The Borsaw 40 "Aries" is a yacht with a storied history that dates back to January 1946, when the Owens Yacht Company, renowned for building cruising and fishing powerboats as well as supplying the Navy with landing craft and rescue boats, surprised the sailing world by introducing a 40-foot cutter designed for both racing and cruising. This vessel was touted as sea-kindly, fast, and comfortable, a departure from the typical designs of the time, which were usually crafted by a select few designers in New York or Boston and took about two years from contract to launch. The Owens cutters were built in Baltimore, Maryland, and one of the most famous among them was Ash Brown’s Carousel in San Diego. These boats participated in various prestigious races, including the 1946-47 St. Pete to Havana race, Annapolis-Oxford, Polar Island, Chicago-Mackinac Island, Grosse Pointe regatta, Put in Bay, Swiftsure Lightship 1947, and the Chesapeake Fall series 1947. The wooden design was a resounding success, and one of these wooden boats was used as a mold for construction in Buffalo. A Norwegian craftsman was brought in to complete the interior work on six of these boats, known as the Borsaw 40, named after the last names of the original six buyers. These were built in fiberglass, and the mold was later sold to the Allied Boat Company, which modified the transom and rudder to develop the renowned Allied 39. Hinckley’s famous version, the Hinckley 41, known as Finn Mac Camhaill, won many races with its shorter keel and spade rudder, earning the name Hinckley Competition 41.
Locally, the Borsaw 40 has garnered numerous accolades, winning races and regattas while turning heads in every port. Although it is an older boat that will require cosmetic maintenance, its structural integrity remains as solid as the day it was built. For those who appreciate the classic lines of sharp bows, long overhanging sterns, and a powerful rig that excels in both light and heavy airs, this boat is a perfect match. "Aries" has been a consistent winner of silverware in the Western New York area and is well-known among local sailing enthusiasts. The current owner is willing to provide an orientation to any prospective buyer, covering the ship and its systems in detail.
Included with the yacht is a comprehensive binder containing all equipment and manuals from the boat's construction to the present day, along with all related correspondence. Additionally, there is a set of slides documenting the building of the boat, offering a unique glimpse into its storied past.
