Overview
MYSTIC is a majestic tall ship sailing yacht—a three‑masted, gaff‑rigged square‑topsail schooner. She comfortably hosts 36 passengers and 12 crew for overnight voyages and extended passages, and up to 150 guests for day charters. She is fully certified as a commercial charter yacht for coastal and open‑ocean routes (certificate valid through Feb. 2022).
Purpose‑built for the charter market, she was launched in 2007. A substantial refit followed in 2015, and the present owner acquired her in 2017. After a successful charter program in the Bahamas, she has returned to Virginia and is now offered for sale.
MYSTIC’s scale, accommodations, relatively recent build, and classic yacht aesthetic make her ideal for a thriving commercial operation and/or sail training vessel. Her robust construction and commanding presence suit her as an ocean expedition yacht, and she could just as easily be reimagined as a refined private yacht. Detailed Description
Overview
Step aboard for a clear walkthrough of Mystic, a three-deckhouse tall sailing yacht designed for comfort and capability. On deck you will find a forward deckhouse with the passenger lounge, a midships deckhouse with the dining salon, and an aft deckhouse dedicated to navigation and the captain’s area, with a traditional crew forecastle forward.
The forecastle provides practical accommodations for 8 crew in single bunks, with shared head and shower facilities and ample storage, keeping long passages efficient and organized.
The forward deckhouse serves as the passenger lounge, flooded with light from large windows on both sides and finished with handsome joinery and varnished teak-and-holly soles. Comfortable lounge seating creates an easy social hub around a bar equipped with an ice maker, a compact refrigerator, and a wine cooler. A classic upright piano greets you at the forward end, while a television on the aft bulkhead adds versatile entertainment. At the center, a stairway leads below to eight guest cabins. Each cabin features either a double berth or upper-and-lower berths, a sink, polished teak-and-holly flooring, portlights, and individual air‑conditioning controls. This area offers two showers and two heads shared among the cabins, plus a cozy library nook with bookshelves.
The midships deckhouse is the dining salon, again lined with generous windows and refined carpentry over teak-and-holly soles. Six dining tables provide flexible seating, complemented by a coffee bar with an ice maker and a microwave, and a large refrigerator for service. A day head is positioned aft for convenience. In the center, stairs descend to another eight passenger cabins: six mirror the forward layout with either double or upper-and-lower berths, a sink, portlights, and independent air conditioning, sharing two showers and two heads. Two additional VIP cabins each include a double berth, a portlight, a large storage closet, and a private ensuite head with shower. An aft stair within the dining salon offers direct access to the galley, the laundry room, and the engine room.
Aft of the dining salon sits the raised steering station for confident control and visibility. Immediately behind, the aft deckhouse houses the navigation area and the captain’s domain, including a chart room and the vessel’s electronic and navigation suite. The ship’s office is here as well, with stairs down to the captain’s quarters, which include three bunks and a head with shower.
On deck, wide side decks run the length of the vessel, with permanent deck‑box seating on both sides. Removable deck tables with chairs create easy outdoor zones for relaxing, dining, and sunset drinks, and two outside showers are ready to rinse away salt and sand. In 2015, the hull bottom was blasted back to original steel and recoated with four coats of Bar Rust and fresh antifouling. Handling and safety equipment include a 100 hp bow thruster installed in 2015; Navy‑type ground tackle with one 100 lb primary anchor and one 100 lb Fisherman anchor, approximately 500 ft of 3/4" chain, and 500 ft of 2 1/2" nylon rode; a 15 hp CME hydraulic vertical capstan; and comprehensive safety gear for 160 persons including rafts with rescue platforms, a Kidde CO2 fire‑extinguishing system, portable fire extinguishers, an EPIRB 406 MHz, PFDs, and liferings.
The sail plan is purposeful and versatile, with 15 sails totaling 8,500 sq ft, including square sails on the foremast and gaff topsails on the two after masts. The wardrobe comprises the mainsail, mizzen, foresail, main topsail, mizzen topsail, course, upper topsail, lower topsail, raffee, maintop staysail, fore staysail, outer jib, middle jib, and a jib topsail. Rigging details include a rig height of 110 ft, three keel‑stepped barquentine masts, 6x25 galvanized‑wire standing rigging, and steel chainplates.
Engineering is robust and reliable: a Lugger 6140 by Alaskan Diesel delivers 500 hp from 6 cylinders, cooled by a fresh‑water Luger system, turning a 64" fixed three‑bladed propeller. Maneuvering is aided by the 100 hp bow thruster fitted in 2015. Ship’s power comes from a Northern Lights 99 kW diesel generator new in 2015, plus a Northern Lights 55 kW 6‑cylinder diesel generator with fresh‑water cooling. Electrical systems include 110/220 VAC and 12 VDC. The bilge system is based on 1,500 GPH pumps in the machinery spaces on 220 VAC. Fresh water independence is ensured by two Sea Recovery STC 9000 reverse‑osmosis desalinators, with hot water supplied by two heaters at 50 gallons each. Engine‑room ventilation uses free‑air flow supported by AC and 12 VDC blowers, including a 220 VAC 1200 CFM blower, aligned with class requirements.
Navigation and electronics are well specified: Furuno radar pairs with two Garmin 76 GPS units, a Uniden VHF radio, a Raymarine wind indicator, digital depth sounder and knot log, Icom SSB, Furuno Navtex, and a Ritchie compass for confident passage‑making.
The 2015 refit was comprehensive: the hull was taken to bare steel and protected with four coats of Bar Rust plus new antifouling; rigs were unstepped and refit; a new 100 hp bow thruster and a new 99 kW Northern Lights generator were installed; major plumbing was renewed, including Royal Flush heads by Headhunter; most interior spaces received new teak‑and‑holly soles; and mattresses and bedding were replaced throughout.
