, exhaust elbow gasket, and additional gaskets.
