Overview
On AUGUST 19, 1961, Mr. Alden Sypher from Washington DC finalized a contract for an exquisite MATTHEWS 42' DOUBLE CABIN MOTORYACHT. This custom-built vessel, designated as 24033, was equipped with the most powerful engines available at the time, the GM 6V53 engines delivering an impressive 185 hp. Over the next nine months, meticulous planning, design, and customization led to the creation of a stunning mahogany motor yacht named ANDIAMO. Mr. Sypher invested $623,791 in today’s currency for this remarkable yacht.
For three years, ANDIAMO navigated the waters of the Chesapeake and the Eastern seaboard with the Sypher family before being sold to her next discerning owner in 1965. The current custodian, now the seventh owner, is even more meticulous than the previous ones. ANDIAMO has proudly retained her original name since her launch. Since 1999, the current owner has showered her with care and investment, ensuring she remains in pristine condition. To enhance her longevity, she has been professionally fiberglassed, and a custom aft deck top has been added.
ANDIAMO has garnered accolades at various classic boat shows and is poised to continue impressing future owners. This stunning yacht will be showcased at the BILLY CREEL MEMORIAL GULF COAST WOODEN & CLASSIC BOAT SHOW on MAY 17 and 18. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this exquisite representation of American maritime heritage.
It has been requested that she continue her legacy as the Queen of the Fleet under her original name, ANDIAMO. If you are considering a yacht for sale in the current boat location, this is a unique opportunity to buy a yacht that embodies elegance and history. Detailed Description
Accommodations
Stepping aboard the Andiamo, one is immediately greeted by the most comfortable aft deck, leading down four carpeted steps into the main saloon. The first impression is one of abundant natural light, thanks to the large opening windows with custom blinds that line both the port and starboard sides. The forward end of the saloon is adorned with expansive windows, complete with custom coverings, creating an open and airy atmosphere that extends all the way to the VIP cabin, giving the impression of a much larger yacht.
To port and aft, a convertible settee sits beneath a large mahogany-trimmed mirror, a testament to the yacht's stability. A teak coffee table and two additional teak chairs provide a cozy space for relaxation. The Matthews Boat Company has meticulously insulated the yacht to minimize engine noise, with the mains located under the cabin sole. The teak cabin sole gleams in the natural light, while the pristine white overhead, accented with mahogany battens, is visually striking. Dark, rich mahogany trim offsets the white hidden storage lockers lining both sides of the saloon.
Proceeding forward and down three stairs, one enters the galley and dining area. To port, a U-shaped settee with built-in storage and ample shelf space accommodates the number of owners and guests onboard, a feature not always found in modern yachts. The forward deckhead above the settee is crafted from exquisite tongue-and-groove mahogany. To starboard, the well-laid-out seagoing galley boasts a full-sized refrigerator with freezer, double stainless steel sinks, and abundant storage, reflecting Scott Matthews' belief in long voyages requiring ample storage space. The teak and holly sole remains impeccable, even in this area, and there is wall space for artwork, a hallmark of a true yacht. Andiamo offers nearly 6'3" of headroom.
The yacht features a two-cabin layout, ensuring privacy for both cabins. Forward of the galley, a traditional V Berth offers storage, bookshelves, and hanging lockers. A convenient wash basin is located aft on the starboard side, and a covered marine head is situated mid-cabin between the twin berths. The original wire-enhanced deck hatch overhead provides excellent ventilation and light. This private guest suite also includes climate controls and access to the chain locker, hidden behind a lovely piece of artwork.
Crossing the main saloon and descending three carpeted steps, one finds the serene owner's en-suite. Windows with custom treatments stretch along both sides, creating a peaceful retreat. Two berths with new mattresses are separated by a four-drawer mahogany dresser, topped with a handcrafted mahogany-framed mirror. Storage is plentiful, though the pirate in the hanging locker is negotiable. The teak and holly sole complements the stunning mahogany tongue-and-groove overhead. Another large overhead hatch adds natural light, and there is ample wall space for displaying artwork.
To port, the private head features a large separate shower stall with a stainless steel shower pan and an upgraded Electrosan toilet system. The tiled vanity with a large medicine cabinet above is user-friendly, with great natural light and a gleaming teak and holly cabin sole.
Andiamo is a true head-turner in any port, with her beautiful yet simple lines attracting attention wherever she goes. She has participated in numerous boat shows, consistently placing well against stiff competition. If you're seeking a yacht that stands out, Andiamo is not your typical cookie-cutter vessel. She is a classic, capable of completing the Great Loop once more. Extensive records from the Matthews boat owners club detail her "birth," with phenomenal archives and communications between Mr. Sypher and the yard included in a ledger that will convey to her next custodian.
Andiamo is maintained in a turn-key condition, ready to go at all times. Additional photos are available, and courtesy showings can be arranged. She is easily accessible from New Orleans airport.
Hull and deck
The legacy of the Matthews Boat Company, founded by Scott Matthews in 1890 in Bascom, Ohio, is one of distinction and innovation. Originally known for crafting wooden yachts under the name Lozier, the company launched the 74-foot double-ender Onward by 1906. Scott Matthews' passion for yachting was evident when he embarked on the Great Loop with his family and guests aboard Onward, covering 9,000 miles on its original shakedown cruise. By 1907, the company had relocated to Port Clinton, Ohio, continuing to build exceptional wooden yachts. In 1965, they ventured into fiberglass yacht construction, but due to fierce competition and economic challenges, the company closed in the early 1970s.
Andiamo boasts a robustly constructed hull, beginning with a 7' x 12' solid white oak keel paired with hand-steamed white oak frames, measuring 1 1/4" x 1 7/8" and spaced on 8" centers. The frames are doubled from the main bulkhead aft to the transom for added stiffness. Her planking is made of Philippine mahogany, measuring 1 1/8" below the waterline and 1" above, secured with bronze fasteners. The bronze rudders are equally strong.
Under the care of her current custodian, Andiamo has undergone significant upgrades, including the application of C-FLEX. This material system enhances the durability of vintage wooden boats by creating a stronger hull structure. C-FLEX is applied to the prepared hull with an elastomeric adhesive, forming a strong yet flexible bond between the wood and the exterior fiberglass. Additional layers of reinforcement are then laminated to achieve the desired strength.
Andiamo's deck has also benefited from a remarkable treatment using SPANTEX, a highly durable waterproofing system. The combination of C-FLEX and SPANTEX ensures her longevity on the water for decades to come. Her hull is C-FLEXed, with SPANTEX decks over 5/8" marine plywood, and the hull sides are painted. The teak aft deck and side walkways add a touch of elegance, while the aft boarding gate with gangway and stainless deck hardware enhance functionality. A dual anchoring system is in place, and the large lazarette area houses new Monel fuel tanks. The steering flats offer easy access with a chain-driven steering system, and there are two custom-built wood-clad ice chests for convenience.
Seating for four is available around the aft deck's custom round table, and new shaft tubes and protected props ensure smooth sailing. The white helm seat provides comfort, with full engine instrumentation and electronics located at the helm. A custom-built aft deck overhead extension and custom eisinglass add to the yacht's appeal. The large mahogany steering wheel, searchlight, and large windshield with wipers offer excellent visibility. Navigation is aided by a Garmin 545, VHF, depth finder, and compass, while dual airhorns ensure safety. The mast is hinged for low bridge clearance, making Andiamo a versatile and well-equipped vessel.
Mechanical and electrical
When Andiamo was commissioned, she was equipped with the larger GM 6V53 engines, each rated at 185 horsepower with 2:1 gears. These engines underwent major servicing in the 1990s, just before the current custodian acquired the yacht. The engine serial numbers are S 6D 1359 and P 6D 1360. The engine room is heavily insulated and can be accessed through the main saloon sole, ensuring a quieter and more comfortable experience on board.
Powering the yacht's electrical needs is a 7.5 kW Onan generator, complemented by an older style Cruisair air conditioning system. The electrical system has been updated with a new Charles battery/inverter charger and newer 4 8D batteries, providing reliable power. Andiamo is equipped with dual 30 amp service, traditional stuffing boxes, and easy access electrical panels. The yacht features both 110V and 12V fresh water pumps, auto bilge pumps, and engine room blowers for efficient operation.
The propulsion system includes 23 x 24 three-bladed bronze props and 1 1/2" stainless shafts, ensuring smooth and reliable navigation. Hot water is available through a 110V 5-gallon hot water heater, as well as from the engines when running. The lazarette, accessed through the covered aft teak deck, offers a dry storage compartment with steps for easy access. This area houses the 7.5 kW Onan generator, batteries, and charger. Racor filters are conveniently mounted for easy inspection, and the chain-driven steering system is straightforward to inspect and maintain. The Charles 45 amp battery charger ensures that the electrical system remains robust and efficient.
Disclaimer
As is fitting for a substantial yacht, Andiamo is adorned with a variety of artwork, objets d'art, personal items, and tools that will not be transferred to the new custodian. Additionally, the small table in the aft stateroom is not included in the conveyance. It is requested that Andiamo retains her name, as she has been known since her launch in 1962.
