Description

Raised salon blue water cruiser with unparalleled versatility and performance

The powerful Southerly 480 (Discovery 48 S) features the legendary Southerly Variable Draft Swing Keel allowing for deep draft performance (10' 3" down) and extreme shoal draft (3' 3'). The yacht has a solant rig (twin headstays), self-tacking jib, optional in-mast furling mainsail, twin wheels, twin rudders, raised salon and a skeg protected propeller.

Interior configuration options include 2 or 3 staterooms and high-quality finishes. Discovery Yachts are built to order by Discovery Shipyard in Marchwood, UK.

The Discovery S (variable draft) range includes the new Southerly 42 (aft cockpit, twin wheels, raised salon), Southerly 435 (center cockpit, single wheel, lower salon), Discovery 48S and Discovery 54S. The 48 and 54 are also available with a fixed keel..

Overview

Hull, Deck and Swing Keel

Hull: Heavy duty GRP moulding, hand laid up to Discovery's precise laminating system incorporating multi-axial and unidirectional reinforcements. Thickness increases progressively towards the keel area. The keel box is an integral part of the hull layup and sandwich construction stiffening runs the entire length of the hull topsides. All main bulkheads are bonded into the hull at main lay-up stage. Substantial skeg fitted on centerline to protect the propeller. The skeg can accommodate an optional stern thruster.

Swing Keel: The variable draft keel is a solid cast iron and lead aerofoil fin, pivoted in a grounding plate and raised by a hydraulic hoist which enables the keel to be set at intermediate points or fully retracted into the hull, at the touch of a button. The fixed ballast is an iron casting which acts as a grounding plate and as transverse and longitudinal stiffening member for the assembly. The fixed ballast casting is fitted into a recess in the hull and secured with multiple stainless steel bolts. All hydraulics are easily accessible for maintenance.

Deck: Hand laid up GRP sandwich type construction using foam core stiffening, with plywood in high stress areas where fittings are positioned. Heavily stressed areas are also reinforced with unidirectional glass. The deck is bonded to the full through the entire length and to all main bulkheads resulting in a strong and integrated unit. Teak laid to side decks and cockpit.
