Overview
“CHATO” is an exhilarating undertaking for a discerning owner. Launched in 1987 by the renowned Italian builder Baglietto, she was penned by the brilliant Alcide Sculati, who later oversaw the Atlantic record‑breaking “Destriero.” For devotees of this yard, “CHATO” remains an object of desire, unmatched for the purity of her timeless lines and captivating performance. Driven by twin MTU engines with waterjet propulsion, this high‑performance motor yacht and sport superyacht continues to rank among the ten fastest superyachts, more than 35 years after her first splash.
Detailed Description
Boat highlights
CHATO is the consummate alliance of performance and comfort, surging to astonishing top speeds with effortless composure. Its special aluminum hull—originally conceived for Italian Navy interceptor speedboats—confers unwavering seaworthiness in all weather and sea states. Thanks to hydrojet propulsion the yacht carries a shallow draft, unlocking near-limitless anchorage options and nimble pilotage close to shore. One of a kind, it blends modern Italian lines with a remarkably spacious interior to deliver a singular experience underway and at rest.
Key features
A singular Baglietto creation developing 7000 hp, CHATO marries military‑grade design and construction with astonishing speed. Propulsion by KaMeWa jets teams with the proven reliability of MTU power to deliver confidence and poise, while the yacht’s timeless architecture and all‑conditions seaworthiness make every passage as secure as it is stirring.
2008 refit
Completed at Monaco Marine Cogolin in the South of France, the 2008 refit elevated CHATO’s liveability and technical pedigree. A new galley was positioned within the main deck saloon area, complemented by an additional guest cabin with its own shower and toilet. The generous salon was reimagined with multiple bar amenities and a retractable TV integrated into a surround sound system. Technical upgrades included a watermaker; two Cummins Onan 27.5 kW generators installed port and starboard in the engine room; a completely new sewage system with a new tank; and an FM 200 automatic engine room fire‑extinguishing installation. Exterior comforts gained a teak sun lounge on the flybridge, while navigation and compliance were strengthened with an ECHOMAX radar, satellite TV, a mast upgrade, MCA standards alignment and full electrical compliance.
Accommodations
On the main deck, a large aft outdoor dining area sets the tone for convivial gatherings, while a dedicated technical room keeps systems discreetly organized. The generously sized saloon faces a refined bar and features a retractable TV with surround sound, and the forward galley incorporates both a dining nook and full cooking amenities. A sun lounge on the bow invites effortless relaxation. On the upper deck, the captain commands from an outdoor control station, complemented by sun lounges with a coffee table, an outdoor surround sound system and a bridge equipped with comprehensive navigation and communication systems. Below, the lower deck hosts a master cabin with an en suite bathroom with shower, a guest twin with en suite and shower, a guest double with en suite and shower, and a second guest double en suite forward. The crew area provides a captain’s cabin plus two bunk beds with a shared bathroom, ensuring discreet and efficient service.
Engine room
The engine room is equipped with two Cummins Onan 27.5 kW generators, with the port unit showing 4320 h and the starboard unit 2025 h. Supporting systems include a water maker, an air pump and comprehensive engine gauges and control, all laid out for clarity, safety and ease of maintenance.
Deck equipment
A starboard‑side accommodation ladder provides secure boarding, complemented by a retractable gangway that disappears seamlessly when underway. Tender operations are handled by a dedicated lifting crane, while a robust windlass and a starboard‑side winch manage ground tackle with authority. For ambiance across every zone, a deck outdoor sound system serves the stern, bow and flybridge.
May 1990 maritime reporter issue p.34 about MTU
“As reported in the May 1990 issue of Maritime Reporter (p. 34), Ray Carrell, MTU North America president and CEO, stated: ‘By awarding the contract to MTU, the U.S. Navy has demonstrated its commitment to objectively evaluating technologically advanced components for future high-speed naval vessels,’ said Ray Carrell, MTU North America president and CEO. ‘The 16V396TB94 engine, identical to those which recently powered the Gentry Eagle’s record-breaking trans-Atlantic crossing, was selected for this program because of its outstanding performance characteristics and its proven reliability. In addition, MTU was chosen for its ability to provide a complete, system-engineered waterjet propulsion package. We are very pleased to be working with the U.S. Navy on this project and look forward to the advances it will bring to the field of high-performance ship design technology.’ The 16V396TB94 engine is MTU’s most advanced version of the highly regarded Series 396 diesel engine program, used widely in many high-performance marine applications throughout the world.”
