Overview

Sea-ready showcase of an iconic luxury motor yacht cruiser, with extensive service and thoughtful upgrades completed over the past 2.5 years. Meticulously maintained by a dedicated full-time professional captain in recent years.

Detailed Description

Intro and broker comments

The Hylas 54 is the quintessential center-cockpit cruiser for couples or owner/operators seeking to cruise long-range in style and comfort with minimal crew requirements. The collective fleet of this celebrated and proven design has logged many millions of blue-water miles and has held its value exceptionally well over the years, with most examples well-loved and meticulously maintained, many benefiting from multiple major refits just before or after a round-the-world jaunt. FREE RANGE has enjoyed all of that and more, standing out in this category thanks to the professional care and maintenance of a full-time captain for the past two and a half years. The current owner pursues an open-checkbook maintenance plan, and it shows—FREE RANGE is turnkey for her next owner as this one looks to step up into a larger Hylas.

Notable recent maintenance and upgrades

Meticulously updated from 2023 through 2026, this yacht presents in turnkey condition. In October 2025 the standing rigging was renewed following a full rig inspection, while 2026 brought a new cockpit enclosure in canvas and Eisenglass, freshly stripped and varnished interior floorboards, and a bottom that was sanded and painted in June. Running rigging was replaced in 2024, complemented by several recent sails added between 2023 and 2024, and custom removable mast pulpits—also known as granny bars—installed in 2025. Furler motors were serviced and overhauled in 2024; that same year the deck and rigging hardware, including blocks and other components, were overhauled or replaced, and both the dodger and bimini were renewed. Energy and electrical systems were modernized with new solar panels and charge controllers in 2025, several new instruments and electronics introduced across 2024 to 2025, and comprehensive battery replacements—house and start batteries, as well as windlass and thruster batteries—completed over 2024 to 2025. Mechanical care included a major service with a top-end overhaul of the engine and generator in 2025, a Gori three-blade propeller replaced in 2024, and a 10 hp Mercury outboard engine added in 2023. Comfort and security were further elevated with a Splendide WDV2200XVD washer/dryer replaced in 2025 and a Siren security system with two hardwired cameras.

Interior

The raised center cockpit of the H54 unlocks a class-leading interior volume, where an enormous salon flows seamlessly into the galley and navigation station. Deck-height windows bathe the space in natural light and promote excellent ventilation, while three well-appointed cabins provide refined comfort for extended cruising.

Aft, the beam-wide owner’s stateroom indulges with a king-sized berth, an ensuite head with stall shower, abundant light and ventilation, and exceptional storage. The standard settee was thoughtfully eliminated in favor of additional storage lockers, and a flat screen TV graces the forward bulkhead with a huge hanging locker below. His-and-hers lockers and drawers line either side of the stateroom, ensuring impeccable organization.

Proceeding forward through the passageway, a large bow stateroom features a queen-sized berth, complemented to port by a guest cabin with a double/single convertible berth that can double as a work bench. These two cabins share a well-appointed head, also with an ensuite stall shower.

Throughout the interior, cabinetry and doors are crafted in teak with an ebony inlay, and the passageway doors showcase squared bases with rounded upper corners. The soles are bamboo with teak inlay, accentuated by a double-grooved design element around the main salon, galley, and cabin fiddles. A teak facia carries along the coachroof in all cabins, including the main salon and galley, where beautiful Giallo California Granite counters elevate the workspace. Upholstery is UltraSuede, and forty-one Newport LED recessed lights on dimmers have been added throughout to set the perfect ambiance.

As you will find on the equipment list, FREE RANGE offers all of the interior comfort systems you’d expect in a cruising yacht of this caliber.

Galley equipment

The galley is outfitted with a Frigoboat top- and front-loading refrigerator and a Frigoboat top- and front-loading freezer, a Force-10 three-burner gimbaled stove with oven and broiler, a Breville Joule Smart Oven/Air Fryer Pro new in June 2025, large double stainless-steel sinks, and an Edgestar dishwasher.

Comfort systems

Designed for effortless living at sea, the Spectra Newport 400 MKII water‑maker delivers over 12 gallons per hour to keep fresh water plentiful, while a Splendide WDV2200XVD washer/dryer streamlines onboard laundry. The aft head was upgraded to the Jabsco Quietflush in 2025, enhancing comfort with quiet, reliable performance.

Sails

The sail inventory is impressively curated with a new North NPL Tour mainsail with vertical battens from 2023, complemented by a Dacron 135% genoa with a foam luff and UV cover from 2024, a Doyle Dacron 56% staysail with a new UV cover, and a 1.5 oz nylon APC spinnaker with an ATN sock, delivering versatile performance and reliability across a wide range of conditions.

Deck hardware and rigging

The deck presents a secure nonskid surface with rich teak in the cockpit, setting the tone for a yacht engineered to be sailed with confidence. Recent standing rigging and turnbuckles, renewed in 2025, pair with Dyneema main and genoa halyards and Dyneema running backstays, both installed in 2024, to deliver strength with minimal stretch. Custom removable mast pulpits, often called granny bars, add surefooted security at the mast. Sail handling is effortless under a Selden mast with electric in-mast furling and triple spreaders, complemented by a Furlex 400E electric headsail furler and a Furlex roller-furling staysail.

Power at the winches is comprehensive: two Antal W66 two-speed electric primary winches, two Antal W52 two-speed secondary winches, one Antal W48 two-speed electric mainsheet winch, one Andersen 46ST two-speed electric outhaul winch, and two Antal W48 two-speed halyard winches. Fine-tune control comes from the Selden compression vang, a Selden carbon spinnaker pole with the Selden Vertical Stow system, and a Selden integrated boom preventer system.

Ground tackle is equally robust, driven by a Maxwell 2200 windlass with a Maxwell chain counter and remote control at the helm pedestal. The primary anchor is an 88 lb Rocna carried on 300 feet of 1/2 inch galvanized chain, while the secondary rode combines 75 feet of 1/2 inch galvanized chain with 250 feet of 5/8 inch line. An anchor bridle and snubber lead cleanly to an anchor locker divided for separate storage.

On deck, practicality meets refinement with a fresh and salt water washdown pump and spigot, a custom stainless-steel arch with dinghy davits and integrated instruments, and a removable davit dedicated to lifting the outboard engine. After a swim, the stern platform offers a freshwater hot and cold shower, and the teak cockpit table, braced by a stainless steel strut, extends the yacht’s welcome with understated elegance.

Electronics

Seamlessly blending entertainment and navigation, the saloon features a 32" Smart TV on a motorized, retractable lift, while the master cabin benefits from a 32" Smart TV installed in 2025. Command and situational awareness come from a Raymarine Axiom Pro 12 RVX multifunction display in the cockpit paired with a Raymarine Axiom Pro 12 multifunction display at the nav station. The helm suite includes a Raymarine ST7002 Smartpilot autopilot, a Raymarine ST6002 Autopilot Head, and a robust Mamba autopilot drive, complemented by Raymarine ST60+ Wind / Speed / Depth instruments above the companionway and two Raymarine ST60+ Graphic repeaters for at‑a‑glance data. Networking and radar capability are delivered by the Raymarine SeaTalk HS network hub, Raymarine Digital Color Radar, a Raymarine 24 - 4KW scanner mounted on the mast, and a Quantum 2Q24D Doppler 18" radar, while precision beneath the surface comes via a 1 kW chirp sonar.

Communications and information services are equally comprehensive, featuring an ICOM IC‑M802 SSB radio, an ICOM IC‑M605 VHF radio with an ICOM Command‑Mic at the helm, and a Pactor PTC‑IIusb modem, supported by a 4' Galaxy AM/FM antenna. Offshore intelligence is enhanced by the Raymarine SR100 Sirius weather system, the Predictwind datahub added in 2025, Light House coastal vector charts, and a Raymarine AIS650 Class B transceiver with Silent Switch. Entertainment flows through the MS‑UD650 Unidock stereo. Power status is monitored by a Xantrex house battery monitor, a Xantrex engine battery monitor, a Victron BMV712 smart shunt battery monitor, and a Victron Color Control GCX monitor, while safety is safeguarded by a FireBoy engine room fire suppression system and a Siren security system with two hardwired cameras.

Electrical

Engineered for silent autonomy and dependable power offshore, the system centers on a Fisher Panda 8 kW generator housed in a sound-shielded enclosure, showing 798 hours as of June 2026. Solar capacity is equally robust, with a Bluesun 910-watt array comprising two 455W panels mounted on the cruising arch and installed in 2025, feeding a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/70 charge controller commissioned the same year. AC conversion and charging are handled by a Victron Energy PMP122305122 MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120-50 120V inverter/charger, while underway charging is supported by a MasterVolt 130-amp high-output alternator, an 80-amp MasterVolt engine battery charger, and a dedicated MasterVolt generator battery charger.

Energy storage is substantial, with eight 6V190Ah AGM house batteries fitted in March 2024, complemented by a 4D AGM engine start battery from 2022, a 4D AGM bow thruster/furler/windlass battery installed in 2024, and a Group 24 generator start battery added in 2025. All batteries are isolated with a built-in reverse isolation switch. Shore connectivity is straightforward via a 220V / 50A inlet with three 25 ft cables, backed by a galvanic isolator and tinned wiring throughout.

Illumination is crisp and efficient, with Imtra LED recessed overhead lighting throughout the interior, a blue, white, and red LED upgrade at the nav station, red LED courtesy and footlights, and Imtra reading lights in the saloon, master, and guest cabins.

Mechanical

The propulsion system has been thoughtfully upgraded, with the propeller shaft replaced in 2022, followed by the purchase and installation of a Gori three-blade propeller in 2024, underscoring smooth, reliable power delivery and refined efficiency.

Additional equipment

Thoughtfully outfitted for cruising and safety, the yacht carries a Winslow six-person life raft secured in a canister on the stern pushpit, a 10 hp Mercury outboard paired with an eleven-foot Achilles Hypalon dinghy, and a custom canvas tent-style cover. Practical necessities are aboard as well, including dock lines and fenders along with all USCG required safety equipment.
