Overview
Performance, craftsmanship, and uncompromising luxury are woven into the Southerly 48’s DNA, as you would expect from the experienced team at Ocean Shipyard. With assertive yet graceful lines, she is sleek, powerful, and unmistakably modern, and her meticulous build and flawless finish set her apart from ordinary production yachts. This luxury sailing yacht reflects the proud heritage of British yachtbuilding, blending understated elegance with real capability, a refined deck-saloon ambiance, and superb ergonomics that the whole crew will appreciate.
Conceived as a true bluewater cruiser and performance cruiser, the Southerly 48 marries a variable-draft swing keel, twin rudders, and a substantial skeg to deliver poise, stability, and rewarding pace for offshore sailing. With the keel raised she draws just 3' 3", opening shallow anchorages and tucked-away harbors that other boats her size cannot reach; with the keel down she offers impressive upwind bite, control, and the balanced feel of a capable cruiser-racer. Ocean-going by nature yet inviting as a liveaboard, she combines range and comfort for world cruising while remaining nimble and confidence-inspiring in coastal waters.
The Southerly line encompasses the Southerly 42 and Southerly 48, and every yacht is built to order, allowing thoughtful semi-custom tailoring to suit your cruising vision.
Detailed Description
Overview
Hull, deck, and swing keel. The Southerly 48, crafted by Ocean Shipyard, is designed and built to UKCA and EU Category A (Ocean) certification, delivered with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty and a five-year hull warranty against osmosis. The heavy-duty composite hull is hand laid to Ocean Shipyard’s precise laminating system with multi-axial and unidirectional reinforcements; the keel box is an integral element of the lay-up, and sandwich stiffening runs the full length of the topsides. All main bulkheads are bonded and laminated into both hull and deck. A white gelcoat finish is standard, with boot top and cavita line detailing, while the deck is bonded toughened glass in recessed moldings, with tinted deck saloon windows and hull ports, opening deck hatches and glazed ports in various sizes, and fixed ventilators throughout the deck for continuous airflow.
The signature Southerly Variable Draft Swing Keel amplifies capability and confidence. The fixed ballast is a cast iron grounding plate that also stiffens the keel and housing assembly, set into a hull recess around the keel box and secured on stainless steel bolts. The aerofoil-shaped cast iron keel carries a stainless-steel pivot at the leading edge and is raised and lowered by a Dyneema pennant and a hydraulic ram powered by an electric pump with a hand-operated backup; all hydraulics are easily accessible for service. Electric keel control and a keel position gauge are fitted at the helm, with additional electric and manual controls located adjacent to the keel, and a stainless-steel locking pin secures the keel when raised. The deck is a hand-laid composite sandwich with foam core stiffening, mechanically fastened and bonded to the hull along its entire length and to every main bulkhead, creating a strong, integrated structure. Practical touches abound: a deep foredeck sail locker with access to the chain locker, and a composite arch reinforced with carbon for strength and clean running rigging organization.
Sails and rigging. The Southerly 48 carries a versatile Solent rig: a powerful inner self-tacking jib, an outer lightweight genoa, and an in-mast furling mainsail. With options for mast-mounted poles and a bowsprit fitting, she is prepared to stretch her legs on any point of sail. The specification includes the in-mast furling mainsail; a self-tacking furling jib with short vertical battens; a lightweight genoa with white UV protection on the headsails; an anodized aluminum spar package; a solid sprung rod kicker vang; 1x19 wire standing rigging; two winches on the mast; and Antal tracks dedicated to the main, genoa, and jib halyards. The Solent rig features double swept-back spreaders and two headsails on furling gear for effortless power and control.
Deck hardware is engineered for dependable bluewater use. A stainless steel pulpit incorporates a navigational light bracket, while stainless steel stanchions and guard wires with side gates provide secure movement fore and aft. At the bow, a stemhead fitting with a bow roller partners perfectly with the 32 kg Delta anchor and 60 meters of galvanized chain, aided by an electric windlass with foredeck foot switches. A stainless steel pushpit includes a navigational light bracket, and there are bow, midships, and stern cleats with rubbing strakes for protection. Practicality continues with a stern bathing ladder, fuel and water deck fillers, and holding tank pump-out fittings on deck. Rope clutches on the coachroof manage the running rigging, assisted by a single manual cabin-top winch at the companionway, primary winches at each helm for the main and jib sheets, and two secondary winches for genoa sheets. Stainless steel grab handles on the coachroof complete the secure ergonomics.
In the cockpit, twin helms are each equipped with a stainless steel 36" wheel and served by two compasses for precise navigation. A cockpit table with folding leaves, internal stowage, and a sturdy handrail anchors convivial life on deck, complemented by deep lazarette lockers aft of the cockpit. The sliding companionway hatch features a teak surround with removable washboards and an instrument panel above, while a dedicated gas bottle locker resides in the starboard lazarette. Winch handle pockets and three safety harness padeyes reinforce readiness at sea.
Mechanical systems emphasize reliability and range. Propulsion is by a Yanmar 80 HP, four-cylinder, fresh-water-cooled diesel with a single-lever manual throttle, protected by a water strainer with removable filter and supported by an engine room fan. Fuel is carried in two non-metallic tanks with a selector manifold and inline filter for a combined capacity of 175 US gallons. Gauges monitor fuel, water, and holding tanks, and a fireport adds safety. An 80 amp alternator feeds the electrical system, and drive is delivered through a three-blade fixed propeller to twin semi-balanced rudders for assured control. Helm authority is enhanced by two 36" stainless steel steering wheels and an emergency tiller for redundancy.
Electrical and plumbing are governed by the sophisticated C-Zone digital control and monitoring suite. The 24V domestic system is supported by a dedicated engine start battery, LED cabin lighting, and a comprehensive LED navigation light array comprising bow and stern lights, a masthead tricolor with all-round white anchor light, and a deck flood light. Choose either 110V or 230V shore supply via a shore power connection, with a battery charger and plentiful sockets in all cabins, the galley, salon, and navigation station. Freshwater is stored in a non-metallic tank with a capacity of 106 US gallons, feeding hot and cold systems via a calorifier with electric immersion heater and an engine loop. Waste is neatly managed by separate grey-waste electric sump boxes to both heads and separate black-water holding tanks in both heads. A manual bilge pump in the cockpit and electric bilge pumps throughout deliver robust dewatering capability.
The interior celebrates raised-deck-saloon living. Down below, the Southerly 48 presents a raised saloon that floods with light and offers commanding views at anchor or under way through expansive deck saloon windows. A raised, separate navigation station sits in close proximity to the galley to create a highly sociable, seakindly living space. Configure her with a two-cabin arrangement or opt for a three-cabin layout; each cabin benefits from its own heads and abundant internal stowage, amplified by the expansive lazarette. The C-Zone digital monitoring and control system, fitted as standard, simplifies day-to-day management of onboard systems. Interior joinery is in solid oak and oak-faced, marine-quality plywood with a lacquered finish; linings are fabric-covered plywood or GRP where appropriate; cabin soles are marine-grade flooring throughout; and worktops in both galley and heads are hard-wearing. Saloon fabrics are selected from the interior options range, and every cabin features comfortable foam mattresses.
The galley is thoroughly equipped for passagemaking. Twin stainless steel sinks with a mixer tap crown the workspace, supported by a front-loading 130 l stainless steel refrigerator that is air cooled, with an available keel-cooling upgrade. Cold storage is expanded with a front-loading freezer and a top-loading, air-cooled freezer, which can likewise be upgraded to keel cooling. A solenoid remote gas cut-off tap serves gas installations, and storage cupboards organize provisions. Cooking is effortless on a fully gimballed gas cooker with three burners featuring fail-safe devices on all burners, a grill, an oven, and a robust grab rail, with an electric upgrade available for those who prefer it.
At the navigation station to starboard, a chart table with a hinged lid reveals generous stowage, complemented by a separate compartment for loose items. The chart table pedestal houses the AC panel in a dedicated cupboard, while a comfortable chart seat with backrest faces forward under a red night light. A 12" plotter pod, finished to match the chosen interior wood, is mounted on the chart table to accept a plotter (not included), and a large stowage area beneath the chart seat can accommodate an optional washing machine.
The raised saloon provides elevated seating for six around a fixed-pedestal saloon table, with an available saloon conversion option, and starboard-side seating paired with top lockers for elegant storage.
The forward head features a manual fresh-water-flush marine toilet, a washbasin with mixer tap, a separate shower with a door, and a locker with a vanity mirror and storage. The forward cabin offers a centerline double berth with a storage drawer beneath, a triple-unit wardrobe, tall lockers to port and starboard, and a vanity unit desk with stool. Aft, the owner’s cabin mirrors that sense of calm with a centerline double berth over a storage drawer, a hanging locker to port and a shelving locker to starboard, and welcoming seating on either side of the berth. The aft cabin head mirrors the forward: a manual fresh-water-flush marine toilet, a washbasin with mixer tap, a separate shower with a door, and a locker with vanity mirror and storage.
Loose gear and safety equipment are supplied for immediate cruising comfort: four fenders with warps (fender socks not included), two winch handles, two sets of companionway lock keys, fire extinguishers in each cabin and the galley, a fire blanket in the galley, and an emergency boarding ladder.
