Detailed Description
Description
M/Y THUNDER CHILD II, the XSV20 developed by Safehaven Marine, is a remarkable high-speed offshore patrol, search-and-rescue interceptor and cruiser. Launched in early 2019, this 23-meter (75-foot) vessel is engineered for exceptional performance and unwavering seakeeping in challenging conditions, uniting a patented hull concept with military-grade construction.
At the heart of the XSV20 is a patented hybrid geometry that seamlessly marries a twin-stepped asymmetrical catamaran form with a wave-piercing monohull. The result is the dynamic transverse stability and rough-weather ability of a catamaran, combined with the superior head-sea performance of a deep-V monohull. Its hydrodynamic characteristics were refined through extensive R&D, including tank testing of 12 scale model variants.
Built on a military-spec composite platform, THUNDER CHILD II employs carbon fiber, Kevlar and vinylester resin for strength, stiffness and impact resilience. The superstructure integrates 25 mm ballistic glass in the forward windows, purpose-designed to absorb significant wave impacts.
Propulsion is by four Caterpillar C8.7 654 hp engines driving four France Helices surface drives, a redundant arrangement that preserves planing speed even with one engine offline. She reaches 54 knots at maximum and cruises comfortably at 35–40 knots. A fuel capacity of 11,000 liters delivers 750–800 nautical miles at cruising speed, while a unique fuel transfer architecture, including a 2,000-liter forward ballast tank, enables precise adjustment of the longitudinal center of gravity to optimize performance as sea states change.
Performance is further elevated by an integral hydrofoil system designed by Hyuscraft. Nestled between the asymmetrical catamaran sponsons, the foil lifts the hull by 400 mm above 30 knots, reducing wetted area to markedly improve efficiency and fuel economy at higher cruising speeds, while damping pitching and overall motions for superior seakeeping.
Purposeful inside as out, THUNDER CHILD II is arranged for a crew of 5 with additional berths for passengers. A fully digital glass-helm environment features four Simrad 19-inch monitors, radar, GPS chart plotting, VHF communications, forward-looking sonar and a FLIR thermal night-vision camera, complemented by a dedicated engineer’s station for engine and CCTV monitoring.
Survivability underpins every detail: multiple watertight compartments and commercial-standard safety and engineering throughout, coupled with a self-righting capability that allows recovery from capsize in extreme conditions. These qualities are proven in service, with 9 verified records to her name, including an offshore world speed record from Ireland to Iceland in under 32 hours over approximately 1,500 km, and a new over 50-foot class Cork–Fastnet Rock–Cork world powerboat record.
