Overview
“CHATO” is an electrifying opportunity for a discerning yachtsman. Delivered in 1987 by esteemed Italian builder Baglietto, with visionary Alcide Sculati as stylist, later responsible for the legendary “Destriero” Atlantic record-setter. “Chato” remains a luxury icon for devotees of this yard, unrivalled for the purity of her timeless lines and searing performance. Powered by twin MTU diesels with waterjet propulsion, she still ranks among the ten quickest superyachts, more than 35 years after her launch. A performance motor yacht, she exemplifies Baglietto’s craftsmanship.
Detailed Description
Boat highlights
CHATO is the consummate alliance of performance and comfort, surging to astonishing top speeds with effortless poise. Its special aluminum hull, originally conceived for an Italian Navy interceptor speedboat, assures outstanding seaworthiness in all weather and conditions. Thanks to hydrojet propulsion, it carries a shallow draft that unlocks endless anchorage possibilities and simplifies pilotage. One of a kind, it boasts modern Italian lines and a spacious interior.
Key features
This one-of-a-kind Baglietto harnesses 7000 hp and channels it through KaMeWa jet propulsion, combining military-grade design and construction with MTU’s proven reliability to deliver truly astonishing speeds. Built to be seaworthy in any conditions, it marries raw performance with a timeless architectural profile that remains as compelling in motion as it is at rest.
2008 refit
The refit was conducted at Monaco Marine Cogolin in the South of France, transforming both comfort and capability. A new galley was positioned within the main-deck saloon area, complemented by an additional guest cabin complete with shower and toilet. The generous-size saloon was reconfigured with multiple bar amenities, while a flybridge teak sun lounge was installed for open-air relaxation. Technical enhancements included the installation of a watermaker, a new sewage system with a new tank, and two Cummins generators of 27.5 kW installed to port and starboard in the engine room. Safety and standards were elevated with an FM-200 automatic engine-room fire extinguisher, compliance to MCA standards, an ECHOMAX radar, a mast upgrade, satellite TV, and full electrical compliance.
Accommodations
On the main deck, a large aft outdoor dining area sets the stage for relaxed entertaining, flowing into a technical room and a generously sized saloon appointed with a facing bar, a retractable TV, and a surround sound system. Forward, the galley includes a dedicated dining area and full cooking amenities, while the bow is crowned by an inviting sun lounge.
The upper deck elevates open-air living with a captain’s outdoor control station, sun lounges with a coffee table, and an outdoor surround sound system, complemented by a bridge equipped with navigation and communication equipment.
On the lower deck, the master cabin features an en suite bathroom with shower; a guest twin cabin also offers an en suite bathroom with shower; and a guest double includes an en suite bathroom with shower, joined by a second guest double en suite forward. The crew area provides a captain’s cabin plus two bunk beds with a shared bathroom.
Engine room
The engine room showcases two Cummins Onan 27.5 kW generators providing dependable onboard power, with the port unit showing 4,320 hours and the starboard at 2,025 hours. Supporting systems include a water maker, an air pump, and engine gauges and control for precise monitoring and command.
Deck equipment
Purposeful deck equipment elevates both convenience and control, with a starboard-side accommodation ladder ensuring secure boarding and a retractable gangway that stows seamlessly when not in use. A tender with a lifting crane simplifies handling, while a windlass and a starboard-side winch provide confident capability for anchoring and line work. Enhancing life on deck, a deck outdoor sound system delivers rich audio across the stern, bow, and fly.
May 1990 Maritime Reporter issue, page 34: MTU
By awarding its contract to MTU, the U.S. Navy signaled a decisive commitment to objectively evaluating cutting-edge components for the next generation of high-speed naval vessels. At the heart of this initiative is the 16V396TB94, identical to the engines that propelled Gentry Eagle on its record-breaking trans-Atlantic crossing, chosen for its outstanding performance characteristics and proven reliability. MTU’s capability to furnish a complete, system-engineered waterjet propulsion package further distinguished the offering, ensuring seamless integration and efficiency from powerplant to jet. This collaboration with the U.S. Navy is set to advance the state of high-performance ship design technology. The 16V396TB94 represents the most advanced iteration of MTU’s highly regarded Series 396 diesel engine program, a benchmark power solution widely deployed in high-performance marine applications around the world.
