Overview
1907 Custom MV Haganes
Formerly a storied classic expedition/research motor charter yacht in Asia, this elegant explorer superyacht is now based in The Bahamas.
Detailed Description
History
Built to work and destined to impress, MV Haganes is a storied classic ideal for weddings, honeymoons, film work, research or pure relaxation. Air conditioned and laid out with multiple cabins, she invites fishing and diving adventures, and her careful stewardship through the decades is evident throughout. A 109-year-old former whaling ship, she presently awaits a thoughtful round of TLC after about 5 years out of service—an expected haulout with bottom painting and a thorough pass through her onboard systems—before returning to the oceans she knows so well.
The HAGANES has lived many lives and worn many names. Launched in 1907 by Nyland Verksted in Oslo as building number 168, she was delivered in March 1907 to H. Ellefsen in Mjoafjord, Iceland and christened GUNNAR HAMUNDARSON. Her colorful history includes a conversion to a private yacht for the chairman of “King Oscar” Sardines. In 1938, as Europe edged toward war, she was chartered by the Norwegian Navy and served as a watch boat; in 1940, she was taken by the “DIE DEUTCHE KRIEGSMARINE” and converted to a patrol boat. Around 1964, she became a coastal freighter, adopting the fundamental hull form and layout that endure today.
From then until 2003 she passed through several owners, before being rescued and lovingly restored by a couple who transformed her into a mini cruise ship for charter in the warm, clear waters of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The current sellers purchased her there and crossed the ocean on her own bottom to Mexico for a refit, then put her to work; she now rests in Freeport Harbor in the Bahamas. In 2010, a survey and research company acquired the vessel and completed a comprehensive refit for deep-ocean survey work, installing a high-end suite of electronics and meticulously refreshing every onboard system. Research documents her refit cadence as follows: Refit: 1928 / 1938 / 1940 / 1952 / 1965 / 1995 / 2003 / 2008/2010. Having since acquired a larger platform, the owners are now offering Haganes for sale.
Bluewater by birth and by temperament, she can sail anywhere in the world on her own bottom and remains a proven, versatile platform—equally at ease hosting elegant celebrations and cinematic projects as she is supporting research expeditions. If you seek a head turner with an extraordinary provenance, this is your girl.
