Detailed Description
Section name
Charm III, a classic schooner, was designed by the renowned John Alden in 1923, originally for his own use. Her only sister ship, Malabar V, shares a rich heritage, with Charm III being built in Sweden in 1928. For the past four decades, Charm III has been under the careful stewardship of her current owner, who acquired her in 1980 on the Yealm River in England. Since then, they have devoted countless hours to maintaining and enhancing this magnificent vessel.
Under the meticulous care of her present owners, Charm III has undergone several major refits, always executed to the highest standards with no expense spared. Currently, she is located at Road Bay, Anguilla, having recently completed an extensive refit by Woodstock Boatbuilders in Antigua. This refurbishing included the replacement of several frames, although the refit was somewhat curtailed due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, Charm III is now in impeccable condition, making it an ideal time for her to transition to new ownership.
Charm III has a storied racing history, having competed successfully in numerous Caribbean regattas, including several Antigua Classic Yacht Regattas. Most notably, in 2019, she triumphed in the Vintage Schooner Class at Antigua, despite arriving late and missing the first day of racing. Known as a superb sea-boat, Charm III is nearly unbeatable when sailed by a skilled and enthusiastic crew. Over the years, she has become the yacht to beat in the highly competitive Concours D’elegance at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, boasting six trophies to her name.
The current owners are committed to ensuring that Charm III is sold to someone who will sail, maintain, and cherish her with the same dedication and care she has received thus far. They are adamant about finding the right person who will continue to uphold the standards to which she has become accustomed.
Charm III's heritage is deeply rooted in the legacy of John Alden's yacht designs. Notably, Malabar V was the first in the series to be equipped with an engine, a Scripps F-4 driving a feathering propeller. This schooner, with design number 215, measures 49 feet in length, with a beam of 12 feet and a draft of 7 feet 3 inches. Charm III first appeared on the British Register in 1932, owned by a gentleman member of The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Mr. Harry Skeet Broom. She changed hands several times before being acquired by her current owner in July 1980, who undertook a comprehensive rebuild between 1987 and 2000.
Charm III is not just a yacht; she is a piece of maritime history, a testament to the timeless elegance and performance of John Alden's designs. Her next chapter awaits with an owner who will appreciate her storied past and continue to sail her into the future.
