Overview
SUZY-D is an excellent example of the 49 Motor Yacht model produced by Grand Banks in their glory days when they ruled the roost in the Trawler Yacht segment of the Marine Industry, the very category they first introduced in the 1960's. The 49's were originally produced in the Classic double-cabin style and the Motor Yacht style was then introduced.
Of all the sizes in which GB produced the motor yacht configuration with it’s gunnel to gunnel raised aft deck the 49 made the most sense to this broker. Not only did it create a huge master stateroom aft it allowed for larger master heads, showers and lockers and the resulting outside deck space with its direct access from the salon & galley made this outside area useable and easy to access. Add a large fly by utilizing the mast and boom and you have the perfect area for relaxing in the shade with cocktails and Hors d'oeuvres or dining alfresco while enjoying cool island breezes.
SUZY-D offers all this and more. The current owner bought her from a yachtsman in the islands where she had been a family boat cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean and even once shipped to the Med and back for a season of exploring those waters. This owner then proceeded to remove all the old teak decks and replace them with clean easy to maintain fiberglass non-skid decks. The old Venturi windshield sections were replaced with new Plexiglas, all systems were gone through. The bottom was painted and any repairs necessary were done.
Navigation electronics were upgraded with new Garmin 7616 systems with displays at both the lower and FB helms.
SUZY-D was bought as an introduction to boating for the current owner’s family which has proved successful. She is now for sale to make way for a larger family boat.
Walk-Through
As you approach SUZY-D from the dock you are immediately impressed by her design and how substantial a yacht she is compared to other boats. It is apparent she is a quality built yacht well designed and constructed for coastal and island cruising.
Stepping aboard you turn aft and proceed down her fresh, new light gray non-skid side decks protected by the solid heavy duty Teak & Stainless Steel hand rails. Up three steps to her large aft deck (also new light gray non-skid) you can proceed up the 4-step stairway w/SS safety rails to the extra-large FB deck. With its built-in L-Settee with teak table there is still plenty of room for additional lounge chairs and seating. Moving forward we are now at the helm and FB seating area protected by an over-sized navy blue Bimini Top which matches all the canvas on SUZY-D.
The FB helm area has back to back seating for 8 and offers great visibility fore and aft. One of the new Garmin 7616 Chart Plotters with integrated radar is mounted at this helm.
Back on the aft deck we proceed through the full height cabin door and down 3 steps into the roomy salon with teak parquet sole. On the starboard side is a large U-shaped settee with a large teak Grand Banks yacht style drop leaf table. On the opposite side of the salon are 2 GB upholstered teak chairs and a mounted flat panel TV. Forward of the chairs is the partition to the galley with access to the under counter freezer above which is a pass through to the galley. There is an additional stand-alone refrigerator there also for beverages etc.
Proceeding forward to starboard adjacent to the Settee is a dry bar with bottle and glass storage and an icemaker below. Just forward of that is the lower helm with the nav electronics including the autopilot, VHF, AC and DC electrical panels and the other new 16” Garmin 7616 display.
Opposite the Lower Helm is the Galley with Princess 3 burner cooktop stove and oven, stacked refrigeration with storage above, drop-down dish, spice and paper towel dispenser storage lockers and additional under counter dish storage. Below the large double SS sink with single lever fixture are drawers and a double door storage cabinet.
Proceeding forward from the galley area and down the companionway stairs to the stateroom deck are a guest head to port, a guest cabin with twin lower berths to starboard and a large V-Berth Guest Stateroom forward with filler cushion for v-berth.. There is also a separate stall shower in this area just forward of the head. These cabins offer ample storage with plenty of drawers and hanging lockers.
Turning around in the companionway we lift the stairs to the salon and there is easy access to the stand-up engine room down 3 steps and through the utility room. The main engine room houses the twin diesel CAT 3208 375hp main engines (4300 Hrs.) and other systems. The fuel tanks are port and starboard aft and the 9.5kw Phasor main generator is in it’s own room aft between the fuel tanks sound proofed away yet visible through a Lexan door. The 8kw Westerbeke secondary gen-set in the main engine room as is the Xantrex Freedom SW3000 Inverter/Charger.
Back in the salon we proceed aft and down the steps to the very private Master Stateroom. Before entering the MSR there is a port side guest head and shower with fresh water flush toilet separate from the stateroom for day time use or to provide his and her heads for the master. The MSR has a queen size berth and banks of drawers (10 total) port and starboard. There are also 3 large hanging lockers in the MSR, two ¾ height and one full height. Walking into the Master Head there is a cultured marble counter top with molded in sink and single lever fixture. The head uses fresh water to flush and there is a large separate stall shower for this head. This is very large and quiet stateroom that actually becomes another living area away from the guests and family.
SUZY-D is standing tall and waiting for her next exploit with her new owners, ready to visit old haunts and discover new ports of call. Whether it’s down island cruising or exploring our scenic waterways during a Great Loop adventure, SUZY-D offers a great opportunity to do it in style and spacious comfort.
