Overview

WAHINI is a 1998, 71' Steel Expedition Trawler, built by the commercial boat builder Rodriguez Boat Builders of Bayou La Batre, Alabama. She is a well constructed, well outfitted, cruising vessel that has three living zones to make living aboard easy and a pleasure, and equipped with standard, "off the shelf" parts.  All of the teak and varnish are found throughout her interior, with no brightwork to bother with on her exterior.  There are four staterooms, each with ensuite heads.  The wheelhouse is a pleasure to be in, and for those long passages there is a day bed and head on this flybridge deck. Aft of the wheel house is a large sundeck, with an awning that adds to her features. The engine room is full stand up height, with full walk around engine installations, allowing excellent access to the three generators and all other related equipment that services the vessel. This is a serious, low maintenance operating vessel that will ensure safe passage for your cruising adventures.

Features, exterior

  • Forget the waxing, varnishing, and polishing on the exterior of WAHINI !!  She is a substantial piece of equipment, of commercial construction, welded steel, and the painted on her exterior with DuPont Imron Industrial paint. Railings and hand rails are solid and surround all decks, making movements safe and easy, even while working in heavy seas.  Access to the upper deck/wheelhouse is from a stairway forward of the galley on the main deck, or via a stairway from the port, aft side deck that leads to the aft upper deck. The exterior features are many and include the following:
  • There are four control stations; one in the wheelhouse, two wing stations that are forward on the upper deck, and one station on the starboard side on the lower aft deck; all with bow thruster controls. In the engine room you will find emergency manual engine controls.
  • The foredeck has a 6000# Stahl crane, and the upper FB deck has a full hydraulic Quick LIft 1600# davit
  • The ground tackle starts with a 400# Navy Anchor and a 120# Bruce anchor, both on 150' of 3/4" chain, and managed by two Maxwell Nielson electric windlasses.
  • The side decks are wide, and the aft cockpit is huge, with a complete Scuba setup, and storage for tanks and regulators. There is a transom door that opens to very large S/S swim platform.
  • On the upper aft deck is roomy and is covered part way with an awning, so that you can lounge in the shade or just entertain here.  There are several large deck boxes here for storage, along with a dining table and chairs for that outdoor dining.
  • Forward on the aft deck, adjacent to the engine room door, is a large scuba tank storage cabinet.
  • There is a ladder from this aft upper deck that leads to the roof of the wheelhouse
  • Forward on the hull is the Wesmar hydraulic operated bow thruster.
  • Halfway aft on the hull are the fixed stabilizers or rolling chocks that work full time without an engine or generator running.
  • Props are 4 bladed, 28" X 28", on 2 1/2" shafts.  A set of spare props is onboard.
  • Last we have a fixed keel under this vessel with all of its benefits.

Wheelhouse

Navigation from this wheelhouse is comfortable and a delight in any weather. The main helm is forward and gives you a full 360 degree view from this station.  All of your navigation equipment is within easy reach, so plotting and achieving a safe voyage will be a treat.  This helm is full width of the wheel house, with doors, both port and starboard for accessing the side decks and the wing helm stations, or going forward behind the Portuguese bridge for some fresh air.
There is a crew watch bench aft of the helm station, and to port, with a large twin berth aft of the bench seat for the extra watch on those overnight passages.  Aft to starboard is a day head, so no one has to leave the bridge if so desired.  Aft of the wheelhouse a rear door opens to large alfresco dining area with seating for eight that will certainly be used once anchored or docked.

A wet bar located to the starboard side of the dining area makes for easy beverage service.  The wet bar has a S/S sink and utilizes a below the counter Haier wine cooler and a U-Line refrigerator. Five large watertight windows surround the dining salon bringing in plenty of natural light to accent any of you meals.

Galley

The galley is truly chef friendly, pleasant, and well equipped.  The new Mediterranean Blue Corian counter tops, along with the snow white double bowl Corian sink with garbage disposal, will not require you to draw straws to see who works in the galley.  There is a Kitchen Aid 4 burner stainless steel propane range top, with a Kenmore stainless steel range hood, 3 stainless steel ovens (conventional, convection, & microwave), a pull out stainless steel warming drawer, and a GE stainless steel, double door refrigerator/freezer with cubed ice and chilled water from the freezer door dispenser. Salon

Forward of the galley and the stairway to the flybridge you will find a cozy salon/entertainment area. When you have enough of everything and just need to snuggle down on a nice, cool, comfy couch to read a book or to watch your favorite movie, or get updated with the latest news & weather on the satellite TV, in the surround sound theater atmosphere, this is the place. Located here is an L-shaped sofa, two occasional chairs, and a Hi-Lo table. There is one wall of book shelves and roll out drawers for storage of your favorite books and DVDs, with the large Sony 36" flat screen TV mounted in the middle. • The boat is presently in drydock while some routine maintenance is being done to her, along with new anti-fouling paint on her bottom, and prepare for sea trials and surveys.
