Overview

Years ago in Taiwan, I spent time with designer Arthur Defever, debating which of his many creations he held dearest. His answer was clear: the POC (Performance Offshore Cruiser) series—celebrated for their salty profile, solid ocean-going stance, and a touch more pace than classic trawlers thanks to their semi-displacement form. His and Hers stands as an exceptional 53' POC, pampered by owners who have treated her like an only child. She has been meticulously and professionally maintained and continually updated—no detail overlooked, no expense spared. Fresh from her summer haven in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and now back in Stuart, she will impress the most discerning yachtsman, from her mirror-finish topsides to a pristine, white-glove engine room.

Her current owners are highly experienced mariners, having logged 45,500 nautical miles aboard His and Hers since 2008. They’ve made a dozen North–South passages and ventured as far as Nova Scotia. This is a genuine bluewater seagoing yacht—an elegant motor yacht and offshore cruiser with a semi-displacement hull that delivers a supremely sea-kindly ride and remarkably comfortable onboard living. As a refined trawler yacht, capable passagemaker, and long-range cruiser, she embodies the best of the pilothouse and liveaboard categories: reliable, graceful, and purpose-built for extended coastal and offshore adventures.

Detailed Description

Accommodations

Step aboard HIS AND HERS via the lovely covered aft deck and through double doors into a custom interior of beautifully matched teak, where a bright, airy main saloon greets you with large windows and superb sightlines. To starboard, a well-conceived bar with a U-Line refrigerator and ice maker keeps refreshments within easy reach for effortless entertaining on the aft deck, while a private companionway to starboard leads directly down to the master suite and the engine room. Across the generous saloon to port, a wraparound settee with two hi/lo tables, two barrel chairs, and abundant storage invites relaxed conversation, with a straight settee and additional storage to starboard. Forward, the thoughtfully planned galley with full-sized appliances opens to the pilothouse, where a lower helm and a comfortable bench allow guests to share in the joy of navigation; this command post carries a full electronics suite, three Imtra two-speed self-parking windshield wipers, expansive windows, and custom Dutch doors. A forward companionway leads to the guest quarters comprising two suites, while internal stairs lift you to a massive flybridge—complete with a dance floor.

The galley is a seagoing chef’s delight, finished with Corian countertops and extensive cabinetry with drawers above and below, all framing an open workspace with double stainless-steel sinks set under port windows fitted with custom shades; even a custom under-counter trash drawer has been engineered into the plan. A 22 cubic foot, side-by-side, full-sized stainless steel Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer (2017) anchors the appliance package alongside a stainless 4-burner range with overhead oven and microwave, and a breakfast bar where gourmet creations are presented to the delight of the crew aboard HIS AND HERS.

In the main saloon, varied seating beckons for reading or movie nights on the 32' flat screen TV fed by a KVH satellite antenna. Custom blinds and drapes dress the large side and aft windows, and the teak-and-holly sole complements the warm teak cabinetry to complete a space that feels like a true home away from home.

The pilothouse continues the theme of practical elegance with a large settee over generous underseat storage, custom-designed Dutch doors to port and starboard featuring bespoke upper screens crafted for the current owners, three large chart drawers ready for backup paper charts, and numerous additional stowage solutions. Electronics here include a COM M604 VHF radio, Raymarine E165 MFD, Raytheon ST60 data monitor, Raymarine depth/speed monitor, Raymarine autopilot control with remote smart controller, Glendinning synchronizer, Gyro Gale Stabilizer control, a Samsung 15-inch slave screen tied to the MFD, ACR spotlight control, and a Ritchie PowerDamp compass. The MFD ingests AIS, Sirius weather, and FLIR camera inputs, along with full chart and navigation data. Altogether, this lower command center of HIS AND HERS is beautifully laid out, providing generous working room for both Captain and Navigator.

Descending the handmade teak companionway rail directly from the saloon, the master stateroom becomes a serene sanctuary with a centerline queen berth topped by a custom coil-spring mattress, dual hanging lockers, and abundant cabinet and drawer storage. Six portlights with tasteful drapery, a vanity/computer desk, and a teak-and-holly sole underscore the space’s quiet luxury. The en-suite head features an enclosed shower and a Dometic fresh-water electric-flush, self-macerating system (2015).

Amidships, the guest suite offers easy comfort with a new custom mattress (2018), two portlights with custom drapes, and twin hi/lo bunks to suit another couple or two children, plus reading lights, a vanity/computer desk, and ample storage via a hanging locker and drawers, all atop a yachty teak-and-holly sole. The private en-suite head secures total guest privacy, with a separate shower stall, storage, a fresh-water vacuum-flush Dometic head (2017), and a portlight; commercial-grade vinyl wallpaper in an elegant pattern was added in 2017, complemented by the same classic sole.

Your VIPs forward will appreciate a large V-berth with insert and custom mattresses (2018), illuminated by three portlights and a deck hatch, with hanging lockers and copious storage. The separate private head has been upgraded, including a fresh-water vacuum-flush Dometic head (2017), commercial-grade wallpaper, and a beautifully varnished teak-and-holly sole that is a pleasure to the eye; this VIP en-suite is so comfortable that guests may never want to leave.

The flybridge of HIS AND HERS is truly expansive and accessible either from the pilothouse via internal stairs or from the aft deck via a ladder/hatch combination. A full forward helm with storage beneath delivers excellent visibility from this commanding upper station. The bridge is configured for convivial gatherings with L-shaped seating to port, a single helm seat, and a starboard bench; a hinged radar arch makes slipping under low bridges a simple affair. Additional aft deck boxes add seating, while non-skid decks and stainless-steel rails enhance seagoing comfort. Equipment and electronics on the flybridge include an ICOM M604 VHF radio, Raymarine E125 MFD, Raytheon data repeater, EPIRB, Gyro Gale Stabilizer control, the aforementioned dance floor, an eight-man Viking life raft that is current, and an electric dinghy davit rated for 1500 lbs. The 11.5 ft Caribe center-console dinghy carries a Honda 30 hp electric-start, power-tilt outboard and is fully outfitted with radio, depth finder, anchor with line, fire extinguishers (current), and fenders—everything needed for safe, fun runs to the beach or explorations in snug coves.

HIS AND HERS’ systems have been modernized with a six-station intercom updated in 2016 (pilothouse, engine room, flybridge, and each stateroom) and both 12v and 110v electrical services. Battery power includes two 8D 12v start batteries new in 2020, two additional 8D 12v start batteries six years old, and two 4D start batteries serving the two generators, all supported by a 40 amp Charles smart battery charger. A robust sound system delivers audio through internal speakers in every cabin, on the covered aft deck, and on the flybridge. For ship’s power, twin PHASOR generators purchased a year apart but matched for simplified spares handling include a 21 kW PHASOR (2017) showing 1300 hours and a 12.5 kW PHASOR (2019) with 50 hours.

Accessed through a full-height door opposite the master, the spotless engine room welcomes the owner-operator with an alleyway between twin Caterpillar 3208TA 375 hp engines. Oil and all filters are changed annually in August across all machinery, and in June (2020) Milton Caterpillar replaced coolant pumps on both mains. Each engine is protected by twin Racor 1000FG 30-micron fuel filters and a 10-micron spin-on fuel filter. Forward of the engines, a shelf accommodates a full-sized washer, dryer, and the water pump. To starboard sit the 21 kW PHASOR generator (2017) and an ESI 2-micron fuel polishing system; to port are the 12.5 kW PHASOR generator (2019) and a Raritan 20 gallon water heater. Each generator benefits from a Racor 500FG 10-micron fuel filter, an additional Racor 2-micron fuel filter, and a PHASOR 10-micron fuel filter—redundancy being paramount. A Charles 40 amp smart battery charger mounts on the aft bulkhead alongside components of the Gyro Gale Stabilizer system. Installed in 2016, the Gyro Gale pneumatic stabilizer features four external fins, an air compressor, an expansion tank, and controls in both the engine room and the pilothouse; the fins were upgraded to a new design in 2020. The beauty of this pneumatic design is the peace of mind it brings—no fear of catastrophic failure with hot hydraulic fluid spraying throughout the engine space.

Fresh water is held in two 200 gallon tanks aft of the fuel tanks, while custom 400 gallon fuel tanks lie forward of the engines with the fuel manifold on the forward bulkhead beneath the shelf; sight gauges on the tanks simplify fuel checks. A custom fiberglass 98.74 gallon holding tank resides in the bilge between the engines. Thoughtful layout makes all critical service points easy to reach, and the entire space presents as crisply as the rest of the yacht. Underway, HIS AND HERS is impressively economical, cruising at 9–10 knots while sipping just 7.5–8 gallons per hour.

On deck, safety and readiness are a constant priority. The owners’ pride shines through: before each year’s travels every fire extinguisher is inspected, all oil and filters are changed, the Halon system is verified, the life raft is in service, and all Coast Guard safety items are kept current; they even file a FLOAT PLAN before heading off on their North-to-South adventures—an uncommon level of meticulous seamanship.

The main deck is equally dialed-in. Ground tackle comprises a Maxwell 3500 twin-gypsy anchor windlass serving a 60 lb stainless steel hinged plow anchor with 200 feet of chain and a 70 lb West Marine fluke anchor with 250 feet of chain. Non-skid decks are framed by stainless-steel side rails with teak toe rails and cap rails, with boarding gates to port and starboard. A Marquipt boarding ladder can be mounted on either side, as can a Marquipt folding boarding stair assembly. A transom door on the aft deck leads to the new fiberglass swim platform (2020) with a mounted swim ladder, and four stainless-steel fender racks dress the bow rails. A comfortable bench seat sits directly in front of the pilothouse. Clean, uncluttered, and easy to navigate, the decks reflect the same “ready to go” ethos: HIS AND HERS has wanted for nothing—from paint to oil changes. As experienced yachtspeople, the owners carry an overabundance of spares and safety equipment, keep every system in top condition, and routinely make overnight passages with just the two of them aboard—confident, because everything works.
