There are only two countries in South America that have access to the both of the oceans. One of them is Columbia. Named after the most famous of all explorers, the Republic of Columbia is able to offer any yacht owner immense possibilities. First of all, making the transition between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans is practically effortless. You would need to go through the Panama Canal, but, in all reality, that is a great alternative to circumnavigating half the continent.
The Mountain range of the Andes divides Columbia in half, providing a wide area of beach along the shore. Part of that area is the Pacific lowlands and is considered to be one of the most humid places on Earth. This high humidity, however, does not seem to deter travelers. Economy-wise, Columbia is not the best country in the world, but its forward momentum is positive, as it successfully copes with all problems presented. The legendary Columbian drug lords have gradually become part of this country’s history, and every year Columbian waters become even safer to travel.
It is very possible to buy a yacht in Columbia. There are a lot of private vessels that are used for fishing and voyaging, but the commercial fleet consists of no more than twenty ships. Unfortunately, local industries are poorly developed and, for the most part, yachts are imported having seen prior use. This only means that a potential yacht owner has all of the advantages of buying a very inexpensive, pre-owned boat, and venturing along the coast of South America or to the Caribbean.
Selling yachts in Columbia is not very common amongst the locals; however, as in every other developing country, there are a few of the very rich that are ready to buy your superyacht at a decent price. The most important thing is having the capability to address all of the legal issues and paperwork. The mid-priced yachts do not sell very well here, simply because a large portion of the population just cannot afford such a luxury item.
