Overview

1940 Gar Wood Sedan
A serendipitous discovery -
The current owner stumbled upon this exquisite vessel, untouched and in need of restoration, while it was being transported to deliver an engine. He was already the proud owner of the sole Marmon V-16 engine ever adapted for marine use, a personal endeavor by Gar Wood to evaluate the engine's potential in boating. Gar Wood had the engine fitted into his own 24'6" sedan for testing purposes. It appears that this unique project did not progress further, as no other Marmon engines have been documented in similar applications.
Recognizing the opportunity to revive the Gar Wood Sedan with the Marmon V-16, the current owner acquired the boat and initiated a meticulous restoration process.
During the restoration, it became clear that fitting the Marmon V-16 would require sacrificing the second seat, a decision that was deemed unacceptable. Instead, the team opted for a Scripps V-12, which was the next best alternative!
And thus, the transformation was complete.
This stunningly restored yacht features exquisite detailing and a period-appropriate Scripps V-12 engine, making it a remarkable find in the world of yacht sales in the current boat location. Whether you're looking to buy a yacht or simply appreciate classic craftsmanship, this Gar Wood Sedan is a true gem in the luxury yacht category.

Detailed Description

Section name

This 1940 Gar Wood Sedan is a remarkable piece of maritime history, brought back to life through a meticulous restoration process. The story of this boat is as intriguing as its craftsmanship. The current owner stumbled upon this unrestored beauty while receiving a delivery of an engine. Already in possession of the only Marmon V-16 engine ever marinized—a personal project of Gar Wood himself to explore the potential of the Marmon as a boat engine—the owner saw an opportunity to recreate the Gar Wood Sedan with this unique engine. Originally, Gar Wood had installed the Marmon V-16 in his personal 24'6" sedan to test its viability. However, the experiment did not progress further, as no other Marmon engines were used in boats, to the best of our knowledge.

Determined to bring this vision to life, the owner purchased the boat and embarked on a comprehensive restoration journey. During this process, it became apparent that fitting the Marmon V-16 would require sacrificing the second seat, a compromise deemed too significant. Instead, the decision was made to install a period-correct Scripps V-12 engine, which seamlessly integrates into the boat's design, despite it never having originally housed such an engine.

The result is a beautifully detailed restoration that captures the essence of the era while offering a unique twist with the Scripps V-12. This exquisite vessel is priced at $250,000, a mere fraction of the investment poured into its restoration. It stands as a testament to both historical preservation and the owner's dedication to reviving a classic piece of nautical engineering.
